Autopsy Round 1, 2024: Positives and Negatives vs Port Adelaide

Might as well back Chess and now and take the good with the bad. Recently he’s started a lot better than his early days. Gaff needs to go back to WAFL and be that “break in case of emergency” player when the injuries start piling on.

Darling and TB were quite poor but TB ended up being ok after a disgraceful start. Jack stunk but also the delivery and ball movement hurt him like it did to Allen.

Yeo and TK just got a pass mark but can’t have have our two best mids getting 20 or less touches every weekend

Duggan also had a what if game. Did some nice things but his shitty kicking hurt us a lot more
Darling for example was once a very hard working defensive 50 player when he didn't have the ball. He was jogging today. TB will never be great. Allen failed as a leader.

I really didn't like the sight of Simpson running out on the ground 2 seconds after the game finished to do some back slapping and yukking it up with Rioli with a massive grin and smile on his face. This guy's head just is not where it needs to be.

Rioli stabbed the club in the back and walked out on us after all the bending over backwards we did for him. On top of that we just lost another game by 9 goals and it could have been another 100 point belting if Port had been even moderately efficient. I am not saying he should never speak to Rioli again or should hurl abuse at him. No need to carry hate in your heart or be immature. But he should be at least as disappointed in the performance as the average supporter is and should not be smiling and laughing about anything with anyone 2 seconds after the siren goes on a performance like that. And if he isn't as disappointed as the average supporter he should have enough common sense not to show it on camera. He should have 100 other things closer to the top of his mind regarding doing his actual job and driving improvement at the club he is being paid $1 million a year to coach as opposed to the number 1 priority being to run out there and backslap with Rioli.
We'll just add it to lengthy list of things you don't like.

That Chesser goal at the end is exactly what we would have been hoping for predraft. Use his speed to get a handball receive and use his skills to finish.

At the end of the match, and perhaps the pressure not as high- but I hope he takes a bit of confidence from that half.

You’d think he starts next week. Gaff will likely be learning some new teammate names at the Beagles.

So let’s get this straight. Your negative of the game was the coach slapping a former player of his on the back after the game had finished and it took you a 188 word paragraph to explain that to us.

Should have been a lot worse, giving up so many shots at goal and a heap of them very easy.

The break down looks structural rather than personnel, although we also don't have the best players.
The ease at which port moved the ball from back half is the biggest concern.

Gaff and Witherden are not good enough, shouldn't be getting games ahead of younger players.
Ginbey a huge concern, think his best position is half back, feels like it will be years for him to learn midfield and even then he might not make it.

Darling 2.0, built like Tarzan, plays like Jane.

Hough, Brockman, Long had average games but worth persisting with.

Biggest positive: NO INJURIES!

Positives.

Reid was good. Showed exactly why he is rated so highly and I think will only be better for the run. You can see he wants to move the ball quickly, made a couple of mistakes but I get the feeling in time he will be the sort of guy that carries the team on his back and dares them to follow. Loved his celebration at the goal waterman kicked he enjoyed being amongst it.

Gov was good, as was Kelly, I thought even if the stats said otherwise.

Petch just loves kicking goals against the power. Played well.

Quite liked what I saw from Edwards in the second half. He is starting to build, hopefully gets a run at it as he is very balanced like his dad.

Forward hanballing, good. Run from half back, good. More please.

Negatives.

Some of the ball use from our senior blokes is just terrible. Witherden could be a completely different footballer if he decided to not casually hit a 1% kick every time he got the ball. Can’t expect Darling or Allen to compete with delivery like we gave them.

Conceding after basically every behind it felt was quite frustrating. We gave them far too much space to just hit targets at will. Hopefully we analyse it and train all week against it because as sure as hell the giants are 10x better than port are at moving the ball.

Expected a 50 point loss, and given the game, it felt about right. What could have happened had Allen score his set shot? Probably not much different, but boy that’s the kick as captain he has to hit.

Agree with nearly everything except Ginbey. How many CBAs did he even attend today? Not sure we can write him off as a mid just yet

Think darling is done aswell.
Poor guy ( and Allen) were double teamed all game and the supply was atrocious.

Darling and allen had it kicked over their head on the lead at least 4 times .

I don't mind darling just being a body to take pressure away from Allen and whoever the 3rd tall is . Atm waterman

He still kicked a goal

Problem is if our resting ruck is a back then guys like allir will just zone off waterman and double team .

Gaff to the WAFL.
Chesser into the 23.

We lost two Qs by less than a goal and one by 18pts. So we were reasonable for a fair bit of the game. (Admittedly different story if Port kicked straight.)

Brockman and Jamo showed glimpses. Oh and #9 looked okay.

I think the biggest positive is the patches in which we were competitive lasted longer than last year.

Sure, ports finishing made the final score better, but also a whole lot of those shots came from our errors (poor kicking out of D50, a few fumbles down back). Probably a fair margin at the end.

Negatives, the team lost concentration and structure at stages. Inability to stop fast transition. Delivery to forwards.

Negatives are relatively fixable which is great. Won’t happen overnight but hopefully the effort remains up for the whole season.

+Good stuff from the kids. I'd much rather be us than Port, as we at least have some hope of joy in the future.
+Petch goes bang!

- The awful crowd. Multiple people on the hill yelled at me to sit down, despite my best efforts to explain it's a standing section, not a lay on the grass and whinge section. Disgraceful stuff. I can only assume a) Port's working-class branding is a lie and their fans are all pissy Karens or b) they're all rorting disability payouts and can't be caught on camera standing at the footy. Either way, Crows crowds are much cooler. Enjoy bombing out in another prelim, you poor-man's-Freo dipshits!

Acknowledges issues particularly with the kick outs and with the it just going end to end from our f50.
Was asked about Gaff and said he had a trash half so was subbed, wasn't answering on match committee for next week re: gaff. but was pleased with Chessers impact.

Pretty similar to what we have been talking about in here regarding the issues but was overall optimistic.

Positives:

  • Yeo looked fit and was pretty sharp
  • Reid looked comfortable at the level
  • Jamieson was actually decent tbh - deserved a look as a KPD
  • Petch was good infront of the sticks
  • Williams competed hard
  • Chesser’s goal

Negatives:

  • Barrass…he’s been toweled up by big forwards the last two years. Is his back shot beyond repair? He looks like he can barely move
  • Allen. I love Oscar, but that was as poor a game as I’ve seen from him lately.
  • Gaff…yeah…sad to say but the bloke is cooked.
  • Transition defense still nowhere to be found. It’s quite embarassing how easy it is for teams to go from one end of the ground to the other.

Did he use the word trash?

In my footy dictionary thats a word used on a player getting dropped.

For the life of me Simpson seriously just doesn't seem to care about our performances, the sight of him smiling and laughing after the game is puke worthy.
I miss the scowls of Malthouse and Worsfold after losses.
Most of the issue is with our senior players poor efforts and skill errors and Simpsons same old game plan.

Nothing will change under Simpson.

Loving the kids like Reid and Chesser and Jamieson.

Lots to like, Agree with a lot on the older players being rubbish.
Though our rebuild is going OK especially through the middle.

When we look at the inside of the contest we actually matched up resonably OK.
Got smashed in the Hit Outs but that was expected with Bailey being the main ruck.
But we won it out of the middle and were solid around the ground at stoppage.

On the outside, spread and when we were under pressure was a totally different story though.

Really have to sort out our outside game and that should help our turn overs when we have players in more space.

It might be a rough year but I'm very excited to see our new No.9 killing it out there.

For all the 'scowls' Worsfold gave, he's coached as many flags as Simmo.
