Delisted Rhys Mathieson (2015-2023)

We are crying out for one of our younger midfield options to step up and contribute at a high level on a consistent basis and I really believe Mathieson will be that guy in season 2018. He has always been a competitive beast at the contest but has struggled to maintain the intensity over four quarters due to a lack of strength and endurance, however, it appears he has improved in these areas over the off season and really impressed all the coaches in the process. He'll be a big asset at the coal face if he can start to get to more contests on a regular basis.
Yep, agree. He's the one for me too. Over the last two years he has shown that attitude in games but without the physical capabilities yet. However he's had a great off-season which has lead into the pre-season. It would be great to see him step up and fill that gap by Rocky's departure. He won't be flashy but I reckon he'll be invaluable.

He already possesses the ability to get under the skin of his opponent, as well as the opposition fan base. He thrives on the energy being directed at him, which is such a refreshing thing to see compared to the years of bruise-free footy we've seen from most of the youth in seasons gone by.

I remember seeing a vid where he was either saying, or was hinting at the fact that after Rocky left Fagan said that there's now a need for a new inside mid, and it really looks like he's busting his left nut to get that role nailed down.

The big thing I really want to see improvement in this season is his foot disposal - while slap on the boot is good at times, I recall a lot of his kicks were very floaty and not as direct as they could be. Just a small wish, but it'll increase his potency significantly in the midfield.

#36 - Rhys Mathieson
The 2018 pre-season saw Rhys Mathieson return to training in his best form yet. Mathieson opted to not return home to Victoria during the off-season, remaining in Queensland to train alongside one of the Lions' best runners, Nick Robertson.

While Mathieson was ineligible for selection in Round 1 due to a minor hamstring complaint, he impressed during his return in Round 2 against Melbourne at the Gabba. A quieter game in the Round 4 loss to Richmond resulted in Mathieson being dropped to NEAFL as the coaches made a number of changes to the side.

The young midfielder made a significant impact for the Lions' NEAFL side, playing seven consecutive matches and collecting an average of 24 disposals per match. Mathieson returned to Senior football after the Round 13 bye and played the remaining ten games for 2018. The 21-year-old produced his most exciting match of the year in Round 20 at the Gabba, kicking two goals and collecting 15 disposals.

Coaches Comment - Dale Tapping, Midfield Coach

"Good second half of the season as an inside mid. Works hard around the contest and is committed to developing his game."

Senior matches: 13, NEAFL matches: 7

Certainly will give it his best shot (excuse the pun). But hard to get a read on his potential given the quality of the others he will now be competing with.

Having just turned 22 - rapid improvement will be expected over the next few seasons :thumbsu:

Any midfielder who can get 32 disposals and 9 clearances against a high class midfield like GWS has got it in him :footy:

Needs rapid improvement after having improved little over his first 3 seasons. His ball use has improved from a very low starting point but he’s steady or gone backwards slightly in most of the main stats.

Can’t see him lasting more than a couple more years on an AFL list.

I can't like this post, but have to agree. Just a tad "agricultural" in his skills for me.

Yep...IMO, what Captain Jack Dyer would call a good ordinary footballer. (A natural talent with good endurance)..Has shown he has good hands, particularly clean with his disposal. I noticed last season, that he does have an uncanny ability to pick the right moment to win the pill..(bit Selwood like)... I agree the midfield buy-in will make it difficult for him...but it's not out of the question as he's shown he's a competitive beast and has leadership skills...The downside is he does occasionally rush his kicking disposal when under pressure..Can also play forward and has been outstanding with his defensive pressure..but we've also been upgrading in that area as well... needs to add some extra eye-catching strings to his bow..

Lions bursting with confidence after positive pre-season (Michael Whiting)
After Saturday's match, Fagan said the win should give his Lions belief. That was backed up by hard-as-nails midfielder Rhys Mathieson. "It's nice to get two JLT wins. I know it's just JLT but it builds belief," Mathieson told AFL.com.au.

"It's not saying we're going to win round one and round two but we've got that belief that we can compete. "Melbourne's a top footy club, ranked No.1 in a lot of stats, so for us to compete against them on the weekend the way we did, I feel our belief has gone through the roof."

It's also a word that has had to define Mathieson this pre-season. Following the off-season acquisitions of Lachie Neale and Jarryd Lyons – although offset by the departure of Dayne Beams – the fight for spots in the midfield have escalated. He's just turned 22 and yet to play more than 13 games in any of his three seasons.

However, after 28 disposals against Hawthorn and 23 and a goal against Melbourne, Mathieson has demanded a round one spot. "I stayed in Brisbane for my off-season and ran with a big group," he said. "I'm just trying to build that tank, it's not perfect but I can compete with what I've got. "I certainly feel better. I think it's noticeable that I'm lasting longer and am not as tired.

"At this moment my belief is pretty strong. "I feel like I've had two good JLT games, not outstanding, but pretty good. I'm very confident I can play at the level and I want to be in there every week."

He said Neale, and particularly contested ball-winning expert Lyons, had been a big help since coming to the club. "As long as we're improving, the belief is there now, the sky's the limit at the moment," he said.

The history behind season openers
Among the Lions players in contention for their first Round 1 opening against the Eagles on Saturday night are Zac Bailey, Rhys Mathieson, Oscar McInerney, Archie Smith and Cedric Cox.

Mathieson’s likely first inclusion for Saturday night will knock him off the top of the list of Lions players who have played most games without a Round 1 appearance.

Mathieson (37) leads this list from Brett Voss (35), James Hawksley (32), Peter Worsfold (31) Albert Proud (29), Marcus Picken (25), Ray Windsor (23), Lachlan Sim (21) and Steve McLuckie (20).

Two of the Brisbane Lions emerging stars, ruckman Archie Smith and midfielder Rhys Mathieson, have re-committed to the Club until the end of 2021.

Both said the Lions was home and they looked forward to continuing their career at the Gabba.
