Jim Maxwell has been wheeled out for the ODI today on the ABC. He made a perfect start by having the wrong batsman facing the first ball.

ABC only seemed to have the two summarisers in Jaques and Stuart Clark. Wonder if someone pulled out last-minute or if it's cost-cutting. They did have someone at all three Shield games though.

Sen had Flem and Darren Berry as their summarisers on Friday and it seemed like Flem was on air for about 30 straight overs at one point.

People in the industry still think Jim is good at commentating. He must be a good beer.

To be fair to Jim, he did commentate that moment quite well imho.

Doesn't excuse the many other issues with his commentary that we have.

Any good commentator would be the first to say that such moments make it very easy. It's the consistent mistakes and bizarre tangents that clearly mark his decline.

I remember when Blofeld was past his best and during the Ashes he mixed Chris Rogers up with the late Phil Hughes and it was the most awkward of brief pauses before he corrected himself but it was indicative that he was no longer up to ball-by-ball commentary.

Yes, the test comes in the difficult moments, that's when a really good commentator shows their worth. Also, they pre-script the big moments (obviously with a few alternatives depending on the result) with all the relevant stats to hand and superlatives at the ready.

Is it beyond the realms of possibility that Whateley will return to the ABC? Comes down to dollars and cents I guess but SEN could easily replace him with someone on less than half his coin who would rate just as well, if not better albeit without the same profile.

I'd love to know how potential commentators are trained up in the craft.
No not in a million years and it’s because of $$$

Jim Maxwell was horrible yesterday.

Two top order Windies batsmen were bowled, and it took poor old Jim a few seconds to realise what was going on….then he called it in a nonchalant “Oh he’s knocked him over…well there you go…” kind of way.
100% “Cooked” 2023/24 has been the summer of Jim but for FFS just end it now

AI Maxwell.
It will probably be Corbin Middlemas or Alison Mitchell.

Keeping Maxwell on for another summer would just trash the ABC cricket reputation further and would drive listeners away.

Mitchell would be better than Middlemas. Although she might not be available to be the lead caller due to potentially having media commitments elsewhere, as in 2023/24.

Bit of a shame the ABC can't make a 'Godfather' like offer to Tim Lane or Gerard Whately to take over the ABC's cricket coverage as lead commentator once Jim Maxwell retires.

It’s run on the smell of an oily rag - they’ve got 3/5 of **** all of a budget which is why they have who they have and why they’ve lost anyone any good to commercial networks - not going to happen

It all went to hell after the ABC didn't do a cricket book for the 2013 Ashes for the first time in a bee's dick off eighty years.

Please not Tim Lane….
Indeed. Lane is also well past it and has become an increasingly insufferable twat over the last 25-odd years.

Whateley is also annoying and I would prefer that he stay away. He is too melodramatic, too fond of the sound of his own voice and prone to pontificate. Enough already about Winx, please.

As others have observed, the cult of personality has become a problem again with the ABC cricket coverage. Getting a high-profile name to lead the commentary and be the personification of ABC cricket is not the way to go. It's better to get a capable lead and a sound team of support callers and analysts. Please keep Ric Finlay on as the stats wizard.

Seven more seasons for the ABC, SEN and Triple M, taking them out to 2030/31.

Cricket Australia have announced a new agreement with Sports Entertainment Network (SEN), ABC and SCA’s Triple M Network, for the next seven seasons through to 2030/31.

Under the agreement, SCA’s Triple M and LiSTNR will will retain exclusive FM metro broadcast rights, together with digital audio and metro DAB+ to broadcast all the Australian men’s internationals games played in Australia, including Tests, One Day Internationals and T20 internationals, and this summer will, for the first time, add the three Australian women’s T20 international games against England to its coverage. Additional cricket content will also be available via LiSTNR podcasts and on Triple M’s social media.

SCA CEO, John Kelly, said:

“We are absolutely delighted to extend and expand our partnership with Cricket Australia for the next seven seasons. This year, for the first time, Triple M adds women’s international cricket to its broadcast coverage as the Australian women’s team seeks to retain its number one world ranking.

The summer of cricket is a well-established Aussie tradition and Triple M and LiSTNR will bring listeners the best cricket coverage, with the network’s trademark irreverent banter, to entertain, inform and inspire audiences over summer.”

The ABC, which will be in its 99th year broadcasting cricket in the 7th year of the agreement, will now cover the BBL and WBBL as well as women’s and men’s internationals. SEN will also now include WBBL coverage.

Cricket Australia will continue to carry the audio feeds of SEN, SCA and the ABC on the CA Live app and cricket.com.au

Upcoming matches include the Australian men’s team playing five tests against India this summer and five tests against England in The Ashes in the summer of 2025, plus the world-leading Australian women’s team competing in The Ashes against England this summer.

The first match to be broadcast on Triple M and LiSTNR will be on 4 November when the Australian men’s team takes on Pakistan in a One Day International at the MCG.

Good to see the BBL on the ABC.

I am a bit surprised SEN will cover the WBBL but seems a good result all round.
Same re ABC. Annoyed the crap out of me that SEN had the radio rights for the BBL but wouldn't even broadcast Scorchers games on their SEN WA station.
