Yes, a few big gets for the Pirates

What's the latest on the move to new facility? Hear there's been some trouble brewing
Yes there has been a bit of unrest around the lease at the new venue.

Because of the 15 years we have been fighting to get a facility was done in Park Ridge Juniors entity as we didn’t have seniors when we started lobbying. The council with support of AFLQ have seen it in their wisdom to give the lease to juniors.

Which after being a committee for 9 months decided to change juniors name to Greenbank Giants on there way out of school.

Bit to still play out as seniors in lot better financial position and are needed there for ground usage.

Hopefully sanity prevails and each entity gets a lease which would solve the problem.

Not sure where Jimboomba sitting at present but it’s certainly great to get a few boys back that want to play Saturday Footy again from our neighbours.

I'm sure it will be sorted and pirates will play out of the new facility.
Never back blocker into a corner and expect he will go quietly.
I've known him for too long to think about anything less.

Pirates Junior committee got the keys to new joint, changed named to Greenbank Giants and decided the Pirates short history was irrelevant.

No reason not to believe that, but very ordinary from AFLQ if they have supported that. Why would they do that?

Ridiculous situation.

Changing the name is stupid, splitting the club is stupid, trying to forget 15 years of hard slog, more stupid.

Let's hope sanity prevails, but will never answer a call or assist "Greenbank Giants" in any way if it doesn't.

Absolutely agree here Thommo, Firmly in Andy's corner on this one and will do what we can to assist the Pirates in anyway.

Maybe a joint letter from supporting clubs is needed ?

Greenbank giants is a bit boring. Why didn’t they go with goanna’s or grasshoppers! I agree though the pirates have been done dirty by the council/aflq! Hopefully there is a resolution soon.

They (AFLQ)supported Juniors getting Lease and knew about name change as well. Local Councillor involved as her area is Greenbank so she was pushing for name change as well.

Problem is we now have a divided club as we have half the juniors not wanting to go under that name as they have parents playing or played at Pirates.

All we can do is keep concentrating on what we can control with seniors and push forward for 2024 at school until we get some one to listen to how ridiculous this debacle really is.

Plenty of clubs run separate books from their junior club without the need to change the name. Sounds like madness. Wests / Sherwood all over again or was that a different scenario?

Nothing like us.

Sherwood has been Sherwood since 1956 in juniors.

They started seniors in 1966.

However in 1974, moved to current location and shared a border with Western Districts.

Sherwood were SQAFA and Wests were QAFL. Issue was that in the 70s, Sherwood were the biggest junior footy club in Australia and a dominant junior powerhouse, so even with the best kids all jumping the fence to play QAFL, they won 8 SQAFA flags in a row and also won the pre-season QAFL comp a few times, they got elevated in 1983.

However part of the rules for elevation was that Sherwood weren't allowed to play home games at home, because we shared a boundary with Wests, so became QAFL nomads.

Then after years of fighting, the two clubs merged in the Seniors in 1991 (Wests Juniors in taringa and Sherwood jnrs remained seperate). The Senior merger lasted until 1997, they won the QAFL flag in 96 and then the merger failed the following year and Western Districts have ceased to exist ever since.

Sherwood re-entered Seniors in 1999, but were forced by AFLQ to play as Western Magpies as a condition of a senior licence. We applied in 2015 to go back to being called Sherwood and were denied, then when Dean Warren replaced Mick Conlan I asked him if we could change back and he immediately said yes and couldn't understand why we had been denied previously, so in 2019 we returned to being Sherwood and have no connection to Wests at all, who no longer exist at Senior level. (We do have many kids at the club who had fathers that played at Wests though)

Apologies for detour off topic, but it's a common misconception

Just out of curiosity is there any Junior Club that holds a lease over the Senior Club anywhere in our competitions?

Probably ones that were juniors first before they started seniors.

thinking springfield, coomera, ormeau, rattlers, those types of places maybe?

It shouldn't matter who holds the lease. Both junior and senior clubs should be on the same path if long term success is the goal.
It's when one doesn't acknowledge the role of either side plays in the development of players and the club is when it goes wrong.
Juniors create future senior players and volunteers. Seniors give loyal junior players a place to stay for many years.
You all use the same oval clubhouse and facilities.
When a kid comes though the system and gets to wear a senior jumper for the first time he wants to wear what he knows. Not a completely different name or kit.
It's called a club for a reason.

I totally hamate and that was the plan. However this group are off on their own tangent at present and not really giving a flying about seniors.

AFLQ has convinced them to cut ties with us and go alone and try and establish their own seniors in 3-4 years.

We all know how hard and laughable that idea is especially out our neck of woods.

I’m hearing Jimboomba definitely still trying for Saturday Footy but not sure if they can’t succeed do they automatically step back into Friday Night space?

Good history lesson Thommo - thanks. Yes it is one of those absolute ironies that a club in Qld could be the largest junior football club in the land back in the 70s

Initially they wanted us to go there together but that retrict seems to have changed.

The local councillor has relationship with one of the junior committee people and she is pulling strings and AFLQ just towing the line.

Funny how much concern, conversation and investment is put into a junior group yet a senior club paying $22K a year gets crickets.

So was just thinking about some of these Friday night teams that could be in a div 2 Sat comp. But either due to location (strong clubs in the same area) or other reasons are stuck in Friday night. No.1 - Ferny Grove. I remember many years ago they had a div 1 u12 side around 2011 I think. I know they had a div 2 u16 side in later years. I don’t know anything about them now in juniors. However they are on the north west side of a very crowded strong Saturday area. Aspley, Kedron, Grange and Sandgate. With 2 of those teams in div 2 north.

2- More of a cluster of teams in the same area. Ipswich Eagles, Ipswich Cats, Springfield, Fernvale (Brisbane Valley Rattlers) and Collingwood park. Now Eagles only just dropped into div 4 last year and finished second. But now they face the issue of no longer being the club in the area the other Ipswich clubs better players go to to play Sat. The Cats have been below average for a few years now and Collingwood park is now the strongest of the lot being in div 3. I would assume Fernvale being such a way away from everyone that Saturday probably will never happen. Although due to such sheer numbers in Ipswich and now the lions training out there, one of those teams would surely make the trip back to Saturday. Perhaps Collingwood park? Greater Springfield has great new facilities and a growing population so maybe they could find their way up one day.

3. Pac Pines- These guys are more about being a new club and building a strong junior base. I would think it would be obvious for them to make the jump to div 2 south in the next 2-3 years. Junior base leading up to their 17s seems to be alright. Great field and new facilities and back to back premierships. Although went to watch them play coops last year and they need to get rid of those school picnic tables as coaches boxes!

But of course if these clubs aim to stay Friday nights then good for them. Also this post wasn’t meant to have a go at any clubs. Just thinking out loud.

Hopefully moorooka and the eagles go back to Saturday’s. Both teams have a long history playing Saturday’s.
