QAFL 2025 - Tradition V Trivia

The thread that (almost) nobody wanted!
This year, subject to work and family priorities, I will aim to share some historical info for each round, similar to what appeared in 2024.
I appreciate that these posts are not of interest to everyone, so here they are in a separate thread for 2025. If you want to read them, I hope you enjoy what you see. Alternatively, if this is not your scene at all, please feel free to ignore it.
This can be as serious or as superficial as you wish. Is it self-indulgent? Is it a waste of time? Is it relevant? All of those answers are up to you.
But even if it is simply a diversion from day-to-day matters, that’s not such a bad thing, is it?

First up, I’m seeking opinions please.
How should Coorparoo history be viewed in 2025?
In geographical terms, Coorparoo is the same club as the Roos who played 1,005 QAFL games* leading up to 1993. Whilst on the other hand, the Kings represent a club that evolved from the Treasury club (BAFL), making their QAFL debut this weekend.
I understand both arguments – and if I had to take a side, I would favour a link to the Roos, simply because it provides me with bigger numbers to work with during the season.
Does anyone have an opinion on this? Any passionate perspectives?

A short one for the wet weekend to get started (and I can build from that):

Round 1

Labrador V Broadbeach (confirmed postponed)

Played 63: Labrador 23 – Broadbeach 40 (1997-2024)
Last time they met: Round 8, 2024 – Labrador won by 21 points. (As a result of that game, the aggregated QAFL score between the two clubs has now passed 10,000 points.)
Broadbeach has won 12 of the past 14 games. Across all their games, 11 have been decided by 2 goals or less.
It would be great to uncover the record for their GCAFL clashes – we are talking about an era that covers 1971 to 1996. That’s a significant period of time. And similarly, it is a project that will take a considerable amount of time to complete.

Maroochydore V Aspley
Played 5: Maroochydore 1 – Aspley 4 (2022-2024)
Last time they met: Round 13, 2024 – Maroochydore won by 13 points.
The two clubs first met in the BAFL from 1993 to 1997 – and then, depending on your perspective, in the AFLQ Division 2 from 2005 to 2008.
Within the QAFL, Aspley won the first four encounters.

Coorparoo V Palm Beach Currumbin
Played 0: Coorparoo 0 – Palm Beach Currumbin 0 (0000-0000)
Last time they met: They haven’t (ever).
If anyone has any information to the contrary, please feel free to share it with me. However, I would contend that no iteration of Coorparoo has ever played Palm Beach for Senior Premiership Points before.
And further to my earlier post: is this Game 1006 for Coorparoo? Or Game 1 for the Kings? (It is Game 259 for Palm Beach.)
Either way, history will commence with this clash.

Morningside V Redland Victoria Point (confirmed postponed)
Played 39 Morningside 28 - Redland 11 (20000-2013, 2021-2024)
Last time they met: Grand Final, 2024 – The Panthers won by 5 points.
Between these two clubs, there have been more games decided by margins greater than 100 points (6), than there have been by margins 12 points or less (5). The Average Winning Margin (either way) is almost 10 goals (59.5 points).
I doubt any of that is going to happen this week, especially in wet weather.

Sherwood V Mt Gravatt
Played 32: Sherwood 11 – Mt Gravatt 21 (2001-2004, 2009-2010, 2014-2024)
Last time they met: Round 15, 2024 – Sherwood won by a record 196 points.
Fortunes have fluctuated for both clubs. What the QAFL records do not reveal is the great rivalry that played out in the SQAFA competitions. This is arguably the quintessential SQAFA Clash. In both clubs’ origins, they had taken the field against each other from 1967 to 1982.
Sherwood require 11 goals to reach their 400th goal against Mt Gravatt in the QAFL comps.

Wilston Grange V Noosa
Played 12: Wilston Grange 10 – Noosa 2 (2011-2013, 2021-2024)
Last time they met: Round 19, 2024 – The Gorillas won by 140 points.
Another clash with pre-QAFL history. These two clubs have also competed across 1998 to 2000 and 2002 to 2010 (BAFL, AFLSQ, & AFLQ Div 2).
Wilston Grange has won the last 4 encounters.
Across their QAFL history, 4 games have been decided by 2 goals or less (Wilston Grange has won each of those 4 games).

None of these 6 clashes this weekend have ever recorded a Draw against each other. Of the 85 Draws in QAFL history. 10 of them have occurred in Round 1 (the most recent being Aspley and Broadbeach in 2023) – so that is statistically prominent.

As usual, if anyone disagrees with any details, or has more information to share, please let me know – I am definitely happy to correct any records I have saved.

Enjoy. :thumbsu:

Round 1 Results

The Matter that’s Stuff

Half a round is better than nothing. Here are the QAFL Scorigami references for the three games of Round 1, plus other potentially useless scraps of local trivia:

Maroochydore 13-9-87 d Aspley 6-10-46
Played 6: Maroochydore 2 - Aspley 4 (2022-2025)
Overall 25: Maroochydore 14 – Aspley 11 (1993-1997, 2005-2008, 2022-2025)
Maroochydore has won their past two games against Aspley.
This score has occurred once previously:
1966 PF: Mayne 12-15-87 d Wilston Grange 4-22-46
(That’s an interesting result in itself!)
The margin of 41 points has now occurred 99 times.

Sherwood 15-22-112 d Mt Gravatt 5-3-33
Played 33: Sherwood 12 – Mt Gravatt 21 (QAFL 2001-2004, 2009-2010, 2014-2025)
Overall 91: Sherwood 51 – Mt Gravatt 40 (1968-1982, 2001-2004, 2009-2010, 2014-2025)
This score has never occurred before in QAFL fixtures.
Sherwood has won their past three games against Mt Gravatt.
The Magpies have scored their 400th QAFL goal against Mt Gravatt (404-362-2786).
The margin of 79 points has now occurred 42 times.

Noosa 8-14-62 d Wilston Grange 5-9-39
Played 13: Wilston Grange 10 – Noosa 3 (2011-2013, 2021-2025)
Overall 42: Wilston Grange 15 – Draw 1 – Noosa 26 (1998-2000, 2002-2013, 2021-2025)
This score has never occurred before in QAFL fixtures.
The result breaks a 4-game winning streak for Wilston Grange against Noosa.
The margin of 23 points has now occurred 118 times.

Not a lot to spruik about this week. Hopefully a full round this week will provide more to discuss.

It’s a real shame (for a different reason) that several games were postponed last weekend – and here is why:
When Morningside play their third game this season, it will be their 1,500th premiership fixture (for a result) in QAFL-related competitions. Given the Panthers have a bye in Round 2, this game would have occurred in Round 4.
Also, when Wilston Grange play their fourth game this season, they will draw level with Sandgate as having played 1,060 games. That would put them in equal third for the most games played by a club in the QAFL competitions (behind Morningside and Mayne). The Gorillas have no early season byes, so this milestone would have occurred in Round 4.
Based on the original schedule, guess which opponents both clubs have in Round 4? That’s right, each other.
It would have represented a cool moment of synchronicity. I’m sure it is all a coincidence, and was not planned. However, the weather has wrecked all that now.
The milestones will still occur – only now, they will not be in the same match.

For anyone interested:

Round 2

Labrador V Noosa

Played 7: Labrador 4 – Noosa 3 (2021-2024)
Last time they met: Round 17, 2024 – Labrador won by 68 points.
The two clubs had never met until Noosa was promoted to the QAFL in 2021. Across the seven clashes so far, Noosa has kicked 95 goals – so only five more for the ton.
Labrador reached the ton last year: so far they have kicked 100 – 100 – 700 against Noosa.

Coorparoo V Broadbeach
Played 0: Coorparoo 0 – Broadbeach 0 (0000-0000)
Last week, we spoke about the fact that Coorparoo (whether the Roos or the Kings) had never met Palm Beach in a premiership fixture, at any Senior-grade level…and still haven’t.
Well, this week it is déjà vu all over again. The Roo Kings will meet the Cats for the very first time.
(Advance preview: Next week, Coorparoo meet Wilston Grange – and we are dealing with some decent numbers there.)

Mt Gravatt V Palm Beach Currumbin
Played 21: Mt Gravatt 2 – Palm Beach 19 (2014-2024)
Last time they met: Round 2, 2024 – The Lions won by 173 points.
The two clubs first met when the QAFL was formed to underpin the defunct NEAFL. And since that time, it seems astounding that the ledger is so heavily in favour of the Lions. Palm Beach has reached a score of 100+ on 12 occasions, whereas Mt Gravatt has only the two centuries. Five games have resulted in a margin of 2 goals or less – and Palm Beach has won four of those.

Redland Victoria Point V Maroochydore
Played 7: Redland Vic Point 6 - Maroochydore 1 (2021-2024)
Overall 17: Redland Vic Point 8 – Maroochydore 9 (1993-1997, 2021-2024)
Last time they met: Round 8, 2024 – Redland Vic Point won by 48 points.
In the QAFL, Maroochydore is only three points short of an aggregate of 500 against the Sharks (72 – 65 – 497).
The two clubs competed in the BAFL from 1993 to 1997 when the Roos were extremely strong for the competition.

Surfers Paradise V Sherwood
Played 24: Surfers Paradise 11 - Sherwood 13 (2011-2024)
Overall 40: Surfers Paradise 16 – Sherwood 24 (1999-2000, 2005-2008, 2011-2024)
Last time they met: Round 19, 2024 – The Demons won by 69 points.
Surfers Paradise is currently on a seven game winning streak – which matches the fortunes of Sherwood a few years earlier.
It has definitely been a tight tussle in their QAFL years: Surfers Paradise only need 34 points to reach 2,000 against Sherwood – and the Magpies only require 122 to reach 2,000 against the Demons.

Aspley V Wilston Grange
Played 6: Aspley 6 - Wilston Grange 0 (2022-2024)
Overall 27: Aspley 11 – Draw 1 – Wilston Grange 15 (1998-2000, 2002-2008, 2022-2024)
Last time they met: Round 18, 2024 – Aspley won by 36 points.
In the realms of the QAFL, the Gorillas have been stung by the Hornets every time. The closest game between the two occurred in Round 5 last year when Aspley was triumphant by 35 points.
Prior to these past few years, Wilston Grange enjoyed a comprehensive run of successes against Aspley.

As usual, if anyone disagrees with any details, or has more information to share, please let me know – I am definitely happy to correct any records I have stored.

Enjoy. :thumbsu:
