I hope Pou is invited into the coaches box to learn the game from that perspective. He is such an intense and driven personality he might drive people crazy in the coaches box but he may also start to see the patterns in the game and apply it to his role when he gets back on the ground.

Windy would have been playing regardless of these injuries, he is a much better player than a lot give him credit for. If people need evidence go back and watch last years early game against Collingwood, he just needs to bring that consistently.

Windy played 19 games in 2023, and 15 in 2024.
His total possessions went down, with less games, but look at his contested possessions and clearances.

2023. Disposals 304. Clearances 18 Tackles 48 Contested Possessions 83
2024. Disposals 271. Clearances 51 Tackles 77 Contested Possessions 133.
Tracking very very nicely.

and yes , against Collingwood , he had 16 contested possessions, 7 clearances, 6 tackles, an elite performance.

How many post training sessions do you think Robert Harvey did without issue?

Some people will just get injured doing exercise when they go really hard and Philipou is a super hard trainer. We are vastly over thinking this all.
Think Banger missed 12 games across 1993-1995 due to some soft tissue injuries that may have been exacerbated by his training habits.

Dow and Phillipou played a total of 23 games for us last year averaging 15 possessions a game so having neither of them for the first half of the season may not be as big an issue as people are making out.

Our biggest loss last year was undoubtedly Crouch, so if McCrae can get back to his 2022/23 midfield outputs then him, Steele, Clark, Jones, Sinclair, Windhager, Sinclair etc can form a very functional midfield group.

Hope you're right, personally I don't rate Sinclair as a mid (especially as two separate mids like in your list) and think we're better off with him at half back. I've given up on getting much out of Clark. And Jones will be great until he gets injured. I'm not sure we're super strong in there unless absolutely everything goes right.

People need to relax a little bit. We could very well have Dougal & Ro back for round 1.

Pou is disappointing, however he will be back at some stage and we have plenty of depth (for once) to cover him.

Boyd can fill a gap either as the number one ruck, or to give Ro a chop out.

Garcia/ Carroll probably get more of an opportunity now. Even Windy & Clark get more of a chance to lock their spots down. If Jones stays fit I’d guess he would be in the rotation.

At least they’ve happened now and not in March. Every club gets injuries and it is what it is, I’m sure the professionals know what they’re doing.

Seems like other teams suffer Injuries as well as they load up for a football season.

No problem being disappointed, maybe be just a bit rational and understand injuries happen to every club all the time.

What have we got in Carroll? An outside mid who's already behind Byrnes and Wilson, and maybe not far in front of Travaglia.

Yes Banger overtrained. If he felt he did not run enough in a game he would also sometimes go for a run afterwards.

Once he excepted " Less was More" he soft-injuries injuries abated.

I wonder how well the post-training sessions are monitored? As I know a lot of players go into the club on weekends or do laps in their own time. That you would think might come into play with some of these injuries?
All clubs monitor load, diet, recovery and sleep to assess the risk of injury and determine when load management is required. Unfortunately, this also requires the player to report any niggles/feelings of an abnormal nature. Often with stress related injuries there are issues prior to pain being present and when pain does present its sometimes too late.
In the instance of Pou it’s very possible he felt some discomfort, and associated it with his high load long before he reported it to the club

It’s quite depressing after the injury news thinking our season may be shit already. Again.
Haven’t even hardly been able to come in here and read about it.
Any training reports to add a bit of positivity???

He can also play inside. Carroll is probably the player we recruited to replace Macrae or Pou if they were injured - quite similar types all relatively tall, good ball users, contest winners

Also, every squad needs a depth player that can play anywhere between the arcs

I have my doubts. Is there any evidence he would be able to do that?
Inside skills were not listed amongst his strengths before he was drafted.
As an insider he has less experience than Clark, Jones, Windhager and probably Garcia.

STRENGTHS:

  • Disposal efficiency
  • Decision making
  • Clean hands
  • Athleticism
  • Versatility
  • Upside
  • Class

He was part of the centre bounce rotation at Carlton when he got games. As you can see in the below picture, he was getting centre bounces ahead of Matt Kennedy when both in the team

His draft year was 4 years ago, that 'upside' trait would've accounted for his potential ability to play inside. He's been able to develop that at Carlton and just needs opportunity to consistently string games together in that role

I could attend centre bounces, and i wouldn't get the ball either.
Kennedy got more contested possessions and clearances than Carroll at that time.
I don't really rate Kennedy either. Has occasional OK games.

Yes, what was the club thinking in restocking with a large group of excellent young draftees, plus Macrae, a quality player but at a great trade price, and Carroll as free ready to go player, when they could have stocked up instead with a bunch of older players that other clubs no longer wanted.

Personally I am tired of the treading water approach and much prefer that we are rebuilding mainly via youth.

The issue is our youth will only be replacing our current best players.
If this is another year of finishing circa 14th- we're idiots for not trying to cash in one of sinclair or marshall for top draft picks.

Actually 3 wins outside the bottom 4 last year. And we were technically closer to the top 8 being only 2 wins and percentage away.

I stand corrected- though the last second snags goal flips that equation of course.

The main point is that it's not a stretch for us to be on 'bottom 4 watch' given where we finished last year and the subsequent ins and outs to our best 22.

Hard to mount a reasonable case as to how we will do any better than last year.
Much easier to argue we will do worse.

There are plenty of reasons why we can improve on last year.
I’ll start you off. A healthy Max King who starts to realise his potential and some ready made midfield relief in the form of Jack Macrae.
