None of those you’ve listed have the potential to key position defenders long term, except for Barrat who may be undersized.

None of the guys you listed are genuine FBs or CHBs apart from Cordy (I think I can speak for everyone when I say we're in trouble if he's in our best 22 at any point from now on)

Caminiti has shown an ability to read the ball and intercept mark while accounting for a man. Also has the mature body to play on the monsters. Once he learns the craft and tidies up his ball use I think he'll be great in defence while we give the likes of Keeler more opportunity as forwards

Because Hastie is a skinny flanker 190cms, Arie is developing a defensive game and a tank at present he struggles at VFL level, McLennan is 188cms tall, Cordy is a back up only a really poor option (if not contracted would have been delisted), Barrat may be capable but its a big ask for a first year kid.

It may not occur but for me its the obvious positional shift, he doesnt have to stay there forever just until Barrat or Tauru are capable of taking over.

Agree with this. Our forward line will be very top heavy with Sharman, King, Caminiti and Owens. To date Sharman has shown to be a more impressive forward than Caminiti. Caminiti looks more capable defensively and has the required size to play genuine key position defence. In addition, Keeler looks a more natural forward.

As for the new guys, they’ll need some time to develop but if all goes to plan it will be great to have some options and flexibility.

Caminiti at this stage is a handy tall player who is strong and can take a contested mark, but we are still to see what is his most effective position is- might be a forward, might be a back, but in the end, players just have to play top footy and put their hands up for selection, and if played in a certain position, then work to own that position.

I remember the great G-Train excelling as a backman when he started with us. I have one questionable memory of him playing on and beating Wayne Carey in one match. Commentators actually used the "looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane" expression at the start of the game but I think he was lauded at the end. So long ago, who knows how much of that is accurate but he definitely did alright as a backman for at least some weeks before he went forward again and ripped the game apart!

I want to see Hammer do that.

There's a huge difference between FB and CHB.

We aren't looking to replace dougal at FB.

We are trying to replace a mobile agile KPD with a big endurance base. In other words a genuine CHB.

Hammers issue is his tank. He can't stay in games long enough. Hammer is more dougal than battle.

Trying to get hammer to run up and down the ground is a recipee for disaster.

I'm amazed at how many people leave Butler out. He's the only player on the list that can do his job. And how much better were we for him being in the team. Admittedly he rejoined the team with a few towards the end of the season which helps.

I reckon if things turned out well then he could potentially be a Balta or McGovern from Carlton type. Kind of lanky and awkward but effective defender.

He seemed to be able to read the play quite well and take an intercept mark when played in the role last year.

Two huge question marks. His defensive ability as a forward has been terrible. Always gets caught behind his man. The other, can he kick 25-50m bullet passes to a teammate? Both essential skills in that role.

Clearly there has to be a plan for the role and Hammer was given a go there last year. The obvious long term solution is Tauru.

Ross singled out Hammer as a key defender after he did pretty well on Daniher (with their midfield running rampant).

He also mentioned him playing in defence the week before Max was ruled out for the season.

That's where all the Hammer in defence comes from. I don't mind it TBH.

Butler had two lots of ankle surgery last off season. He was one of a few that didn't come good until the end of the year. That coincided with our better form.

Would also love to see Hammer learn G-Train's 'Umpire Shield' move. Wait for ump to set the mark and play on immediately so he was in the defender's way. Unstoppable.
