But where do Prestia, Dow and Hopper play when not in the middle? The bench? We saw last year as forwards it doesn’t work
They can go to the bench, they can have stints at HF, but only small stints.

Great photo of Jacob in the photo gallery from training, also featured on X.
Looks like Mansell falls over trying to catch him.
Looking forward to match sim.

Really? No interest in what the new coach brings to the group? No interest in how the younger players on the list perform? No interest in a new lineup which will inevitably happen?
Geez, we’ve been really spoilt winning those three flags. I can’t wait to see how the next tiger team takes shape. Could be a little bumpy to start with given new coach and game style tweaks but looking forward to seeing what transpires
I think that's half the issue, such unknowns, we're likely to get pumped more times than we'll care to sit through, hard to see the likes of lynch limp thru another season, our list is OK but the depth falls out dramatically which zaps a bit of interest.

Never been this disinterested in the upcoming season since the start of 2017. Just not feeling it.
I'm excited. We've had the same coach for 14 years and outside of a brief period between 2017-2020, it wasn't always great footy.

This is a fresh start, can't wait to see us and how the players play and respond under Yze.

To me after 2021 season where we bombed, I kind of thought Hardwick has gotten everything he could out of us and so the last couple years have felt a bit stale for me.

You say this every preseason lol
yeah and I havent watched a non tigers game since shocking changed the rules to stop our dynasty

only follow it in the oppo thread

Ceaser has been mentioning that he has been quite impressed with Kozi over the past few weeks

I really have no idea what to make of him so looking forward to see what he brings for us this year

Also mentioned Lynch has stepped up his training running at higher intensity with direction changes as well as light ball skills

Possibly but I think we’re better than what you think. Lots of unknowns with the younger players due to maintaining faith in the flag winners, but there’s a number of good ones among them yet to blossom imo

I'm hanging for the footy, I can't wait to see the team under Yze. The game style. Will we see a return of the full-on pressure on the opposition that was our trademark and has since been copied by Copywood and Kingsley's giants.

Also, taking the game on through the corridor, overall setups, and team dynamics. What youngsters can break in? Exciting times.

People like Josh Jenkins and Cam Mooney have NFI. They wouldn't know about our youngsters and think we will be the same as in 2023. Pies in 2021 finished 2nd last and in 2022 under a new coach played in a prelim. GWS no finals in 2022 but in 2023 with a new coach played in a prelim. Let's not write this team off, if we stay healthy yes a big if but if we do, we will surprise many and make the 8. Heck in 2023 which let's face it was a disaster we were still in the hunt for a top 8 berth with 4 rounds to go.

Had tom lynch played we would've played finals but wouldn't have gone far as overall the team was cooked. The key is the game plan going into 2024, just look at the Pies they have some really average players in that team but geez I thought they played our game style really well, their players bought in superbly under McCrea.

Going down memory lane well not that long ago In 2022 we were the highest-scoring team. Lost 5-6 games under 10 points to North, freo, GC, swans, and Cats when Prestia went down. Win 3 of them and we make the top 4.

2023 was a write-off in many ways but now with Yze, there is a new lease of life. A new voice, players rejuvenated, and from what I've heard players are hungry, competing for spots and loving their footy again. So many players have trimmed down, achieved new PBs, and looking super fit. Just on Graham, it's the best shape I've seen him in.
As we know last year many players got too comfortable, and standards dropped not only by the players but the whole coaching fraternity.

Keep hearing too many times about our older players, look at the Cats who won the flag in 2022 with the oldest list and 2023 pies second oldest. They will have around 10 players over 30 in 2024.

I am confident in our midfield, it bats deep with Taranto, Hooper, Prestia, Bolton, Dusty, Baker, Dow, and Graham (Sonsie and McAuliffe will get their chances).

I also feel equally confident with the forwards, it looks very strong with Lynch, Balta, Kosi, Martin, Bolton, Taranto, Cumberland, Coulthard, Baker, Graham, and Clarke with Mansell and Junior getting their chances. Need to see Seth Campbell play some ressies and reassess as he has speed, a good tank, and is a very smart player.

Not 100% on the backline, well more so the talls, Gibcus we shouldn't expect too much he has bulked up but hasn't played for a year. Grimes, can he stay fit? Need his experience and smarts to help Gibbo and Young.
Tylar Young looks bigger than last year and will shoulder a lot of the responsibility on oppo key forwards due to Balta going forward. Vlustuiin, Short, Broad, and Rioli are all guns. Brown and Tresize will get their chances.

The wings likely will come from Pickett, Macca, Ross, Ralphsmith, Banks, and maybe Clarke. Need speed and run. Which two get the nod, I'm guessing Ross, and a flip of the coin on one of the others.

Bring on 2024 :muscle:

Yes he's an inside mid, but not one of them offers the point of difference that he does, Pace and agility. he is a must if hes playing well.
Not sure where this myth about Dow's pace has come from. In his draft year he was a 3.06 for his sprint times which is bog average for a midfielder.

Agility yes he was overall 3rd in the agility test.

You might see him dart around players in the contest but you wont see him sprinting away. This also means that you will see players sprinting away from him at the contest which means we need to get the mix right in the midfield.

Prestia, Hopper , Taranto , Dow all average pace.

It might mean the differance between KANE MCAULIFFE who has a 2.93 sprint result gettting the nod ahead of Dow potentially

I think in the context of being an inside mid agility is more important
It’s why Bolton also effective inside

Graham is regularly one of the fastest players we have on field but looks slow when playing inside

Yeah for sure, I don't think our list is horrible but every single team has depth and quality (more so) which makes things hard. It's the price we pay for mega success and it's fine.

You need more than 3 mids in onfield 18 and 22. That being said, because of his speed I'd be starting home ahead of everyone except taranto.

Starting: Nank, Taranto, Dow, Hopper.
Rotating: Ruck 2, Prestia, Bolton, McAuliffe.
I think you actually need 9 midfielders. For simplicity
Forward/mids like Dusty, Bolton, Toranto, Graham, Baker and possibly Cumberland and McAuliffe would play on average 1/3 forward, 1/3 mid and 1/3 bench. Pure mids like Dow, Prestia and Hopper would do 1/2 mid 1/3 bench and then possibly forward or defence.
With the amount of running, you need to factor in the time each player spends on the bench recovering. Similarly, you need 3 wingers to allow for bench time. Obviously, the amount of time each player spends forward etc depends on their role and the opposition matchup.
Picking the 3 rotations that are balanced for speed and inside grunt is the key.

If Kosi can be a 30 goal a year 2nd KPF crashing packs and chopping out in the ruck, then this trade is pure gold.

I am not saying he is a dasher, but in congestion, he's a quick as anyone.

100% thats essentially what Jack Delivered last year without the benefit of Lynch and Balta

No reason why Kozi can’t produce better as well

Speed over a short distance is pretty important. Dusty and Cotch have/had good speed over a short distance which bought them time when they had the ball. I see Dow's speed a bit similar except that his lateral speed is through the roof, not quite Bolton but who is. If he can break 10m at speed then he has more time to distribute the ball, which he needs because so far his distribution has been lacking a bit of composure... not quite Taranto, but who is. I imagine he has concentrated on defensive running as well, because Taranto did to much of that last year, he needs help on the rebound. It think that is why his disposal was very average, buggered all the time.

Our midfield may not need Bolton and Martin there so much if Dow comes good. That ability to skip away is what we have been lacking in the middle. Prestia surprisingly had that skip, and the fact that you can't tackle him, but he has not had it over the last two season. Has had a good preseason apart from the last week or so so who knows.

Taranto, Prestia, Hopper, Dow around the ball. Taranto can rest forward with spells from Dusty and Bolton. Can't expect McAuliffe to pressuring this early in the season, he needs to play VFL and get himself ready for the next jump.
Sonsie is out for a few weeks and will probably have another or two in the VFL before he is considered, so we should have a good idea of the midfield 6-8 weeks in or so.

Communication from the club around this has been shocking.
I know

all the other clubs have their first praccy information while we are putting giant camels up at training

I think that McAuliffe is going to really surprise many, especially in the media. From what I’ve read and seen in limited clips, he’s playing mid and right in the thick of the action in match sims.
I reckon he will play from game one, but will be rested at times. He’s just got it imo

I doubt he will play in front of Dow first up, is there going to be 5 on the bench this year. Preseason is a lot different to the real stuff, but yes he looks like he's got it, he's very aggressive which is a big tick. Speed as well is a great attribute.
