These wet dreams some posters have about new gameplans and how top secret they are and how the element of surprise is the critical ingredient are pretty ridiculous. Complex game plans or game plans that are significantly different to your old game plan take years to recruit the right players to make it work, train it into the players and get them to buy into it and develop unconscious competence at executing it. It is not something you come up with and then just tell the players about it and unveil it in round 1 a month later and everybody else is bamboozled by it.

There are many different game plans that can succeed. It comes down quality of players you have, having the right players for that game plan, having the players buy into it and having it be sufficiently drilled into them that they can execute it seemlessly. Which takes time. It is not about secrecy. The game plans of clubs like Richmond, Geelong, Melbourne etc are not secret. Everybody knows what their game plan is before you play them. That doesn't mean you can stop it nor does it mean you can just go out and copy it next week and execute it at the same level as those clubs who have spent years recruiting for and practicing it.

I would actually enjoy Simmo going full Mighty Ducks Coach Bombay style and practicing specific surprise set plays.

Twist call for the Flying V from the bench when we're 56 points down against Gold Coast round 9.

Mid season recruit a local player with no skills in other areas but a special way of shooting at goal to be our wildcard come from behind guarantee come finals time.

We've got the bash brothers sort of in the making but they'll need to get suspended enough throughout the season to keep opposition coaches guessing come game day.

For those poo pooing on secrecy watch those movies then tell me the element of surprise isn't necessary you ****ers

“Cole” is the word of this preseason.

A small defender who is not a creator nor, to be honest that good, is our great white hope.
The back end of 2021 cole was one of our best performed and one of the only defenders to break the lines once Simpson dropped his stagnant slow kicking game out of defence.

He pushed up to the wing at times and even snagged a couple of goals .

It was the best he has played for the club and showed he had more strings to his bow than a lockdown small defender .

He has good pace , good disposal, tackles and is hard as nails .

Both Fremantle and West Coast had match sims today

So far we’ve had a tweet from Lachy Reid saying Yeo and Ginbey were rotating between midfield and half back and a newspaper report expressing surprise at an appearance by Jackson Nelson and some solid notes on players doing laps away from the match sim

Nothing from the club

The best info we’ve got is that series of tweets Nuffington Post just posted from a fan watching through the gates

Meanwhile, Fremantle have posted numerous photos, videos and descriptions on Twitter and there’s be updates from a number of journalists who’ve been watching

I’m not having a crack at our social media people because they’ve been pretty good this off season and I’m sure we’d see more from them if they were given license to do so

This is on the higher ups, starting with Nisbett, who have an obsession with secrecy. The contrast between the two clubs is massive
Freo need a good spin department.

Distracting the fans from their miserable history would be a full time job

I don’t know why they put Clark on a wing. Not his natural position. Unfortunately I see a lot of WAFL time for Clark this year, unless we’re hit with injuries.

Sent from my iPhone using BigFooty.com
Its because clark is slow as treacle and you can't get away with that at AFL level playing on ball unless your elite at other attributes.

Looking at other young upcoming onballers and only culley has not got pace .

Ginbey , Hewett, Chesser, O'Neill and even hough all have good breakaway speed and excellent spread .

Culley to play that patty cripps role of extractor then push forward to create a mismatch inside 50

I dont really understand how WCE thought they would get it brought forward.

You can simply request - it's not a matter of being powerful, the judge will consider it on a case by case basis.

Yeah absolutely agree with this.

Got a lot more mojo than Nelson and just as much heart - he's not going to be a top echelon player in the comp but I reckon if he can come back at full health he'll end up being one of those players we'll be arguing in on the main board rolling AA thread as underrated (but won't get in).

He's also (probably obviously) a personal favourite of mine - like the way he goes about it.

We have a lot of back flank types but not many who have the skillset to lock down on smalls whilst still being offensive enough to not be able to leave alone.

Lol all these half backs recruited and shuey being thrown around there shows you all about what they think about his linebreaking ability.

He will play first 6-10 games because of credits. But then in and out based on need. Not sure what you remember in back end of 2021 but all I remember is us getting thumped game after game. Him breaking lines tells you everything wrong about how we play.

And he is not young. People need to stop grouping him with young players.

Disrespect of Cole is crazy. Looking forward to him proving these goldfish memory people wrong. Walks into our B22 because he deserves to be there not credits.
Who is disrespecting him?

Most people seem to be saying he’s a solid player. Which he is.

I think Cole is at significant risk of being pushed out and his career is at a crossroads. He is a role player, not a top tier player. And they have a bunch of recent draftees who they will want to get in the 22 and get games into them (presumably). Including players who were drafted to play midfield but don't have the tank or muscle to survive in the midfield at AFL level yet. And some who were specifically recruited as small defenders/HBF types. Given they can't play the intended future midfielders in the midfield yet but want them in the 22, the non - key position and non - midfield spots in the 22, such as Cole's, are where they will try and squeeze them in. Cole will need to find career best form this year and next in order to survive, and even then he still might get pushed out and rendered as not included in future plans anyway.

Cole is contracted until 2025. One of only 8 players on our list with a contract beyond 2024

He isn’t going anywhere and if you listened to McGoverns press conference last week, Cole is highly rated internally

Really like this guy’s attitude

I recall him getting torched a couple of times in that game against Geelong because he wasn’t able to keep up with the likes of Dangerfield and Selwood. So he watches tape of that game to learn from it and drive himself to improve

Hopefully we’re in his ear to extend his contract beyond 2023

Yep, Cole is B22, a GF+finals player, with lots of experience, not credits.
Was recently called 'a much required player' by the coach and is respected by the players.

Being contracted doesn't mean you won't get pushed out of the 22 and relegated the WAFL and not offered a new contract when your current one expires.

And what do you expect McGovern to say when asked a question about another player by the media? "No, he's shit and we don't think he will be in the 22 for much longer"? They are trained by the media department to dribble rubbish littered with cliches and with a massive positive tone to it on anything they are asked about, especially if it is another person at the club. It is not McGovern's place to publicly speculate on another players position within the 22 going forward so don't expect honest answers when you ask questions like that.

You can't fit 30 players into 22. If you want to keep going with Shuey, Yeo, Hurn, Duggan, Cripps and the rest of the older players aswell as bring in the likes of Chesser, Hough, Bazzo, Ginbey, Hewitt, Culley, Hunt etc etc then something has to give somewhere in terms of somebody else being pushed out. The fan boi types on here always want to pretend that no hard decisions ever have to be made. Nothing uncomfortable or sad ever has to be endured such as player who has been loyal and who always tried his hardest like Cole being surpassed and having to be moved on. Spots in the 22 are a finite resource. You only have 22 of them in any given week. And assuming they are good enough young players develop much faster when they are getting a game versus when they are not. You will have to make a choice between squeezing somebody else out to play them or not. You can't play 30 blokes because it will make you sad if you have to leave some guys out if you are forced to only pick 22.

Any new game plan involving taking the game on instead of kickong into the defensive goal square will suit cole down to a tee. Like others have said he was one of the few players to run and carry. Surprised he didnt get dropped for it
Really hope none of the young mids/forwards are used in the backline this year, with rioli gone, cripps a year older, kennedy gone and yeo and shuey injury prone we should be utilising them in those areas
