I just don't see why we couldn't have kept a mobile 200cm player on our list. It's not like they fall out of trees. There were a few times we could have used that type the past couple of years.

Fun fact: Free kicks aside Joel Selwood was a far better footballer & leader than Travis Boak.

I don’t think you can put those free kicks aside. Remove those possessions from his ‘body of work’ and his influence on games would reduce significantly.

I don’t think you can put those free kicks aside. Remove those possessions from his ‘body of work’ and his influence on games would reduce significantly.

That would imply every single free he was given above the boak meter were unwarranted duckwood moments which would be a stretch even for the most ardent Selwood hating ignoramus.

Why does it imply that? It’s simply pointing out that his reputation as a footballer includes an advantage that is so far outside the statistical norm that any comparison with other players becomes meaningless.

Boak has been a great clubman (still haven’t completely worked out what that is ) but as a Footballer there’s a lot of daylight between him and Selwood.
Always said we should have picked up Selwood but that’s water under the bridge now.
Can see Boak staying on at the club in some way after he retires,comes across as a very genuine person and would be handy in some role.

There's a reality people miss though he stuck his head in the hole more than anyone hence the permanant bandage jobs, you do that you will draw frees and unfortunately struggle to string a sentence together as a commentator when you retire. There's a difference between that and the duckwood stuff which I'm not denying, but he was a genuinely courageous player.

Statistically there isn't. Boak at his peak when he finished second in the Brownlow or whatever was very good. I think people's view is coloured by him being at the tail end, and also those years when daddy parked him in a weird defensive half forward mode..

Selwood wasn't a big goalkicker either. In fact Boak has about 30 more than him.

The key thing with Selwood was standing up in big moments, which is when trav would usually miss a crucial goal. Also Selwood "standing up" was usually him ducking his way into a free kick in the middle.

Put Boak in the Geelong team/system and he's probably an all time great..
