Hi all,

Having always used a standard PC with only a vague understanding of Mac's, could someone explain to me what the differences are?

For example, for gaming, photo editing, web design etc?

What are the pros and cons?

Thanks everyone.. :)

Luke

photo editing macs>pcs
games pcs>>>>macs
pcs are far more likely to get trojans viruses etc
much greater range of free/shareware for pcs
neither will sit happily for years without much frustration and money being spent
far greater help community for pcs

Games arent available as soon as the PC on Macs. There also isnt as wider range of games.

For web design and photo editing, trust me, Macs are much better then PC's.

Mac's dont crash as much as PC's do.

Me, I love Mac's. As much as people bag them I really like them. Thats probably because I like web design and graphic design. However, I would always stick by a PC rather then a Mac. If I had enough money to buy two computers I would get a Mac aswell but I dont.

Stick with the PC. If your using Photoshop, Dreamweaver.. that sort of stuff then you'll be right.

That's only if the PC user dosen't know what they're doing.
Have to concur, have been a techie for both macs and pcs, and the rate of failure not due to external influences such as dumb users, shoddy third party software etc is about the same.

If you want to play lots of games get a PC, anything else mac. I don't know of many who have gone to mac and changed back.

Agreed. PCs are unecessarily complex and crash, and look like crap (interface).

Go down to a Mac shop at a quiet time of the day and have a play for a while and see what you think.

trojans and viruses dont effect macs= false. cos why do i have mac heads coming in looking for virus protection programs

software for macs almost non existent or just a lot more expensive

macs are status symbols (+ipods)
pcs are a workhorse

either brand i must agree its the user that stuffs up the machine, not the machine limiting the user

Please name me one virus and one trojan for OS X.

I've been brought up with Macs - dad won't let a PC into the house! :p Very excited because I got a iBook G4 for Christmas!
There aren't any virus's for OS X, the only thing a bit dodgy apparently is if you try to download Microsoft Office or something like that but other than that there aren't any virus's unlike PCs where there are hundreds.
One of my friends who is a big PC fan actually told me once "you should get a normal computer that crashes* Why would I want that? The only problem I've ever had with one of my computers was when I had too much stuff on it so I was running out of room on the Hard Drive and even then it wasn't a major issue it just made it run a bit slower.
The only thing I hate it waiting around for games (ie having to wait 'til May to get Sims 2) other than that Macs are WAAAAAAYYYY much better than PCs.

PC are better, Macs are confusing

It's only what you're used to. I can use both PC and Mac because at school we have PCs but at home I have a Mac but I have to say I find Macs a lot easier to use, but once again that's probably because I've been brought up with them.

I have used both Mac and PC for both work and leisure. That is my qualification for this opinion.

I am a Mac user. I am in the graphic design industry, which means I spend a lot of time behind a computer monitor, my preference in Mac because I find that time is much more enjoyable using Apple products.

To be perfectly honest, I reckon you should use whatever platform you are most comfortable with, as you're likely to be more productive. Having used both, it is my opinion that OSX is far more stable than Microsoft's current offerings and the OSX operating system is far more intuitive, asthetically pleasing and quick.

I have found that 99% of people that bag Macs have never really used one for longer than about 10 minutes. Everyone is going to find a new OS confusing at first, that's natural. Give it some time and you'll never go back.

People that say that there is no software for Mac are just plain ignorant. With the exception of gaming (get a PS2) you would be very hard pressed to find something that a PC can do, that a Mac can't.

As someone else has mentioned, it is very rare for someone to switch from PC to Mac and then back again.

My dad has been using Macs for 40 years, he uses his computer every day for work and ofcourse just surfing the net etc and has only had a major crash once. Can any of you beat that with a PC? Be honest!
I've been using Macs for around 14 years (since I could understand what a computer was!) and have never had a real problem either.

OK I was just estimating and was probably exagerating but you know what I mean. He's been using them for around 30 years.

Then how come when I was in the city the other week and went into Myers and then David Jones they both had plenty of Macs where there were more people looking at Macs than PCs?
Many PC people are changing over to Macs after iPods, seeing how good Apple stuff is and wanting a nice iBook or powerBook to go with it.

try the computer stores who actually are dedicated to computers not to many macs in there.

ask the staff at myer and david jones to show you how to work a mac, bet you they wouldnt know how.

Yup, well said MM.

Stay away from Myer & DJ for computer equipment. Plastic people with plastic minds selling plastic ideas. I know too well these folks ain't the real deal for giving you the REAL lowdown on thier own Mac's let alone computers. And they'll overcharge anyway.

Ipods are fads and hopefully (as with all fads) it will quickly finish so that people can buy real technology (when I say this I'm not saying the iPod is crap, just that it is nowhere near the comp).

I've used many different macs, learnt to use them and I would NEVER pick one over a PC. I just don't like them. Not for photo editing, not for cd authoring, flash animation, nothing. Don't like them. They have never worked as efficiently as my PC. It might change eventually when I see apple design a computer which actually appears to serve its function rather than work as a fashion accessory...but until that day...

Just on, trojans and virus' for OS X, I think its the case of not even bothering. Why bother when you can infect many more PC's running Windows. Although mac owners would be easy targets as most mac owners I know aren't really 'computer literate'. I'll generalise and say this is similar on the larger scale.

Going OT, Isn't the reason Microsoft software appears to have such security flaws is because D***heads spend their lives trying to hack the software...I bet if half the time was spent testing out the security holes in Linux we would have a very different look on OS's.
