Crows sign star junior athlete

ADELAIDE has signed one of Australia’s brightest young middle-distance runners on a scholarship.

Sam Martyn, 15, is rated second nationally for his age group over 800m and 1500m. In last year’s national under-16 championships in Sydney he finished runner-up both in the 800m in 1:56:38 and in the 1500m in 3:59:84.

During physical testing for the Crows’ New South Wales Scholarship program, he ran 9.19 for the 3km time trial (easily better than anyone has run at any under-18 draft camp) and a 15+ beep test – also considered outstanding.

Martyn, from Merimbula on the south coast of New South Wales, is the Crows’ second New South Wales Scholarship player, after Broken Hill’s Taylor Walker, who was added to the Crows primary list in November.

Crows recruiting manager Matthew Rendell said the club would continue to encourage Martyn’s athletic training.

“Sam is an ideal candidate for the scholarship scheme,” Rendell said.

“He grew up playing soccer and more recently athletics and has only played football for one year.

“Sam loves his football and realises he has a lot of work to do but he has some talents to get him a long way – a strong work ethic, desire and can-do attitude.

“Adelaide Football Club will support his desire to continue to compete and train in athletics as we see that as beneficial to his football.”

South Coast Talent Lands Scholarship

The AFL Scholarship initiative has unearthed another young talent from New South Wales, with the Adelaide Crows this week awarding one of the coveted positions to Merimbula local, Sam Martyn.

The announcement of Martyn's scholarship is a first for the South Coast region since the scheme commenced in 2006 and is a great example for other young players to follow.

In only his first full year of Australian football, the 15 year old Merimbula local impressed many at the Rising Rams Camp held late last year at the Sydney Academy of Sport recording some first class testing results.

ACT/South Coast Talent Program Manager, Jack Masters was thrilled to have a player from the South Coast receive an AFL Scholarship and indicated that Martyn could be the first of a number of young players who could be scholarship listed with an AFL club.

"This is a well deserved opportunity for Sam after a very impressive first year in our game. His athletic capabilities are there for all to see, but perhaps one of the most exciting things about Sam is the level of improvement he has shown in the past 12 months with regard to his AFL specific skills."

"Sam is one of many exciting prospects in the region and hopefully his signing is the first of many from the South Coast"

Martyn, an elite middle distance runner, was discovered at the AFL Community Camp held on the South Coast only 12 months ago and has been fast-tracked through the CATS Under 15s program.

Rated in Australia as the second fastest for his age group in both the 800 metres and 1500 metres, Martyn's athleticism has certainly caught the eye of many AFL clubs along his short but promising AFL journey.

The South Coast teenager is the second player to be scholarship listed to the Adelaide Crows as part of the AFL (NSW/ACT) program. Broken Hill's Taylor Walker was the first signing and has now been added to the primary list for this season.

Martyn will participate in the Under 16s CATS program in 2008, with the aim of gaining selection in the State Under 16s NSW/ACT team to compete at the National Carnival in July on the Gold Coast.

Re: NSW Scholarship player - Sam Martyn

surely the Western Sydney team should be given a few more opportunities to develop these kind of players ?

I realise that its going to be good for the Crows and we should still be allowed our 1 or 2 but you'd think if they want the new team to be popular they will try and fill it with cockroaches ??

Re: NSW Scholarship player - Sam Martyn

Being 15 he's still a little way away from playing at a level that will give us a decent indication of what we are looking at. Wouldn't expect any major news for a while.

Re: NSW Scholarship player - Sam Martyn

Only a week ago CC told us that he made the U/16 NSW squad and is injured. Hopefully he is over his injury (whatever it is) by the Championships. From looking at the squad it doesn't look like it's as simple as getting over his injury. He'll need to prove himself to make the team. I'm pretty sure I'll know someone who will be going to the U/16 Champs and if he is, hopefully I can get him to keep an eye on Martyn if he makes it.

Re: NSW Scholarship player - Sam Martyn

Good news that he is over his injury and particularly that he is getting named in the best for seniors. Hopefully he will be fronting up at the U/16 Championships for NSW. :)

Re: NSW Scholarship player - Sam Martyn

Sounds like he's learning his craft well! :)

How tall is he, by the way?

He is 184cm and 70kg, not a bad size at all for a 15 year old midfielder with the endurance of a elite international athlete:eek:

So far he has played the game only for a couple of years, excelled in the u17s, then in the seniors, hopefully can play well in the under 16s

Admittedly Merimbula is not the highest quality league, but he can only play well where he plays (if that makes sense)

He keeps his Tippett style rise going and we could have someone pretty special on our hands:thumbsu:

Re: NSW Scholarship player - Sam Martyn

Wow, 184cm at his age? He'll probably end up over 190cm. 70kg is a touch light but he has plenty of years to bulk up, hopefully without losing his athletic ability.

He could be a real find!

I wouldn't worry about that weight too much, he's still only what 15 and still growing you'd assume, he's already heavier than Mackay was when we drafted him I think.
