Shame, thought very highly of him as one of the few in Canberra who actually stood for something other than a handout and some nice perks. Even if he went with Palmer I'd like to see him remain in Canberra simply because he will vote for his electorate first, then with his conscious next.

The big loser tp United Australia will be Katter, this will destroy his party before it gets a chance on the federal scence. Will be interesting to see how he goes, could be a chance to get a couple of Senate seats, possibly at the expense of the coalition which would be a good thing in my opinion as I don't like to have one party control both houses.

Hmm the Royal Children's would love that.

Think this way.

Rudd has a motive to do it.

Screwed over for the top job in his mind.
Beaten by a vote in Labor caucus twice.
Gets an opportunity to possibly even win his seat with a greater majority.
Be a pest to both Gillard and Abbott at the same time.

And with him a few other disaffected Labor members looking to shore up their seats inCanberra may follow suit..as well as a few of those Liberals and Nationals not happy with Abbott.

You couldn't fit Rudd's and Palmer's ego in the same room. They both want to be captain, opening bowler and opening batsman as well as score and umpire. The thought is amusing though.

Not a good 24 hours for Clive's party with the Slipper saga and now having to change the party's name.

CLIVE Palmer's bid to create a new political party is today mired in confusion, amid the short-lived recruitment of former speaker Peter Slipper and a renewed push for registration under a new name.
The mining entrepreneur today announced his United Australia Party, formed just three weeks ago, will now be known as the Palmer United Party, to avoid a legal battle with the Australian Electoral Commission.
Mr Palmer and his political allies will now attempt to register the party by the deadline for federal registration tomorrow, with a requirement for 500 signatures.
The setback over the name follows former Liberal turned independent MP Peter Slipper's aborted application to join Mr Palmer's party.
The UAP announced yesterday Mr Slipper had joined the party, only to release a statement late last night saying party members had decided to cancel his membership.
Party members staged a revolt even though Mr Slipper's membership would have guaranteed automatic party registration.

He really should have been doing this 6 months ago, not 6 months before an election.

Going to assume ego led to him adding his name in there. Something wrong with just calling it the United Party? or coming up with a different name?

Where does Clive find these dregs to run for his party ?
In Corangamite [part of Geelong] he's got someone who seems like a total sleazebag named Buddy Rojek.
This bloke is making a dick of himself everyday.First he tries handing out election crap at a girls netball game, then says if he wins he'll have a party at the Belmont Hotel with scantily clad models and a mystery rock band

Now today he's come out and said he'll look at hiring Simonds Stadium for his victory party and get the Violent Femmes to do a concert.

Seems like a genuine nutjob. Excerpt from an interview at

Q. Do you personally believe in climate change?
A. I’ve studied environmental science. I’ve got an A+. I used to pull the pegs out of the ground when developers were building housing developments. I was a young kid. I pulled the pegs out because they were killing my lizards and my frogs and butterflies. So I’m more hard-core greenie than any of these Green people. Based on my understanding of science. I have been reading science books since I was three years old. I love dinosaurs. I don’t think climate change is caused by carbon. I believe it is caused by other factors such as solar cycles, the continental shift, also the urban heat effect where concrete roads and bitumen roads and reforestation of farmland basically allows more energy to be absorbed by earth, and I think we need to investigate that a bit further.

... I think deep down we all love dinosaurs.

Well, nominations have closed and Clive has reached his goal of 150 candidates in the lower house. 17 in the Senate.

I'm not sure how much money the party(which would mainly be funded with Clives money I imagine) would be giving out to the candidates but realistically he would of nearly been better playing the long-term game and entering a smaller amount of election races and giving the party a better chance at winning and slowly building up credibility. Are any of the members in his party a chance at winning in their seats.

$10K per candidate I think - which is pretty measly and you are right he probably would have been better off concentrating resources.

We need more people like this in Parliament. At least you can see the crazy. The rest hide their psycho sleazebag natures too well.

palmer should go to beijing prior to the election.

with the amount of chinese money he has blown, I'm not sure he will come back.......and that would be a good thing

Too late to disendorse, he'll appear on the ballot as a PUP candidate.

In all honesty, reading that article, he seems well suited to represent the PUP.

It gets better with this bloke, now that Palmer has boned him he's starting his own party called ANZAC United Party.
Um....isn't ANZAC a protected name and he wouldn't be allowed to use it ?

If you are thinking of voting for Palmer's party, read this first

The Australian has spent months examining his track record. Verifying the facts that are omitted from his media releases, testing his answers and statements, scrutinising his business ventures, company records, court and legal documents, and hearing the disclosures of senior staff, politicians and others who have been close to him.
The results of this scrutiny do not augur well for democracy or the economy in the event of the Palmer United Party securing the Senate seat in Queensland.

If he wants to run a party that is fine. But he should be forced to give up all his business interests if he wants.

People say that we should cap individual donations and there is some logic in that. No party should be beholden to one individual.

Yet Palmer will directly own the votes of any PUP senator or MP.

And I can see a realistic scenario where an Abbott government may need to negotiate with him to pass legislation.

I don't think give up business interests is required, but it at least needs that non-MP / Senator party hierarchies (all parties) should similarly to those elected by required to register all their assets / business interests. I'd say all candidates should be required to do so as part of registering to be a candidate as well.

A bit of a hatchet job, some of the things The Australian criticise him in there for they would otherwise lionise if the ALP was the one doing the criticism.
