Ovens & Murray discussion 2023

Can never blame one player for a loss, but he has been very ordinary in his two years here. He had a moment to make Albury’s investment worthwhile. Didn’t make the distance from 35 mtr. But The best run GF in country Victoria. Even the all abilities game is good 👍 I actually love the ground lockdown.
35m? Man on the mark was at 40m would’ve kicked from 45m from where I watched. I didn’t think he had the distance from the moment he took the mark.

Very thorough 😉. But yes, I thought he was at least kicking from 45m...probably only a chance earlier in the day.

Watched the live stream of the game and very impressed. I watch a lot of these for various leagues and the O&M is far away the best I watch. Excellent camera work and commentary.

As for the game, a cracking contest. Albury served it up to Yarrawonga but experience and poise in the end got the, home. Gibbons is still good enough to be playing at AFL level and Masters was outstanding. Really liked the game of former AFL outer east player in Williams who was a dangerous target all day. If Yarrawonga were accurate at goal in the first half the game may have been over at half time.

Albury never gave up, Daly and the experienced O’Hara were excellent and the former Griffith Swans in the Conlan boys were excellent and destined for bigger opportunities.

Good for the league to see Yarrawonga win and considering the amount of money they shelled out it was a premiership they needed to win to see a return on investment.

Umpiring was of a good standard although the field umpire in black shoes (poor look) struggled and got tired as the game progressed.

Ground and crowd was fantastic and made the Bendigo FNL grand final which I attended look second rate. Played at Lavington a few times many years ago and it was great then and even better now.

Shaun Mannagh may have played his way on to an AFL list with his performance today for Werribee. He is a ripping player and hope he gets a chance as he is good enough.

Not sure if the Garlett to Albury has been a good investment as what they thought he'd be.
the expectations of being a afl player coming to a country footy comp are always at a high ...but dont forget.. how does this player feel with where he wants to be with his footy now ???? Maybe Garlett still loves to play footy at a good level but does not want to be a expected star ,,,leave him alone , hes done a servicable job for ALbury

Heres some dribble from me, thought id have a crack at GF player ratings. Just my observations from watching the game live with a notepad and pen, will probably eat my words when I get a chance to watch the replay a second time round.

opinions of my own. Great day of country footy.

Albury

Gaynor –
Started slow in the first, Came alive in the 2nd term & solid for the rest of the game. 7

Muller –
Dominant in ruck, often clearing his own ruckwork. Like an extra midfielder at times. Also handy around the ground. 8

Garlett -
Quiet throughout the day, showed glimpses of what he could do. Disposal let him down. Tigers needed abit more of his class that we know he has. 4

Powell -
Wasn’t as damaging through the midfield. Spent a fair bit of time across half forward. Thought he was ok in spurts, threatened to explode on a few occasions. 6

Hillary -
Under the pump early, with Wilson going down, was thrown on Conway and stood up down back. Got better as the day went on. One of Alburys best players I thought. 8

Gilmore -
Underrated across half back. Composed & used the ball well. Got the better of Casey 6

Hodgson -
One of the Tigers better players early on, proved an unlikely goal scorer with 3 snags. Solid game. 7

O’Hara -
Showed his class in the first half out wide, clean with disposal. Dragged Albury back into the game just before half time. Faded late, but proved he could still cut it at O&M level. 7

Page –
Had the job W.Wheeler & kept him to just 3 touches to half time. 6

Miles -
Coach spent most of the day in the engine room. Thought his disposal let him down a couple of times. Created plenty of chances for his side. 7

Daly –
Didn’t get a lot of the ball. Put the team before himself. Sad way to bow out but a great career at Albury. 4

Heiner – Hennessy -
Worked hard, led up & presented superb all game, great mark, just couldn’t convert a couple of his set shots from distance. 7

Grills –
Bit of a quiet one from the skipper, came into the game more in the last qtr. 4

Bice –
Silky smooth on the left. Yarra were very wary of him, great finisher, Tigers maybe could of utilized him a little better. Surely VFL next year. 6

L.Conlan –
Steady on the last line with some solid marks in defense. Probably give him the honors over Williams. 7

Byrne –
Lively down back, clean with disposal. Used the ball well. 6

J.Conlan –
Couldn’t get into the game in the first half, moved higher up the ground after half time & got his hands on the footy abit more. 4

King –
Threw himself at every contest. Couldn’t break the game open like previous weeks. Got more touches as the game went on. Couldn’t fault his effort and commitment. 6

O’Brien –
Didn’t see a heap of it in the first half. His pace was highlighted in the third qtr. 5

Wilson –
Injured his knee early in first qtr and day was done. N/A

Duncan –
Liked his game down back, with his pace got plenty of the ball launching a rebound for Albury, just butchered some of his kicks which let him down. 7

O’Sullivan –
Relieved Muller sparingly in the ruck, looked lively down forward on a few occasions & kicked crucial goal late. 5

Yarrawonga

Fothergill –
Not huge disposal numbers but made them count, especially in the 2nd qtr with two goals. 6

Casey –
Struggled in first half. Lifted after half time after he was moved up the ground and relieved Howe in ruck. 5

Coburn –
Dangerous all day as small forward. Had a purple patch in the 2nd qtr. 6

Whiley –
Mountain of possessions in the middle, a lot of them unnoticed. Wouldn’t be many at Yarra that deserve a flag more than him. Great to see him hold the cup up. 8

Einsporn –
Spent some time in defence and thought his third qtr was his best. 5

Masters –
Captain at his brilliant best down back with intercept and contested marks all day. 8

H.Wheeler –
Showed no signs of rust after missing 3 months. Went to another level in the third qtr along with is brother. 7

Gibbons –
Best on ground, just seemed to be everywhere. We all finally got to see him explode on the big stage injury free. 8

Irvine –
One of Yarras best across half back went to another level in the third qtr. 7

Howe –
Battled hard against Muller, lost the hit out dual but did some nice things of his own around the ground. 5

Wilson –
Hardly sighted in the first qtr, but lifted in the 2nd and was useful throughout the rest of the day. 6

Frauenfelder –
Wasn’t having the best of days in defence, was swung forward in the last and kicked a vital goal. 4

Bruce –
Bit down on his season form but was still handy in patches. Drifted forward with a late goal. 5

Pendergast –
Had the job on Conlan and took the honors. 7

Morey –
Spent abit of time down back, did well then bobbed up forward late and kicked a huge goal. 6

Lovell –
Wasn’t sighted much. Did his role without any fanfare 4

Koopman –
Didn’t seem to have a lot of game time, but earned his place. 3

W.Wheeler
– Blanketed by Page in the first half. Broke the tag after half time and had a great second half. 6

Williams –
Very lively first half, very dangerous in the 2nd qtr in particular when Yarra looked like blowing the game wide open. Bit quieter later in the game. 6

Urquhart –
On and off the bench early. Thought he did some nice things late in the game. 5

Conway –
Started like a house on fire, showing his class in the first with 3 shots on goal. Short on match fitness & faded late. 5

Tyson –
Solid without being spectacular. Played his role down back. 6

Hey O&M!

Why wasn’t there someone to sing our national anthem? The Hume league the day before had it, as you’d expect.

Already looking forward to Easter Saturday
Jumping the gun a little bit I would’ve thought Bedford, they’ve announced 2 recruits and their captain coming back. Where are the other 40/45 players going to come from if they’ve already resorted to using Joe coming back to the club? Doesn’t look great to me.

Why would Cam Wilson go back?

Let's be positive the season has only just finished and it's probably respectful to other clubs that were still involved .
What is your dislike
