Sad to see Hawthorn and Mitchell put a fine young gentleman like Oscar Allen in such a terrible position.

Totally agree. Hawks just made his season a nightmare now. Oscar Allen is going to face a turbulent season and mixed reception from WC fans, also his lack of form is only going to add to the problem. Don't see him going to Hawks anymore to be honest.

Take a mental health break and come over to sunny QLD Oscar. We'll get you to Byron so Daniher can explain to you all about playing for Lions and enjoying the lifestyle that east coast has to offer.

Maybe it just drops his value over the season?

Maybe it takes the focus off our real target (whether that is Reid, or another KPF at a different club)?

Hawks and Sam are playing the long game.

At the end of the day, this happens all across the industry at every team.

Tom Lynch. Stephen May. Dangerfield. All successful moves that would have been discussed long before trade period.

There is a bit more heat on this one because he is the captain, and the Perth media has only two teams to focus on.

Why would they change when then footy dept and Sam have been saying for literally 3 seasons that they'd love to find someone to partner with Lewis?

If you think Allen being a target means Lewis has been blindsided you're wrong.

who said he been blindsided, conversations between players and clubs happen daily which you and i are not privy to. whos to say the club havent gone to lewis and give him heads up they going after another key forward to partner him or replace him, and he they wont stand in the way if a club like brisbane come along.

Storm in a teacup. I cannot believe the coverage this has received during the week.

It's a complete non story.
So WC position is to add as much fuel and room for commentary by holding a press conference to address it...

You think that if another club captain, say old Crippa, met publicly with another club in rd2 that would be a complete non story?

Of course the media would make it a story
They need 30 dramas a week to fill column space and the 200 hours of tv shows.

But ultimately who gives a ****. He is a free agent. He is probably talking to a bunch of clubs even if just to put pressure on WCE to pay more.

Aker outed himself 20 years ago because he felt Brisbane low-balled him.

Yes. He'd be well within his rights to meet with other clubs, as I am certain he has done over the years.

The media would go bonkers however, whilst simultaneously bemoaning players and clubs not being as open with them as they would like.

Being well within your rights and being a complete non story which afl fans, especially Carlton fans aren’t interested in are two different things

My club of support has nothing to do with it. I literally just told you if Cripps met with other clubs I wouldn’t care. As he likely has done previously, many times.

Your argument about his condition falls away when you consider their will be multiple clubs offering the 6 year deal
specially when you consider Elliot Yeo signed a 3 year deal just last year

I actually dont think you want Allen to leave but want the compo pick it represents
would you feel the same way if the compo pick was pick #15 ?
The length of contract may sound reasonable to you considering he’s getting offers from other Clubs, however that doesn't change the fact that due to Oscar’s injury history the club (WCE) think it’s too risky and don’t want to be caught with their pants down - and if what is being reported is true imo I believe the Club is being more than generous as I understand it’s not the money side of things why Oscar won’t sign - just the length of the contract.

Cripps is contracted for two more years after this but was heading for free agency in 2021 coming off two mediocre years. He re-signed and had a great 2022 and the rest is history but you would have been pretty annoyed after a couple of losses to start 2021 if his focus was on meeting with potential suitors already.

Interesting, if my club captain was publically taking meetings in rd2 with other clubs it’d be of interest to me, especially thinking about list management.

Why would Lewis want to leave Hawthorn now?

Brisbane came knocking last year, ans premiers, and he said no thanks.

We’ve targeted Allen to play with Lewis.

Go watch Chris Scott’s press conference from earlier today if you think Mitchell meeting with Allen is a big deal.

He put a few media types in their place today.

I get that but this conservative approach is contradicted when you look at the Yeo contract and really baffling

WC need Nessy back. What the **** was the point of this. Why can't they just basically ignore the noise and go "Yes, he met with Mitchell, we understand the nature of the industry we work in and he had our blessing. We are very confident of keeping Oscar and he's 100% committed to the club."

It's not like they aren't half pushing him out with that supposed small current contract offer.

Agree with most of this, not with needing Nizzy back though....

We've given him a contract that's well unders, with the expectation he tests his value in free agency, which is his right, and the wheeled him out to apologise for doing just that.

Oscar came across as a chastened boy in that press conference, and it was totally unnecessary. I want Oscar to leave, but couldn't help but feel bad for him for the charade this has become.

The AFL industry and supporter base has a lot of maturing to do when it comes to trades and free agency.

I think this might be true, but it's an indictment on supporters and AFL industry if Oscar gets backlash for this.

We need to grow tf **** up.

I don't like the Yeo contract but he is a heart and soul player and was in AA form when he signed it.
Yeah heart and soul player but Allen is the captain and surely that has as much value as a heart and sould 31 year old that gets a 3 year contract after playing 37 games from 2020-2023

anyway i hope the bloke does what ever is good for him

The difference here is depth.

A few (including me) West Coast supporters have been saying that Oscar can be replaced and we have alot of good young talls.

Anyone who watched us on the weekend would see both Jack Williams and Archer Reid look AFL quality (Reid looks better than that), and we still have Waterman to come back in and Shanahan in the twos.

Meanwhile we have little talent and no depth in our midfield.

Our list is unbalanced in a way that means Yeo is a far more important player than Oscar is, both in short and medium term.

As someone who wanted Oz to leave BEFORE the season started for the compo pick I don't really care if he's talking to other clubs or not. My main gripe is he was talking to an oppo coach in our own backyard, HOURS after a Derby loss that he touched the ball four times, in a time where the younger blokes are looking to him for leadership.

If you wanna talk to Mitchell or Fagan or whoever else during the bye week or a cheeky convo while everyone's in Melbourne then fair enough..but ROUND 3?! Mitchell literally had all off season and pre season to talk to this bloke and he flagrantly and shamelessly chose round 3 to do this? Everyone's got no one to blame but themselves. Zero sympathies.

You are 100% correct

The eagles value the pick more than their captain and want the pick and thats ok m But supporters have no right to cry about him meeting other teams and their coaches. He is effectively being pushed out by the club low balling him
