I've been told the AFL deemed him 'not indigenous enough'...

So the AFL can now decide who is indigenous or not?
I suspected this was the case when they rejected it without providing a reason. If they had a good reason that wasn’t a public relations hot potato then why not say what it is.

If that's not grounds for appeal, I don't know what is...

It flies in the face of all the AFL's 'optics' to make this a reason. So much so, I can scarcely believe it is the case.

The Hawks need to demand a reason for him not being approved. If that is actually it, we need to go bunta.

Hawks need to push for a reason, AFL back down or provide a reason… In which case we doubt there’s a good reason.

Getting response in public and appeal it.

We will be the bridge too far for this policy. The rort that cannot be tolerated.

If I were him (and I really wanted to get to Hawthorn, and who wouldn’t?), I would file a complaint with the AFLPA or whatever organisation represents draftees. It’s not just Hawthorn getting screwed by a rejection, but him as well. How can the AFL possibly have the audacity to claim they can determine that he doesn’t have enough aboriginal blood in his veins to qualify for an NGA?

Not to toot my own horn… Oh, why not? Toot, toot.

They don't need to, he wasn't registered the year he turned 15 so it's up to us to give a reason why he should be an exception to that rule, and it's totally up to AFL discretion.

Had we tried when he was 15 and it got knocked back, then we'd be able to argue that he meets criteria.

But unfortunately it's on us to convince them to permit the late registration.

I have a mate, who’s part of Richmond’s Indigenous development partner - Korin Gamadji, who has told me that he was not able to added because we didn’t do it when he was 16/17.

We aren’t getting him.

I think Hawthorn knows what’s good for them now and the AFL aren’t a fight worth fighting
While he may not come to us as an NGA clearly we want him and he wants to play for Hawthorn so we may draft him anyway, or trade for him at some point.

We could successfully argue we did not register for him as we knew he would not get him after pick 40? Surely ?

The AFL changing the rules so often disadvantaged our ability to truly value our access to him.

How old was he when he embraced his aboriginal heritage? I thought that was a recent development.

If I were him and I wanted to get to Hawthorn, I would still go to the AFLPA.

I think this would be the only way this would get revisited. Ollie should be allowed the same rights as per the other Indigenous boys no matter what percentage Indigenous he is but as for how long he's been in our NGA that is likely where the AFL has / will shut revisiting this. I'm sure the club left no stone unturned and I have no doubt that the AFL will reopen any loopholes once the next draft goes by only for us to miss again on a highly touted youngster.

How do you register someone at as NGA when they were 15 y.o if they only recently found out they are of aboriginal blood?

If HFC can prove it only knew this recently they have cause for exception imo

Yes, but they don't have to be granted that exception. it's a valid reason sure, but the rules don't state conditions under which a player can be granted an exception. AFL can just say that you need to be registered at that age, and no if you qualify at that age too. If you later find out that you meet criteria it's too late.

We could always invoke the Kieren Jack exception clause if it was a late registration issue?

But then again, we aren't AFL charity cases, so It may not fly.

Didn't a recent article suggest we'd been working with him for 12 months?

It might be hard to argue the 'just found out' bit if we've known for 12 months but only just done the paperwork.

Too many unknowns to form a reasonable opinion as to whether we were screwed or we screwed up.

I think there's probably a bit of hubris from our side. Do we even actually run an academy or just fill out a form for eligible players?

Remember last year many of us not knowing if Anderson was actually in the academy? and also Tew Jiath not being added until last minute before the draft, when we'd already drafted his brother through NGA 5 years earlier.

Like currently now, who are the players that turned 15 this year that are in the academy? what about last years?

Why isn't there a list of players registered and then also details about where does our academy operate from? who are the academy coaches? how often are sessions run?

Seems like academy has been getting an invite to train with the club or play a few games at Box Hill like Cody Anderson did.

I’d be interested to know the process and the required commitment. Seems like a no-brainer to me to fill out that form and support any potential eligible kids from the time they turn 15. Obviously not helped by the AFL’s constant rule changes.

Pretty sure that's exactly what it is.

Very sure it's not an actual place with coaches & staff etc.
