Hard to make a definitive call on Hobbs without knowing what options where in front of him. Yes move it on quicker which is an issue with his outside game but the option could have been down the line turnover or a kick down the line the coach does not want. Even worse effort by Shiel to let Kako run forward and make the tackle. Could have put a bit ore pressure on Kako and give Hobbs more time which I suspect Hobbs would have suspected.

Yes agree...You could hear players yelling "You're out you're out", so I don't think this one is on Hobbs. Poor From Shiel to not shepherd or put body into Kako.

Yeah, maybe a bit harsh. Just saying generally he has a bad habit of getting caught with the ball. I like him as a player but needs to be the inside bull quick release player imo, or even used more in the fwd pocket as he is a good mark for his size.
His inside game is okay as far as release goes like most inside mids he gets tackled a lot but that is not the problem area. The issue he has is not in the 5m to the contest area. It is in the 5 to 10 meter area when he sometimes takes too long to make the decision. It has come up a bit because he has had limited time actually playing inside midfield and has pent more time playing half forward flank where the outside game issues get exposed a bit more.

Also .. who at Essendon training in January would have been expecting a forward to not just give up after providing pressure at the first contest, but to actually chase at top speed as the ball gets to the outside

Poor Hobbsy, he’s become too used to Essendon vs Essendon
Certainly would not have expected a quick small forward to tackle him. Our quick small forwards have not been big on tackles. :p

Watching the VFL squad training at the moment. Have to say that although there is only token pressure in the kicking drills I have been impressed by the skill level. Virtually no lazy kicks . Nice crisp passes hitting the targets. I know it is different under pressure but I have seen plenty of training sessions where the ball has been bouncing all over the place due to. Poor skills or lazy execution.

VFL squad looking very fit. They have been running 200’s for 40 minutes now after doing an hour of 3/4 ground ball drills. Nearly all look to be doing it easily.

AFL squad look very lean and fit. No fat club here.

Did not see all the modified group but Cox was one of them. McKay doing running now.

El-Hawli is playing match sim

Tsatas getting plenty of it . Kicking okay so far.

Setterfield good

Shiel doing a lot of good stuff at half back but did have one cross field kick turnover and got run down by Davey . Looks more composed there than Marto.

Peter Wright can not mark.

McGrath & Setterfield were the standouts for me this morning.

Tsatas can find the footy, kicking looks much improved

Reid is a beautiful user of the footy

Hobbs injury didn't look great, heard him with the physios say that ******* hurt.

Marto looks a different player in the midfield, class above and kicked a great goal.

Duursma lively as well

Home from lunch now.

Overall the group looks very fit and lean. Have a few pictures to upload later.

Match sim was a half of starting from different spots on the ground from either stoppage or ball in. Second half was more a normal game.

Can not give a report on everyone. Was not trying to watch them all.

Grey team was the stronger team but as it always has been being in a grey jumper does not automatically make you best 23. A few guys well in contention play in the red side to even things out a bit.

Sam Draper. Looks very fit and if anything a bit lighter. Played first half for the red side. Had a good battle with Bryan. Draper and Bryan swapped at half time. Thought they where pretty even. Goldy did not do any ruck work until the last quarter when Bryan spent time playing forward. Bryan and Sam had a good battle.

Tsatas was good but he had differing levels of opponents. He had a battle against Setterfield but then he easily had the better of Davey and the young blokes at other times. Main thing was his kicking was solid.

Setterfield was really good. Found a lot of the footy for the red side.

McGrath gave a lot of dash from half back and his defense was good.

Hobbs. Playing on the red side he had 6 or 7 possessions early. Very good in close. Unfortunately he rolled an ankle and had to be helped off the ground.

Shiel looked okay at half back. Made a couple of errors including a horrible cross field turnover but in general he was productive. Left the ground with an ankle / achilleas issue. First up I thought he had done a hammy as he pulled up clutching the back of his leg but it was lower down. Hobbled off the field.

Caddy was quiet. In fact it was a quiet day in the air for the KP forwards . Jones moved well and kicked a few goals and took some marks on the lead. He was the pick of them for me. Wright was average. Dropped a few marks. Gerryin did take a couple of marks for the red side.

Roberts had a good second quarter.

Duursma cruised up and down the wing as he does.

Martin played wing midfield. Was okay with a couple of really good moments.

El-Hawli was quiet.

I noticed Unwin do a couple of good things in the midfield.

Davey got some midfield time but struggled a bit there. Played more high half forward. Had maybe 13/14 possessions. Pleasing thing was he had a couple of run down tackles. No escorting blokes. Looks a bit stronger. Still lacks a bit of stamina.

Ridley good.

Kako good. Think he will play round 1.

Prior had a few touches.

Gresham was also good through the midfield and at half forward.

Merrett played mainly half forward with some midfield time. Ran hard as a half forward as he was often at half back and then involved 3 or 4 plays later at half forward.

Baldwin / Hoare did okay for the red defense.

Reid always looks good when he is fit.

Thought Foley looked really good. Used his pace and provided some decent attack for the red side.

Overall the grey side was a little bit better but the red side and the young blokes put in a really good effort and stayed in the battle giving the grey side some trouble at times.

It is clear moving the ball quickly and setting up after the contest is the clear message in the drills and match sim.

Will try and look for a few different guys next week.
