Far too often the umpires are causing huge momentum shifts in games of footy, umpires will always have an impact but they shouldn’t be having that much of an impact imo.

While the free kick count doesn’t look like north coped a raw deal, it was the timing and momentum sapping nature of the calls (or non calls) which have so many north fans (and neutrals) pissed off.

The incorrect Stephenson call happened when we had momentum, and it completely changed the course of the game.

Obviously a lot of decisions in our game are hard to call one way or the other, and sometimes a team can just suffer a string of bad luck that isn't a result of anyone's fault or intention. I think for the most part, that's what happened tonight. We can make jokes about Carlton's mafia money or the AFL trying to armchair ride them into the finals but that's not realistic.

But the one that you absolutely can't make an argument for is the Stevenson "ran too far" decision. The only thing I can possibly conclude is that the umpire either looked away or zoned out, thought to themselves "huh, he's come a long way hasn't he" and then just showed up to make a ruling, hoping no one would notice their absentmindedness. Objectively, badly wrong, and this is a rule where that's quite measurable. He did not run too far, he had run nowhere near as far as a player is allowed to run without bouncing the ball. This isn't like insufficient intent or holding the ball where umpires are expected to make judgement calls about player intention.

There really should be a mechanism in place for someone to pull an umpire up when they make a bad mistake like this and at least mitigate the damage that a call like that can make, which in this case was swinging the momentum when the game was still very much in the balance. The worst part to me is that Jaidyn isn't even allowed to make a bemused gesture without giving away 50.

The far better team on the day won fair and square.

Charlie Curnow has now evolved as a superstar that he gets calls like Lebron James, Mbappe and other international sporting icons (which is how it should be)

Where's the poll option for 'best umpired game I've ever seen'?
Honestly surprised that this is even a thing. Watched the game with my North supporting dad and a couple of neutrals and none of us noticed the umpiring.
A couple of obviously poor calls against North, but Zurhaar should've had a few more high fend off calls against him too.
Might watch it again to see what all the fuss is about.

Clarko's regular morning call to Gil is to ask for 4 more field umpires because 4 just isnt enough to catch things like coathangers and players bouncing the ball while running.

Each side will nominate the umpires to ensure balanced calls.

Though even with 8 umpires they still wont see the 10 or 12 throws Cripps does each game.

Corr on CC is pretty soft. Its the sort that gets payed by an ump looking to pay free kicks. And CC is clearly playing for the frees, along with Hollands, Motlop (I think, awesome dive by whoever but unfortunately for him no obe was close enough for the ump to get away with playing it,) and others.

But the real questions most North people have is wtf is this:

Why was this a free at the most crucial moment in the third?

There are more but the games over. Its done now. Even with our most important KPDs out and the umps playing for the other side it was still really our terrible kicking for goal that cost us the game against the ladder leaders. Considering where we were last year that's a great sign for the future.

See I thought it was 11 steps so clearly thats just not allowed.

A few years ago Burgoyne got pinged after taking 8 steps.

The test will be whether these umpires are in the VFL next week or umpiring Carlton again.

The high fend off that wasn’t paid, that directly resulted in a goal?
If you watch carefully most fends could be paid as high free kicks.

Funniest thing about that decision was how pissed off the umpire was that he couldn't pay a free for dissent.
