CV is currently ripping through WA because they’ve opened the border, hardly a surprise given they have hardly had to actually had to deal with it in the community at any point.

I actually think it makes the North v Eagles game much more interesting and watchable.

Wonder if anyone will bother looking into why we didn't have teams wiped out with positive tests last year.

not much to look into.

even more infectious strain and an acceptance of community transmission, which means community transmission is now totally different to last year where once lockdowns happened, transmission was in essential workplaces and the families of said workers, which doesn't exactly have a cross-over with professional sport.

based on the reports, the non-WA clubs right through the exact same thing when Omicron started, but for them it was in December and January so it didn't matter that much. WC and Freo's inevitable encounter with it got delayed into the actual season.

Beats me.

Wow Rioli got off with that hit on Rowell.
I thought Chris Scott's comments on it have been by far the best (reddit warning), and the difference between the ground contest and marking contest. People are really lousy with comparing incidents in football, which hey happens, but as someone not too much paying attention to this thing, the replays I saw (and again, not paying too much attention to) hadn't made it clear that it was actually a marking contest, which does give it a totally different light. Once I found that out it was like "oh, so he'll get off".

the AFL, as far as I know, haven't changed the written guidelines to go away from the almost protected clause that incidents from marking contests have had, so if that's the way they want to go, they need to actually write it. good luck doing it without opening up a can of worms though

Think the Voss factor played a big part in the Blues win. Brenton Sanderson was talking about game strategy on SEN yesterday and one thing he mentioned was how Carlton had numbers at the contest in round 1 while the Bulldogs have a bit of DNA now as far as being off the contest at the 5m ring. What I noticed the Blues do well was they still had numbers at the contest but it was only 1 or 2 most of the time trying to tackle with others being around 3m off the contest and they chopped the ball of well not allowing the Dogs to feed outside the contest.
They can still look a bit shaky at time but as much as it pains me to say it they have a solid side. 2 very good KP forwards. A very good midfield and a defense with a gun full back.

It works when those ‘gun mids’ have the ability to be dangerous forward or a weapon off half back and not just running around killing time until they get back on the ball. Also wasn’t the story libba played mainly forward as he struggled since contracting covid, so they were easing him back into it.

Do the Dogs midfielders have the ability to be resting forwards though, ala Petracca?

I know Bont has shown the capacity to kick goals, but aren't they just from when he runs forward from the midfield?

Essendon in a similar boats. Enough midfielders, not enough versatile midfielders

Hats off to Vossy.
He's got a good team on paper to be an excellent team on the field.

lovely balance across the lines and reaping some benefits of 3 fit superstars in Cripps, Curnow and McKay.
Walsh with some match fitness and Cerra back is going to make them ominous.

playing top 4 footy as it is.

Doggies...new Crows. they have not handled that GF loss well.

Lets not undersell Carlton have replaced second tier midfielders like Will Setterfield, Matt Kennedy (who yes, are still in the team) to be next tier down due to the inclusions of Cerra & Hewitt.

Genuinely looked good last night. Scary good. It frustrates me that we probably won't see that anytime soon.

People complain when Parish plays forward :p
Right now I would say Parish , Caldwell and McGrath have the scope to kick goals.
Merrett has not really played forward for a long while.
Sheil has had scoring shots when forward but his goal kicking has sucked.

I guess your'e right, the next question is who comes in to that midfield from outside the starters so we don't lose too much.

Hopefully Hobbs starts to get a look in as the year goes on. He will be the short bull in the future in a similar way to a player like Zorko or Neale.
We have a bit of an issue we will most likely not solve short term and that is there is no 90kg bull other than Jake to cause havoc. Perkins has some scope but he is not really a smash in in cause havoc player. He is strong in a contest but it is more evasion rather than brute force. We are sort of stuck with what we have. I know the easy thing is to say trade Sheil as he is the player we could cover but in the cold hard real world that is not going to happen so it will be what it is. We are better than last week. One other thing is although the midfield got pumped in contested we have to remember we had a few skinny blokes playing other spots who also got done over.
Hobbs will be a star. He will be a little 180cm 85kg bulldozer. We just have to find need to find someone to help with Jakes brute force role.

So Danger hardly touched it in the first quarter. Against us he won the game in 1 quarter, damn!!!!
For mine the difference is Sydney have built their DNA over the last 20 years with strong team defense while our DNA in that period has pretty much been to try and run and gun other than a short period where we had a glut of bigger bodied slower midfielders with a few quicker flankers.

Sydney's center bounce set up looks to be a simple one on one hold position rather than anyone looking to get free in a hit zone.

i haven't been kicked off here yet for it, so ill say it again
I like them up and about when we are too.

It's my favourite rivalry.
I like the banter with their fans. their arrogance when they're up is like ours. It smacks of self entitlement and superiority.

I'd love a GF between the two of us.
Yes but it’s terrible when they’re up and we’re not
