MFC Fans Only Non-Demons AFL Discussion – 2024: This year really stinks (but not as much as the Gold Coast rebrand)

Gold Coast have a decent kit, the red and yellow really resonate with those surf flags for me that is great for connection to their location and they have the chance to do something simple but effective with that but for some reason choose not too

That jumper looks disgusting though. They've taken away the yellow which was part of the package and made it bland with no pop. It's just looks like a shithouse training top

The logo as well is atrocious. I liked Adelaide's change if i'm honest. But this is boringly disgusting. It's like a new kid in graphic design combined the G and C and threw an 80s Synthwave aesthetic on it. Like no joke, the folks on the jumpers and graphic design board could have done something better with both the jumper and logo.

Imo the old logo was meh, but still a lot better than this
Feels like just about anything could have been better but the all red kit is as bland as it comes. It's like they wanted to look like Liverpool but there's no pop just a boring monochrome kit. I don't mind the logo but seems pretty dumb to unleash a new logo only for it to be camouflage in the kit. Could have easily done something with the surf flag but I would still ad a touch of blue to break things up a bit.

Honestly if it where me i would advocate to use the surf flag colours in a more old fashioned looking kit and i think it turn out okay. Although that said doing a V would be very close to Brisbane bears like.

Modern designers also need to realise you don't need to have your own logo plastered on your jumper. We know it's you! The dogs (robodog era) took off their logo and it just lets the jumper breath more.

But look at freo since they went the V and removed a lot of clutter. Yes those jumpers look good nostalgically speaking but it's so much more streamlined and identifiable now.

Gold coast could honestly just do a monogram if they want something gold on the front with more dominant red. Since Fitzroy left people seem to think that Carlton just outright own having a monogram on their jumper (that isn't a clash jumper). Their last logo has just been a shitty version of that on the front anyway

It is difficult because traditional guernseys are limited so it's hard to do something that is a bit different. Personally I would use the swim between the flag shape with some light blue but then it looks to close to a bastardised Adelaide kit. At the end of the day you would think they could have come up with something better.

Even with the shitty logo, something like this would have been better:

Or even just make the logo gold:

The one solid yellow line through would have worked great. It'd only really be close to the Dogs jumper setup and they use two colours. Would have also worked to help with that surfing flag aesthetic that as i said ties the club well with its location which is something i think they should be marketing. It really isn't rocket science

The Crows and now Suns embarrassing themselves for no reason whatsoever lol. I'd love to go back to the 80s logo though.
The new Crows logo rules.

Anyway, I hope we one day go back to incorporating the demon in our logo. Our current one is a good corporate/professional comms logo, but it's pretty boring for footy branding/merch IMO.

I don't really know how focus groups work tbh, but surely there's a bit of bias towards filling them with nuffies who have too much time on their hands. I wouldn't trust anyone in a focus group to be representative of the general population

Instead they get this. How on earth this made it out of focus groups, I'll never know.

I remember someone went on the FJGD board to leak that Gold Coast was getting a new logo because they were part of a focus group. I'll look it up, hold on...

Here it is, from May:
I’ll try and put my thoughts into words, sorry if it seems clunky.

So I walked out of the brand refresh feeling really flat.

They showed us 3 designs. Mostly focusing on the logo and putting it in a lineup with all other club logos for comparison.

Logo Design 1.

This was awful, really awful.
But, the guernsey they slapped it on was GREAT.

Red to Yellow gradient. Starting with red at the bottom changing into yellow around the chest and up, with red hems and collars!

The away was yellow and yellow gradient.
(Looked okay nothing great like the yellow training jumper)

The clash was blue and red gradient, looked really good - think phoenix suns but more blue than purple.

Logo Design 2.

This was the best logo that was offered up.

They had placed this on a 2 toned red jumper. Think soccer shirt where it’s red with darker red lines quite busy, I hated it.

And a yellow version - the same.

Logo Design 3.

This logo was also terrible.

On the guernseys they had changed the red and blue shades to almost lions colors. And the logo on this one was really big and quite low on the jumper in a darker shade of the same color of the jumpers.

I have written a lot about the different jumper designs they showed us and honestly if the put logo 2 onto guernsey 1 it would be pretty decent design.

But they didn’t seem to care about the actual guernsey design. Every time I asked about it or gave feed back they tried to put me back into talking about the logo. It seemed like it would be an after thought.

They did concede that they would be going with some type of gradient and all signs pointed to yellow being the away/clash.

Anyone who wants a “traditional” strip will be disappointed.

I should also say he did stress that these designs weren’t anywhere near completion before he showed us, to the point where he almost sounded defensive, almost like he had negative feedback all day.

It is happening. 2025 we will be in a new kit.

Members will be shown in November.

I didn’t end up signing any type of NDA and we didn’t have to give them our phones, just turn them off.

They sit around smoking bongs/hookah til 3AM and then they see pink pachyderms on parade.
