Nah not really, I know deep down it was warranted, but FMD guys like Labo and Khwaja get a gifted run.

Labuschagne is a ridiculous call again. He’s averaged 30+ this series.

Sure that’s a poor series by his standards but I’m reasonably confident there isn’t a specialist top three batter in Australia that’s currently outside the team which is capable of doing that.

So it’s a ridiculous call but you concede he’s been poor and could be replaced if there was a better player out there? Cool logic.

Poor by his standards doesn’t mean droppable. Averaging 30+ is still contributing.

There isn’t a batter in the shield better than him and it isn’t even close. When you’ve got a guy averaging 30 in the series and 47 for his career vs a guy averaging 35 in the shield for his career but averages fifty this season because they’ve played 4-5 games and scored two scores over 50, I know who I’m backing to score runs in the next test match and it’s not the shield player. Form isn’t 4-5 games to get selected - it’s 18+ months and that’s why Beau Webster has been selected.

The selectors have brought in McSweeney and Konstas already who were the only players actually putting their hand up for selection. They’ve both averaged less than Labuschagne is.

Picking another batter ahead of Labuschagne would be like us picking Ollie Murphy because Brennan Cox was showing poor form (options as good as McDonald and Draper don’t exist).

What a series and proof that so long as India, Australia and England exist, test cricket is going nowhere given the insane attendance numbers.

They made the easier "tough" decision to drop Marsh but should have also made the harder call to rest Starc who clearly isn't fit. Webster, Konstas and even McSweeney to an extent prove the next rung are as good or better than our top guys off by 10 or 20%.

As strange as this sounds, I don't think this pitch is as bad as the batting has made out. There's value for shots and it's really the short of a length balls getting the prodigious movement. With Smith looking back to form, even if Bumrah comes back they should back themselves to chase 200. Its not a minefield yet...

Absolutely.
Unlike our batting there’s actually genuine depth in our bowling stocks and the decision not to rest Starc , who despite it being his home test has a poor record in tests at the scg ,is worthy of ridicule, especially in such an important match .

Richardson wouldve been handful for the Indian batsmen on that deck

I was very surprised Richardson was picked in the squad tbh. He hasn’t played many red ball games at all in the last couple of years. IMO he’s good enough but is he ready right now? Not sure he is.

Gotta remember Starc, Hazlewood and Boland are all 34+ this year. Cummins is around 2-3 years behind. There’s a few younger guys with clear talent but none seem to be able to put together a full season of red ball cricket.

Webster is a real talent, a genuine all rounder who bats, bowls and fields very well. Also has shown great composure in a very tight game.

He may be 31 years old but he could have 5 to 6 years of test cricket ahead of him. I feel very comfortable that he will get the job done whenever he is needed.

Tbh Cameron Green is still better at probably every aspect of the game (batting, bowling, fielding) so will be back in.

People might get the vibe that I’m not that impressed by batters in the shield atm so two all rounders because they’re both genuinely in the best six batters in Australia isn’t out of the question imo. Think they’ll be an exodus from the team after Bazball is embarrassed five-nil tbh so if Webster stays around the squad for twelve months I reckon the two all rounders is a chance.

I think two all rounders in Green and Webster could work OK provided Webster's form continues.

At least he has shown he has the temperament and technique to help anchor the middle order for the next few years while new batsmen are blooded into the top order.

They could have replaced Starc with the short turnaround between Melbourne and Sydney, but he bowled well on Friday. After bowling 18 overs on the first day and helping knock the opposition out, you don't expect to have to back up again with the new ball after tea on the 2nd day.

Because India's run rate was so slow in the first innings, we were in the prime position to bat them out of the game if the batsmen could occupy the crease for 4-5 sessions with the 5th day almost certainly looking like a washout. Now this game is likely to be over in 3 days.

We really took our foot off the neck.
Piss poor effort by all except the new guy.

Here’s my wild prediction for today, the Indians bat on to get just over 200, we are batting by lunch, top order fails again, middle order plus one bowler make the chase somewhat interesting (probs Cummo), Cummo gets out, remaining bowlers go cheaply and the series is drawn, so India retain without even needing Bumrah.

Pretty good chance you'll be on the money. We need a 50 from at least one of the top 5 if we're chasing anything over 200.
