Have you seen anywhere if he supports us?
He said Stkilda and Adelaide but said you kinda have to support Adelaide when they do all this stuff for you like invite you to pre season and run extra training sessions for him. So doesn't give off boyhood dream to follow in Dad's steps

Not really surprising considering Mark was retired before he was born and doesn't seem he's ever lived in Adelaide.

Saints and the Crows

PRESEASON Q&A

Q: Mitch, can you give us a rundown into your footy journey and how you got started?

MS:
I wasn’t allowed to play early on because Dad didn’t let me, but I started at Heyfield in Under 10s I think. Won a flag in Under 12s, Covid happened and then I did my knee, which was a bit unfortunate. Now I’m playing for [Gippsland] Power and loving it.

Q: How much influence has your Dad had on your career?

MS:
A fair bit. Always having chats after the game to see how I can improve, kicking with me, seeing what I can do different to improve myself. So, heaps.

Q: Have you watched many of his highlights?

MS:
There’s not too many of them, but I try to watch a couple of replays of games just to see how he goes.

Q: Are you an Adelaide fan?

MS: Adelaide and Saints. After all the things the Crows do for you, I guess you have to go for them.

Q: How has your preseason been?

MS:
I’ve only had a couple of full preseasons, so this one’s been pretty full on and I’ve loved it.

Q: What about your experience in the Vic Country hub?

MS:
That was amazing. Getting to know all the Vic Country boys, elite coaching and just a very good environment to improve.

Q: How would you describe yourself as a player?

MS:
Versatile [and] hard at it.

Q: What are some of your strengths?

MS: My speed. I like to burst away from the stoppages or just off my opponent. My kicking, and just versatility to play on anyone, any size.

Q: Are there any improvements you’re looking to make?

MS:
Probably just getting my hands on the footy more and being more of a leader out on the field.

Q: Which player do you try and mould your game on?

MS: Probably Will Day at the minute, or Max Michalanney. I watch his game fairly heavily and like the way he plays.

Q: What role do you expect to play this year?

MS:
Mainly off the half-back due to last year, but hopefully I’ll move into the midfield this year. Maybe even the forwardline.

Q: Have you set any goals for the year?

MS: Getting drafted is the main one, but there’s little ones before that like making Vic Country and getting in the leadership group.

Q: Which teammate should we look out for to have a big season?

I dont think there's any doubt both Mitch and his brother Will be Crows draftees if they're good enough, given they've attended the Crows Academy every scholl holidays etc from very early on.

They could be just taking advantage of something that isn't available to most kids.

There's nothing wrong with that btw.

Ok, with all the talk about Dougie Cochran wanting his newly learnt indigenous heritage to make him eligible for Ports NGA, how does that work when he is a Centrals player and therefore aligned to the Crows?
From the sounds of things Port District is his junior club which is in WWT zone which is Port's Zone he plays for Centrals due to his father playing for Centrals, he has been playing in Adelaide's NGA side in Under age match ups due to centrals being one of Adelaide's NGA zones.

All we know is it's very messy and a lot of rules would need to change in order for him to be draft eligible. Nobody knows exactly what the deal is and it's in the AFL's hands to decide who's academy he's in, provided they accept his indigenous heritage and on top of that if they allow Metro SA players to be draft eligible

The bottom line is he should be in the open draft and only available to the Crows or Powa if they have the pick to secure him...it's that simple.

This late to party by Powa is a joke.

Was annoying at first hearing about this. Really though, the AFL make up the rules and the Power are going to need draft assistance soon considering their list (Butters is showing how big a loss he will be), so it's inevitable.

We got Max when his dad never played for us, so meh.

Isn't the difference we got Max under a draft rule that had been in place for decades, for Cochrane to get to Powa means changing the rules because a couple of years ago he started to show up on AFL clubs radars as a talent.

Just how far back does the indigenous rule go back. When you require an ancestry search to get a player eligible, something is wrong with the system. Why doesn't it apply to other cultures?

Needs a "Rucci" style investigation.

Like Egyptian ancestry? 😃

You don't change the rules for one bizarre exception.
Sort of agree but I don't like the NGA process to start with. If a player is good enough, he will get picked up anyhow. The AFL drafts are already compromised beyond what they were meant to be. The Sydney and Brisbane clubs get benefits that others don't get. Surely there is a panel the AFL have that look at each NGA nominee for eligibly and make a commonsense decision.

This whole argument shows what a joke the system is. The only possible justification for club getting priority access to a player (ignoring father sons) is that they played a big part in their development.

Here, if anyone played a part in his development, it’s us. Not Port. And even our part seems pretty small.

But of course, clubs really just want freebies, and so all this effort goes into massaging the system to get valuable freebies.

The system is a joke and needs to be burned down.

Start a new comp with Norwood in it

Would he still be on an AFL list if we didn't get him for free in the rookie draft?
Would he EVER have been on an AFL list if we didn't exercise our right to take him as a rookie?

My guess is no he'd have been playing SANFL for Sturt.

Didn't PA put up some sort of objection at the time based on his father's record at the club?

Don't think so, and if so why didn't they just draft him in the 2020 National Draft when he was available then we don't get to pick him as a category B rookie?
