NFL New to NFL - Looking for a Team to Follow

Haha, cheers mate. I'm heading to the states at the end of the year, so I figured I better pick a team to follow. I picked it solely on the culture of the city, not how well the team has been doing.

That and I've got a friend from America that would have killed me if I went for the Pats or the Packers :D

Hey guys, always liked the concept of American Football a lot more than our own rugby etc... but have never really followed a season/team that closely. Fortunately enough however, I found myself on a cruise near L.A. for the superbowl last year. Gotta say, a bar packed with thousands of NFL lovers has got me very keen for this season. Was supporting the Packers on the day last year, and what a cracker of a match it was. I'm therefore tempted to barrack for the Packers, although I understand that could be seen a bit as bandwagon-ing. Also considered the Bears as I'm in general a Chicago fan, but after making it to the final 4 last season, I see that they are given absolutely no chance this year for some reason.

Anyway, looking for a team that's fairly strong, will be a chance to win it this year, but is possibly not considered jumping on the bandwagon. Any suggestions?

Cheers in advance:thumbsu:

Well Cleveland fits one of those conditions...

None cover all 3.

Eagles are 100% certainties to win it right now , and you'd be a bandwagoner if you join them.

May as well go Detroit. Great young team, pre-eminent bandwagon ;)

Of the current Super Bowl favourites, I could possible suggest the bolded teams if you dont want to look too much like a bandwagoner. The ones in italics are def bandwagon teams right now imo:

NFC
Packers
Saints
Eagles
Falcons
Bears
Lions

AFC
Patriots
Steelers
Ravens
Chargers
Texans

Jets

Hi, I am fairly new to NFL. I really go into it last year, as One HD was showing games. I also purchased Madden NFL 11 (and now Madden NFL 12) :)

The team I really liked last year after seeing highlights was the Texans. This year I am following them a lot more closely and after if'ing and ahh'ing have decided the Texans will be my team of choice.

Here's hoping for a successful season!!

What's the rush??

I suggest you embrace the game first (making it almost a passion following), by appreciating the machinations of the game and then develop a liking for certain game styles / players. Took me 5-6 years to truly come to embrace my team (over 20 years ago) and that's after watching a limited select of teams in the 80's which were the same teams week in week out.

Shouldn't take as long to embrace a team/ players/ team style with the extensive access to NFL footage nowadays. I can assure you that if you do choose a Packers, Jets, Falcons, whatever team, that bragging rights are about what you know/ live to see, not the glory of times you never tasted. :)

In saying that, I'm glad you enjoyed the Super Bowl festivities last year. Hopefully it'll be HIGH on 'must take day-off for' list.

hey i started watching nfl in 08-09 season i enjoyed it so one day i turned on a game and chose the team i liked the look of that day.

this si probably the wrong place to ask but i figure it maybe the best. The team i chose was the vikings.

it is becoming apparent they are the team that gets picked on in nfl.

im not very clear on the turn around of teams either. how long doe sit usually take to go from crap to competitive?

2-3 years.

But the Vikings arn't crap, 4 1 score games last year. Could very well of gone 10-6 and made the playoffs

And you've been unlucky this year. 54-10 in 3 1st halfs, and only just fell short each time (7, 4 and 3 points)
Could very well of gone 3-0 rather than 0-3

yea just watched the torrent for the bucs game, but cant find one for the lions game.

and what do you mean by 4 1 score games?

had a passing interest in the NFL over the last couple of years, but really took to it last season. Always liked the falcons (not a great start this year) and have just come back from a holiday in chicago. Went and saw the bears vs falcons, and i must admit i got swept up in bear love in the windy city. So i will follow both teams with interest. From the falcons i am a big fan of ryan, jones, white and turner (ofcourse!)...the bears, i cant go past forte and hester as well as peppers. I feel a bit weird identifying with two teams, as i dont with any other sport. Maybe over the years one of these teams will dwindle away.
Considering getting the foxtel sports package....hows the nfl coverage? My set top box died so its either free to air again (buy a new box) or foxy. Is it worth it? Cheers :)

Over the last few years I have started to follow the NFL after not paying any attention to it. But this lead to a problem... who the hell do I go for? Without having any connection to any of the teams/cities.

When I used to look at the NFL I was a Cowboys fan, only because I knew 2 players in the NFL, Troy Aikman and Emmit Smith. Oh and my mum bought me Cowboys hats and tshirts for some unexplained reason.

But I think its time to pick a team... any help guys?

Not an option: New York Giants, New York Jets, San Diego Chargers, Pitssburgh Steelers.

West coast = West coast
Liverpool = hsitorical powerhouse
LA Clippers = laughing stock.

Easy, Oakland Raiders.

Not an option because you dislike them? If so, you'll love hating them even more following one team I could name. Even better when your record against such teams is currently 2-0 with the other two PIT NYG in the next two weeks... mwhahahaha! anyway dont rush to pick a team take as long as it takes and enjoy the games in the meantime

Been trying to narrow down a team for the last three weeks...

I'm strongly leaning towards the Ravens, have watched 2 of their games, including the dud one they played last Monday, was already getting a bit emotionally involved, haha.

Like the Italian connection too with Flacco.

Other options I'm looking at are Panthers (Nothing like a flashy rookie quarterback to attract a newbie), Chargers and Cardinals.

If you were upset by the game we put up last MNF, then I think that suggests that you've subconsciously picked your team already ;)

It depends on what you want out of your team and what you like to watch.
- Elite defense and good running game? Then go with the Ravens. It helps that they are consistently one of the best run teams so they will rarely be completely crap. However be prepared to see more crap games whenever we play MNF

- A young QB to get behind? Panthers would be your team but dont expect them to be contenders for a couple of years until they sort out their defense and WRs (outside Smiff). Also, not the best run team.

- Exciting offense and pretty good defence? Thats the Chargers, but they have a recent history of not doing well in the POs and are pretty poorly coached. AJ Smith (the GM) doesnt endear himself either

- Can't say too much about the Cards except for they have a few exciting pieces - Larry Fitzgerald (top 3 WR), Patrick Peterson, Daryl Washington, Darnell Dockett and Calais Campbell. They should have a good defense in a year or so with the players they have and a good DC but they look to be stuck with a dud for a QB for a few years yet
