New AFL Video Game - Wii - Q&A Thread

That review seems pretty nice. I'd like to hear more about this game, as I'm quite interested in how good it is (even though I don't have a wii etc.)

I doubt people who like sim games were the target audience, so its likely that many people on this forum will be disappointed greatly, especially if they are buying the game due to the career mode etc. Hopefully someone can give us some better insight into how the game works than has been given so far.

You have to remember that the site is called Aussie Nintendo and only reviews Nintendo games - I'd take that comment with a pinch (or 2) of salt until after a few multi-platform sites have reviewed it

I bought it, played a match and will be returning it tomorrow. I love AFL live and wanted to love this but the gameplay is shocking. It just doesn't flow. It has great features in the Career Manager but not enough to warrant me keeping it. One thing I do love is the handballing. Better than live. The graphics are ok. But yeah, just don't like it.

I personally enjoyed the game when I first played it, but I can't take a mark to save myself, and I have more tackles than disposals!! Still, I think after I get used to the controls, as a Wiimote is a new way of playing AFL games, everything will get easier and smoother and it'll be better. Don't write it off early or you know you'll regret it.

i didn't think it was possible to make a game this bad. terrible terrible terrible. everthing about it sucks. i've given it a good 5+ hours of play time, tried to like it, but just can't do it. the gameplay is dreadful. i can't believe anyone would actually be satisfied enough to put out a game as horrible as this. avoid!!

but it is clear you prefer a FIFA style of gameplay which is what AFL Live went for where as this title is to be more arcadey.

the game play in this game is so far from being "arcadey", it's not funny.

I'm sure it couldn't be as bad as AFL 2005.

If people don't like it at least expand on what you don't like rather than just saying it's bad.

Got this late last week but didnt try it out till this morning (havent played PS3/Xbox game so cant compare). Marking is pretty hard, kicking is hard to be accurate and im struggling to tell teams apart when trying to spot guys further up the field, will fiddle with settings but Fifa has similar problems on Wii. The controls are nothing like any other game ive played so the comments in here about playing twice and saying negative things i dont really follow, would expect it will take a while to get the hang of.

Wanted to use a control pad to see if it was easier but i cant get my Goldeneye one to work with this, anyone else having the same problem? According to the guy in the store and the cover its supposed to be compatible.

The career mode looks real good, real good.......if only they could merge the games together, take the gameplay and graphics from PS3 and Xbox, and the career mode and cool features like 70 teams to choose from the Wii

stupid question but I only just got the game yesterday yet cannot find GWS Giants anywhere in the game I was hoping to have a kick around with them where are they?

I have had no dramas using the traditional gamecube controllers, and they go for cheap now when you can find them second hand, not sure why that was happening though....

The goldeneye controller is a classic controller, not a gamecube one, which isn't supported by the game.


Anyway. I was really underwhelmed by this game at first but I'm really enjoying it now. Took a while to find the best way to play it. My current settings:

Minigames - Turn them off unless you're playing with friends.

Controller - I tried the wiimote and nunchuck but I find the motion gestures a bit frustrating at times. Have switched to the gamecube controller and loving it. The analog stick seems to be better here as well and the set out of buttons is good.

Camera - Probably one of the most important settings. Change it to 'Behind' and Close. Make a world of difference. Graphics seem nicer, you get a good view of the field, feels more 'real' and makes it very immersive. Also good for kicks on goal. I instinctively played on the 'Side' view at first because that fits with how I would play sports games typically, like FIFA or NRL. But it's hard to see where to kick it when you're on this view and it doesn't look as good.

Mode - Definately play the career mode.

Difficulty - Hard. Once you've got the hang of the controls (using the gamecube controller helps) then hard mode is great and plays quicker.

Menus/Interface - I don't think this has been mentioned by anyone yet, but the general presentation is very good. The menus are really slick and crisp, especially for a wii game. Everything is intuitive and looks great. I love how the club songs play when you get a win.

Graphics - Probably the reason for the negative comments. They seem bad at first but with the right camera settings I found I don't even notice anymore.

Team - Play as the Suns, obviously!



All in all, there's a lot of fun to be had with this just tweak things around to your satisfaction. It's a bit silly to say you're returning it after playing one game etc.

I'm thinking there's a fair amount of "I suck at this game, therefore it is shit" going on in here. Haven't played the game yet, but that's the vibe I'm getting (especially considering most of the official reviews are saying it's decent enough).

JB Hi Fi had an awesome preorder deal, they were giving away a free gamecube controller with every preorder sold. I wish I took that up but after much hesitation I never did. Cash coverters is your best friend for getting one of the gamecube controllers though. Try there or ebay.
