Nathan Ablett retires

Never really had his heart in it.

Well, in saying that. He did give it a red hot go for the club he loves when he got there. But it took a shite load of convincing to even get him to apply for the F/S rule.

Sad story, but also a happy story. Here's a kid who has decided there is more to life then football. Maybe a lesson he learnt from his dad.

Very selfish young man. Geelong invested 3 or 4 years of development on him, for him just to throw it back in their face

And it's also selfish, because so many kids try there heart out just to be Rookie listed at least, and this bloke gets a free-ride through the draft as a father-son, and then decides he's had enough. WEAK

Extremely selfish thing to do, Geelong will be disappointed but have the right to be angry.

Why is that?,he's achieved his goals and helped geelong to a premiership. He
probably doesn't want to end like his dad has depressed after his football career ended.Good on him I say.

Agreed.

In response to the poster above who quoted me. These are the reasons as to why I said it. ^^^

Well boo, hoo, 3 years of development.

This is the kids life, and his choice, and it's idiots that post things like that that get under my nerves.

Settle everyone. Lets not let the truth get in the way of a good story.

The GFC website states that he has requested and been granted 'time off' during the early part of the pre-season to cope with the pressure and expectation. End of story. Very tabloid like to say anything else.

If it is true, it is an amazing story. However, I could see him coming back in the future.

Either that or he really doesn't enjoy footy at all and he achieved a premiership, so he has the medal he wanted.

Selfish and angry??? Not at all. Disappointed to not see him grow as a footballer IF he decides to not play at all but as a geelong supporter i wish him all the best. It's his life and his future.

I don't think he's retireing just yet, but will we see him in 2008? I don't think so.

Hawkins, we need you.

Have to wonder whether his heart was really in it and whether another player was far more deserving (Blake) of a premiership medallion.

That's a tad harsh, if he was so reluctant to actually play in the 1st place, then I think it was very unselfish of him to devot 4 years of his time to the club when he didn't truly want to be there.

Why is he selfish for leaving?

If he doesn't want to play then he is entitled not too. It would be more dishonest to continue to take a pay cheque if he wasn't willing to give 100%.

He has always been a reluctant footballer, and if his surname wasn't Ablett I think Geelong wouldn't have been so determined to persuade him to play football.

Let him have a year off away from the fishbowl that is AFL and who knows it might decide he misses it more tha he thought.

Don't shoot the guy down just because he has other interests.

How would you know what he is going through off the field?

I don't know if this is correct, because the GFC site is saying he is just taking time off. Let's hope so anyway

Amazing decision that. So many kids would "kill" for an AFL career, yet Nathan can just walk away at 21.
Shows the kids has guts, to front to the fact that he doesn't feel right doing what he's doing, and wants to walk away.

Whatever. If your post isn't attended to be an attention seeking troll then you have no idea.

Firstly, Geelong practically forced him to play AFL after he originally rejected. He's a very shy man and Cook is very persuasive and probably gave in, rather than deciding to become an AFL footbller.

Secondly, there is far more to life than AFL footy, and his heart never seemed to totally in it considering his body language.

Thirdly, its his life and like any job you have to look after yourself first. If that is selfish then its for the best, he shouldn't do it just because he feels he has to. If anything that is inconsiderate from Geelong to force him to do something that he really didn't want to, just to gain benefits from him. Not having a crack at Geelong here cat fans, but just sticking up for Nathan.

Good on him, and good luck to him.

Can't believe up to post #28 and not a comment from a Cats fan?

What do they think about this?

Must have missed me on page 2 matey :thumbsu:

Personally, whatever makes him happy. I never thought he looked like he wanted to be there. Slot in the Tommohawk for him.

I doubt he's sick of football.

More likely he's sick of the commitment required and unlike most others doesn't crave fame and fortune.

Ballsy call if this is true. If it's his decision and he's made it for the right reasons, then I can't see why you wouldn't respect his decision.

Exactly, its not as if Geelong didn't know the risks concerned, and they were the one who wanted Nathan to join, not the other way around, he owes them nothing.
