Mitchell Johnson to announce retirement

That 13/14 season was arguably the best performance by a fast bowler in modern times.

37 wickets at 14.

Peaks were incredibly high. Loved watching it.

59 at 15. Don't forget the Saffers

As someone who goes to the WACA test every year, many of my favourite cricket memories involved watching Johnson live. Watching his spell on day 2 against the Saffers in the 2008/09 series from the east bank is one of my most memorable cricketing memories.

I'll miss Johnson but I also think it's a well timed retirement.

Hopefully he sticks around and plays some cricket for WA

just one of those periods where great bowlers are simply unstoppable

I'm glad he managed to turn his career around and is going out in front of a world audience who now respect him (compared to Shane Watson..).

Those spells in Perth, South Africa and in the last home Ashes are the kinds of things you'll be telling your grandkids about.

A more brutal and frightening series from a bowler you would struggle to see, than Johnson's 2013-14 Ashes.

Always reckon he underachieved with the bat a bit. At his best he was a beautiful stroke maker with a very pure technique- how good was his straight and off driving!

Well done, Mitch.

At least he was able to go out on his terms, just a shame the WACA decided to produce the flattest road in history to celebrate his last game. Would have been better for a fast paced 90's style WACA wicket

Champion bowler, champion bloke.

He was one of Australia's most feared fast bowlers when in form and the amount of wickets he has taken shows the quality bowler he was.

Johnson's retirement does not surprise me though when you look at his bowling figures from the first innings. He has lost his ability to bowl at 150 km/h regularly and I am glad he didn't go on any longer because it would not have been pretty for him.

Well done Mitch on a fantastic career and I hope at least he plays for Western Australia this season.

Strikes me as a very sensitive bloke beneath his exterior; someone who has had to battle against himself more than anyone else. A well earned retirement, well played Mitch.

very very good bowler when in form and good fun to watch.
I'm just wondering how much the Phil Hughes incident impacted on him. He just doesn't seem to be as hostile since then.
Maybe its just the timing of him getting older, but I don't think he's bowled anywhere near the same amount of short balls as he did in the last home ashes series.

He definitely didn't bowl as many short balls.

A bit like Clarke i don't think he really got over the Hughes incident. Wasn't the same after it happened.

Can't find footage on youtube but one of my favourite spells of his was against South Africa in Durban 2009. Removed McKenzie and Amla first over for ducks, broke Graeme Smith's hand (for the second time) and caused Kallis to retire hurt too. Maybe not statistically his best but definitely one of the most memorable for me.

I remember that spell well. It was brutal. He had Kallis spitting blood out on the pitch that day.

It'll be this spell. It is poor quality footage though.

Rated his batting more than his bowling, he had too many patches of inconsistency with the ball to be a true great (despite being 4th on the all time list).
