the Dees fan to border collie ratio seems high. We seem to be consistent in making good decisions.
High on St Bernards too if I recall - more than one.

Im still waiting for ThePuppetMaster to post a picture of his Vizsla because they are my very favourite dogs

Ah. Right. Sorry. Sort of the dry land version of massive dogs.

Does he need to get shaved in Australian summer? Those snow dogs have really thick coats

Common mistake, amount of people who have shouted "Beethoven!" when they see my dog is ridiculous.

My understanding is that shaving dogs with thick coats is a big no no. Generally on hot days I just take him to the beach and he'll jump in the water to cool off. Then at home just have the aircon on. Generally he's fine until you get to temperatures in the high 20's

Pile snow on him I reckon. He should love it

Yeah I really want to live the stereotype and get him up to the snow at some point. He'd be in heaven, would probably just eat it though.

My mother had a Newfoundland when I was little. Had webbed feet and all which was cool. She also gave us the opportunity to perform a hard trial on vacuum cleaners. Hoover brands were favoured. Those double coat dogs shed like nothing else. I swear we could have knitted together a whole new dog each week from leftover fur in her basket

Oh the fur is a killer but only really bad when he gets a new coat in, which happens seasonally. You get carpet for a week

Yeah like Bluelegs said they’re typically not clipped. They have a double coat which helps them regulate their temp. Ours spends most of summer inside of the aircon is on. Thrives in winter. We get pretty mad frosts here. Can be -4 and he’ll sleep on the grass rather than on his bed

yeah I thought their coat works as insulation and they have something like 3 or 4 coats or some shit some lady was telling me down the park with her bear sized German Shepard. I've never seen 1 the size of the bloody thing. but yeah never shave your dog it ****s with them growing back the coats they need

BC”s, legend!

Best dog.
they really are the best. took me forever to get her the chase the ball all she wanted to do was chase the dog chasing the ball now all her pup wants to do is chase her chasing the ball. still didn't get her to bring it back she just drops it and gets in position to chase it again. not let up in the bitch she comes to work with me every day runs around jumping in puddles and shit then still wants to go to the beach or the park after work. don't know what I'd do if I didn't take her to work with me everyday

Lol, sounds exactly like my boy, if there is another dog there he herds it instead of chasing the ball. When it's just him he'll chase the ball though but prefers the frisbee. When I go to my brothers who has two heelers he plays with them both at once till one goes to sleep. Then plays with the other till it goes to sleep then wakes the other to play and eventually all three are playing again. He never stops, even today he had two walks and over an hour play in the back yard along with heaps of training (mental stimulation is supposed to tire them out more than exercise and he's still wants to keep going).

Going to try some new commands and tricks now as I think reinforcing the ones he knows is too easy now.

To you and all the other BC owners here What was your dog like during teething and up until about a year? Dory_77 Fitzey

does your makes the frustrated squeals when chasing the other dogs it's cute as.
you mean like chewing and shit? the mum chewed a few shoes and shit up but she's pretty smart I'd tell her off she'd get the hint and just kept giving her shit to chew on but she was on-site with me from her needle so was constantly with me besides when I was sleeping and that's when she'd do the damage. the son chewed ****ing everything. doors, skirting, shoes, toys and for some reason the big ass electrical cord running into the aircon he got absolutely booted by that it blew the hair off his back leg still can't grow hair there. he's not as smart as mum so when I got it fixed he did it again even though I fenced it off.

you mean like chewing and sh*t? the mum chewed a few shoes and sh*t up but she's pretty smart I'd tell her off she'd get the hint and just kept giving her sh*t to chew on but she was on-site with me from her needle so was constantly with me besides when I was sleeping and that's when she'd do the damage. the son chewed ******* everything. doors, skirting, shoes, toys and for some reason the big ass electrical cord running into the aircon he got absolutely booted by that it blew the hair off his back leg still can't grow hair there. he's not as smart as mum so when I got it fixed he did it again even though I fenced it off.
Chewing mostly not an issue except he wants to attack his inside bed and I don't allow it so it's a constant back and forth. He has recently dug a couple of holes but the last one we made a big fuss about until he got the point and when I went to fix the hole and said to him what's this?' he'd get sheepish. I'm more talking about testing boundaries and ignoring commands which he didn't only a few weeks ago. Also, he always wants to punch on and can sleep like a baby outside but as soon as he comes in wont settle.

It's been 25 years since my last pup and last training a dog so can't remember how it went, I only remember the result which was a sensational dog. He was also a BC too but I used negative reinforcement to train him and now I'm trying to go positive reinforcement and am starting to wonder if I've become too PC with it.

My BC is about 10 months old now, he’s been fairly good. Has grown so quick so it’s hard to look at him like he’s still a puppy haha. Gets a long walk/run every day which is needed because we only have a small yard and that usually tires him down for the evening. 👍🏻

We're the 2nd home for my BC, came to us a bit over a year old. Hadn't had great dog socialisation it seemed and was overweight and v lazy for a BC.
We've worked hard with his dog socialisation and he's usually good but once in a while will absolutely go beserk at another dog. No real pattern to it. We've gotten him a lot fitter too, but he's still pretty lazy for a BC I feel. Gets about 90m of walks with us a day, plus some playtime at home, but sleeps heaps too. Can recommend those snooza beds (they're a Dees sponsor now, think they do a discount for members). He chewed the stuffing out of his old beds but really loves it. Bit exy but really good and seems a lot more relaxed in it

Training wise we aren't super strict. Have had some issues when we first got him with shoes/clothes getting chewed but learnt pretty quick that's not on. When shoes were on the rack by the door he doesn't touch them. Mostly chewed my old joggers anyway so no great loss.

We give him plenty of toys and use cardboard boxes (cereal and muesli bar boxes are great) to make little treat boxes he can shred. Stuff some newspaper and treats in there and it keeps him entertained briefly while letting him destroy something we don't care about.
