Metallica Compilation

There seems to have been a lot of talk about metallica on here lately. Now I've never actually got into them but I've obviously heard great things.
Can someone give a list of good metallica songs that I could burn onto a CD and get a good taste of what they are like.

Master of Puppets
Ride the Lightning
Jump in the Fire
Call of Ktulu
The 4 Horsemen
Creeping Death
Fade to Black
Sanitarium
The Thing that Should not Be
One

That should just about see it out....
 
I'll preface this by saying i was a Metallica fan long before the Black Album and at the time of its release was as bemused and disillusioned as the next Metallica fan...

But do you guys honestly think that nothing off the Black album deserves to be included in something like this?

Is it a matter of The Black Album simply not being a good album in your opinions, or is more that it is just not a good Metallica album when compared to what came before it?

I guess hind site (namely, the crap they've released since) puts it in a different perspective for me. I was listening to it not long ago and IMO for what it was, i thought it was very well executed on every level and features some bloody strong moments.

Takes more than moments and good execution to make a great album. To me, it's where they lost their fire, intensity and balls. They got rich, which is where SO many bands lose it....
 
I dont disagree with any of that and fwiw didnt really say it was a great album.

I do think as a hard rock album it stacks up pretty well to anything around that time, but that is where the grey area appears in that Metallica were never meant to be a hard rock band before it.

But if you isolate certain songs (which is essentially what a compilation is) do you not think anything off it deserves a guernsey?
 
That's the entire point. They're supposed to be Metallica, not Rocktallica.

If the compilation was really long, I may have my arm twisted to near breaking point to possibly include 'Wherever I May Roam'.

If I was in a good mood.

And the planets were aligned that day.

And.....

I still think Sad But True is a f*cking good tune and as heavy as any of their slower moments from years before. That guitar sound is thick as.

And i reckon The God That Failed is another that didnt suck. Features some of Lars' best playing... which i guess is kinda trying to find good players from Carlton's 2006 season.

True. SBT is a good tune. Forgot about that. (but what does that tell you?)
 
By the way here's the mix of metallica that I'd give to my dad to try and make him like it ..which of course would still fail, Roddy's list is the hardcore

BUT, I must add, that it all depends on what type of Metallica you like.

They went through about 4 different stages, and maybe a 5th on this new album. If you are a fan of Thrash, check out Master of Puppets, Ride the Lightning. Justice for All and Kill em All.

If you are Hard Rock fan, probably The Black Album s the way to go, or Load and Reload.

If you are a punk/metal fan, check out Garage Inc.

If you are a Nu metal/thrash metal fan, check out St Anger ;)

If you're looking at full albums, I think the Lightning/Puppets/Justice era is the best (by a mile IMO), Kill Em All overall doesn't quite get up to those three for me, and the black album I quite enjoyed (though it is different, and I missed the old Metallica), but after that I only really liked the couple of songs from Load and Reload I listed. St Anger though, that's a bit harder to find a standout :p (the production doesn't help). Garage Inc is a great album too - but being all covers, either new, b-sides or old eps, it might be one for people who are already fans maybe?

Easiest way: Get a DVD and just put it all on there.

I ain't a big fan of Load, ReLoad and St. Anger and only like some songs off the Black Album but heck I'd just put it all on so I had choice ;)

If I had to make a CD of say 10 songs max.....

1. Hit The Lights
2. Battery (S&M version to have a taste from what I think is a great concept and album)
3. Four Horsemen
4. Master Of Puppets
5. To Live Is To Die
6. Nothing Else Matters
7. Sanatarium
8. One
9. Blackened
10. Fade To Black
