The AFL's best midfields in 2016: Where does your team rank?

13. Brisbane Lions
Best starting midfield:
C: Daniel Rich, Dayne Beams, Dayne Zorko
Foll: Stefan Martin, Tom Rockliff, Ryan Bastinac

Depth players: Mitch Robinson, Allen Christensen, Tom Bell, Sam Mayes, Claye Beams, Lewy Taylor, Nick Robertson, Ryan Lester, Jarrad Jansen, Ben Keays, Rhys Mathieson, Cian Hanley*, Billy Evans*, Trent West, Archie Smith*

The Lions' starting midfield is strong with Dayne Beams, Rockliff and ruckman Martin all A-graders, but it falls away from there. They were in the bottom half of the competition for clearances (11th) and scores from clearances (13th) last season, something recruits Bastinac and Bell should help address in 2016, while draftees Keays and Mathieson are both highly promising ball-winners. The Lions did well in October's trade period to cover the loss of Jack Redden (West Coast) and James Aish (Collingwood). – NE

What, is Pearce Hanley suddenly not a Midfielder?
Exactly... "The Lions' starting midfield is strong with Dayne Beams, Rockliff and ruckman Martin all A-graders, but it falls away from there." I thought the part in bold in particular was somewhat harsh and uneducated. Even disregarding Hanley, to say our midfield falls away after Martin, Rocky and DBeams when we have players like Zorko, Rich, Bundy and Robbo running around is simply ignorant not to mention the acquisitions of Bastinac and Bell. I don't necessarily disagree with the ranking but I thought the accompanying comments could have been more along the lines of "The Lions have a talented midfield on paper, however, due to injury and poor form they struggled to play at their best in season 2015. They do, however, have the potential on paper to move up this ranking in season 2016 if their players can keep fit and gel together." I feel like this would have been a more accurate reflection on where our midfield is currently at as opposed to "We haven't ranked them in the bottom 5 due to the fact that they have 3 A graders but we didn't consider putting them any higher because their midfield falls away from there."

Don't expect any journos to provide decent commentary on us. Quite simply they love to focus on player retention issues and love to throw in the basket case line.

We have a much better imformation an understanding most journos when it comes to us, especially Melbourne journos.

They really don't have a clue and more than not will always have the Ferrals in the 8 regardless.

Had a really solid discussion on NYE on how bad our sporting experts / journos are; compared to your EPSN and Talk Sport UK etc.

Ours kind of just follow various sports from season to season without really having in-depth knowledge of the teams in it or the plays of the game. You'll find one makes a comment, Eg. "The West Coast Web" and the rest just refer to it for the rest of the season without knowing SFA about how it actually works.

Yep it's called research! Something that is clearly lacking when you hear many journos these days. Research, provide evidence to inform the punters, or get an opinion bread on fact. Lazy journalism, never more evident than the Herald Sun podcasts around the draft when they stated they couldn't follow and didn't understand the bidding system. Not sure whether they realise we did quite well out of it!

Lazy journalism sells newspapers

I completely disagree with that, it's not selling newspapers but they keep on doubling down on making customers pay for something that us given up for free by every f wit with an opinion online.

Wasn't sure where to stick this. Article has a video interview.

YOUNG LION HIPWOOD TAKING A STAND
“It gave me a realisation about life and how quickly it can be taken away from you from some idiotic action,”
The tragic death of 18-year-old Brisbane man Cole Miller – allegedly as the result of an unprovoked one-punch attack in Fortitude Valley in Brisbane – hit home for Hipwood, who attended the same primary school as Miller.

Rhys Mathieson article. Some really nice quotes in there for us Lions supporters:) certainly a different personality to Aish.
Yep the
BRISBANE midfielder Rhys Mathieson says his draft snubbing will act as a motivator through the 2016 season.

The combative on-baller looked a first-round pick after claiming his second all-Australian jumper in 2015, but concerns over Mathieson’s fitness saw him slide to pick No. 39.

“I don’t think about it too much now and it’s just a number at the end of the day and I’m pleased to be drafted. But, I want to show that I’m a bit better than what I got picked at,” he told Fox Sports.

“It does motivate me ... I’ll put out there what I can this year and show them why I shouldn’t have slipped.”

The above could suggests Rocky may have had a word with him already? From overlooked in the national draft, 5th selection in the 2008 pre-season draft to go on and become an AFL Captain in only six seasons.

Be motivated Rhys, be motivated! :thumbsu:
