Clubs obviously doing something right if stef has re-signed. For someone who looked close to leaving to turn around and sign on for 3 years is a mammoth achievement imo. Lambo's influence?

Another three years for a 29 year old ruckman seems to be optimistic considering the injury history of most of our big guys over time.

Stefan Martin has signed a three-year contract extension, representing a huge vote of confidence in the Brisbane Lions' future.

The champion ruckman, a joint-winner of this year's Merrett-Murray Medal, had been contracted to the end of the 2016 season - and has now committed to the Club until at least the end of 2019.

The 29-year-old, rated one of the League’s best big men over the past 12 months, has 94 senior games to his name. In 2015, Martin averaged 32.5 hit outs and 21 disposals from 20 matches.

Martin will speak at a media conference later today, with the Lions expected to have more re-signing announcements soon.

Yeah, and eighteen months ago he was one of the most injury prone players going around.

The club must be very confident his body is right.

On the flip side, he's only played 94 games to date, so the new contract won't even get him to 200 games. Maybe the wear and tear of senior footy is more important than age.
 
Bit of a risky contract extension but a risk we probably had to take. Great to have a gun ruck locked in for the next 4 seasons. Also credit to Stef for turning his career around and staying loyal to the club.

Has only played 94 games - and only started putting his body through the riggers of AFL senior footy just over 7 years ago [didn't debut for the Dees until he was almost 22 years old]
 
absolutely huge! Just awesome! He would have gotten so many offers from the big Victorian clubs and despite that he stayed the course.

3 year extension, whatever, might be a bit risky but it's really the perfect way to make a statement about the direction of our club.

Nice news to wake up too. Well done Stef and the club. I would suggest his contract will be heavily front ended. Few of those clowns in the Melbourne media are starting to look a bit silly. Martin - Mayes - Green - Zorko were suppose to be leaving.
 
Huddo kept rucking till he was what... 73? (I think officially it was 34, admittedly part time in the end).

Still, you're only as old as the person you feel... or so I've heard. :$

Couldn't agree more, given our list profile and ruck stocks.

Stef's been with us for a few years and the club would know everything it needs to know about his fitness/injury status, so there's a big difference between giving him a 3 year extension and offering a 3 year contract to an older player from somewhere else.

No contract/extension is without risk, but I would have done the deal if it was up to me.
 
A three year contract extension for a 29 year old ruckman is, prima facie, a large risk for the club. I think it's a deal too good to refuse for Stef.

However, let's consider the following; Stef was a relatively late debutant and has not been subject to the rigours of league football for as long. He has also not played regular senior football until midway through the 2014 season.

Injury wise, he has bad his fair share, burning cannot recall anything too serious such as an ACL or major soft tissue injuries.

Stef is also a picture of near perfect body conditioning - he looks after himself and is one of the fittest blokes in the league. It would be fair to say he has aged quite well for an Aussie Rules player.

in saying that, Stef isn't invincible, so mutually, its quite a good deal for both parties. Obviously one of the biggest benefits outside of securing the services of a premier ruckman for three years, is the intangible morale boost of signing a player whom was heavily speculated to leave. That's invaluable for a club in our position.
 
Mayes would be a bigger re-signing then Rich for me.
 
Club probably had to give him three to get it over the line. If he gives us four more years relatively injury free it could help get us a flag.

I would really love if we could get a flag with Stef in the team. It would make a great story and be a huge advertisment for the club. Lots of Stef love goin on, it feels great!! Stoked for him and the club.
