Opinion Matthew Nicks: Adelaide's Coach (Part 2) - Full Support of the Board

Is Matthew Nicks the right coach for Adelaide?

  • Firmly yes (I love what I'm seeing)

  • Leaning yes

  • Can't decide either way

  • Leaning no (but don't sack him yet)

  • Firmly no (he should be sacked)

Would have been planned months ago. Talk about our amazing wins, our return to finals, how we've completed a perfect rebuild
Need David King on at the same time.

I may watch 360 for 1st time this year.

It’s ******* unbelievable. How the * did they think this was a good idea? So there would be noise, who cares? I’d rather noise than have signed up a dud.

Graeme Cornes on this topic was unbearable. “It’s exactly why we signed him, can you imagine if we were 0-3 and hadn’t signed him”

Um yeah I can, I’d be thinking thank * we haven’t signed him yet.

“Rowey did you expect our start to be any better? Gold Coast, Geelong, Freo, did you really expect to beat Geelong?”

Rowey “yeah I did, we beat all those teams last year and we beat Geelong at home”

Senile ambassador rumblings followed
He's mad! And he thinks we aren't playing well basically because all the players thought it would just happen. I mean come on!

I think one of Nicks bigger problems too is he's too nice, too accommodating and it's too late to suddenly turn into bad cop. Jack Hombsch summed it up entirely a few weeks ago when they asked about Rory Laird going back to play in defence. "I don't think Rory would like to do that."

A coach with any strength, one who is actually a leader would say to Laird "I understand you don't want to move back there, but your two options are half back in the AFL or half back in the SANFL, so take your pick".

He constantly talks about prioritising others, that just leads to those most vocal (and senior) getting their own way it seems.

The annoying thing with the media assessments is that all they do is point out that we’ve gone from #1 to #18 for scoring.

They fail to point out the underlying issues:
  • shitty slow defensive game plan
  • no overlap run to cut through the lines
  • slow plodding midfielders
  • minimal development of any “impact” midfielders: Rachele and Peds are right there waiting for an extended midfield run. Compare this to clubs like Melbourne (Windsor) and Brisbane (Fletcher) who are giving first round draftees full games around the ball in their first and second seasons
Yep, to just chalk it up to "Tex no goal, so Crows bad" probably shows they're just looking at stats and not watching games.

I expected to win every game out of the 3. Anyone who watched last year should have logically thought the same. Graham takes his ambassador role seriously and he is merely trying to be the voice of reason when there is none to be had. Being the original coach, he also has had a long time association with the club, he knows Roo really well, He would also know Olsen due to his long time association with the Sanfl.

To cut a long story short, Cornes backs in his mates. Like he did with Dank and Essendon, he is a personal close friend of Dank. The only problem is and its probably about time he got publicly called out for treating the public like they are stupid while he does it.

"At times there might be a little too much detail"

Re instructions to players
Yep, you can tell watching them play. They look like they're paralyzed by indecision because they've got a million instructions running through their minds. No one gets to play on natural instincts, it feels like it's 100% "follow instructions, follow the plan, do not deviate under any circumstances" running through a players head when they get the ball.

"Good after a win!" from Robbo as they cut to the break there.

Nicks, if nothing else, knows how to play the media like a fiddle.

He did say early last year that he thought he had undervalued talent in favour of effort and system. I guess he's done a complete 180 on that.

“The last three games are by no means an indication as to where this footy club is at. We look at a lot more data than that”

I’d pay my gold membership fee again to see what data that is
Like when Campo told Greenwood he and CEY were being dropped because "the data said..." and they found out that it was the opposite and Campo was just using it as an easy excuse, the truth was they wanted their guys back in there.

So after the usual Dorothy Dixer questions from Gerard/Robbo, here's my notes from what Nicks said-

-In a dark spot but never as bad as your are or as good as you are
-Just a few things need to be tweaked, no need for wholesale changes
-players/leaders disappointed, the next wave of leaders were good last year, backing them in this year
-Club getting around Milera
-(in response to a question after his contract extension) Not just about me, have lots of good people at the club all working hard
-(RE Gather round), great thing for the state and might help spark us, we love to be in prime time

Said before, he's leaned back into his worst instincts it seems.
