Quick thoughts after the second period (not including the match-sim specific stuff they are setting up for):

  • Maybe the wind is a factor (most of the goals for both teams have been kicked to right-of-screen), but our effort looked significantly better in Q2 compared to Q1, and the scoreboard benefitted directly from it. We go into 'half time' up by a couple goals.
  • Larkey is probably the best set shot in the AFL. Just doesn't miss.
  • Jaidyn Stephenson and Paul Curtis both noticeably lifted in that quarter, and their combined forward pressure/linkage play directly resulted in multiple goals.
  • George Wardlaw. Elite.
  • Xerri showed some great glimpses. I'm probably not as high on his play as some others here appear to have been, but he did his job.
  • Simpkin playing as a half-forward could prove to be a Clarko master-stroke.
  • Toby Pink and Biggy Nyuon showed glimpses. Both clearly need to get a clump of AFL-level games under their belt, but good signs are there.
  • LDU probably hasn't left 2nd gear all day.
  • McKercher moves well and reads the play well. Probably won't be as elite as Sheezel was in terms of a first-year player last year, but will be solidly best 22 and looks the goods. Looks like he needs to put on another 5kg+ of muscle though.
  • (Just for those who aren't watching) A few notable guys we didn't really see much (if any) of in the first half, either because they literally didn't play, or because they didn't get involved much at all; Phillips, Comben, B. George, Archer, Ford, Bailey Scott, Curtis Taylor, and Darcy Tucker
  • In summary, that second quarter was great. Our ball movement and effort was good enough to overcome a few instances of average disposal. Especially inside out forward 50. In the first quarter, once the ball went into our forward 50, we struggled badly to lock it in. In the second quarter, our effort lifted considerably and it paid immediate dividends.

Stephens has racked up plenty of footy too. A lot of it has been forward of centre too which is a big positive. Would be amazing if we could add a goal kicking wingman to our midfield mix. Having a defensive winger in Scott and a more attacking winger in Stephens would be the perfect balance on the outside.

Plenty to like that quarter + extra 5 min scenario.

Speed across the deck, speed of the ball movement ✅✅✅✅✅

Skill execution a lot more consistent that quarter too.

Risky game style, but I’d rather see us lose by taking it to teams rather then sitting back and being dictated too.

Here is my early predictions….

With this run and gun style off half back we are going to put a fair few teams to the sword and score heavily, especially when we are winning the midfield battle.

On the other hand we are also going to get scored against heavily, we are just not going to be able to defend turnovers efficiently, this is compounded by the fact that we have a very inexperienced backline.

At a minimum if this game is anything to go by we are at least going to be playing a bloody exciting brand of footy.
Exactly.

It will be interesting to see if the pies get another run on with the wind in the next quarter as it shortens the ground quite a bit and create space for their forwards, or if we can stifle that run and enable slower transition.

lol posters on pies board already put the blame of that qtr on the umps

We absolutely did get the rub of the green, if we're being honest.

Not complaining. I'll take it. But just saying I can understand their angst.

Should have been 50.
Jy? If so yep.
I’ve just taken a break from work to read the match updates in this thread - now I know we are dismal and nothing has changed but also super exiting and great to watch. Looking forward to catching up again later, keep the posts coming anyone who is there or has the live stream going.
We are looking so much better than we have for years. The first ten minutes looked average but afterwards we started to gel.

Fast exciting ball movement, well drilled etc etc. There are still issues but what do you expect when we have McKerch, Fisher and Stephens all playing their first games for us and playing important roles and Biggie, Pink and KDawson who have played less than ten games between them for us, with KDawson playing all of them.

Both sides are playing a fast moving turnover game so defense will struggle.

We look heaps better than I'd hoped. Whatever happens in the rest of the game we've shown we can make this work and with time we'll be a bloody good side.

I think the largest positive is it's not LDU vs the rest now.

LDU was the barometer of us getting close last year.

He's just been going through the motions today, with a flash of top level stuff.

We now have Wardlaw who has the ability to turn a game from the middle and we've seemingly got Sheezel 2.0 but with zone breaking leg speed.

From a pure personal perspective. We are significantly better.

I was one of Stephens biggest critics, but that's the best I've seen him at AFL level.

Very soft tbh but uses the ball so well.

Were all thinking it.
If we could swap Lazzaro's ability to find the footy and be where the footy is, with Powell's football ability to be MIA then we'd have a brownlow medalist on our list.

Laz cleans up the fumbles and some of the kicks inside 50 and there's a serious player there.
Alas its good signs he's finding it but also he's putting his head over the footy. They all are. Even Kerch.
Kicks aren't coming off but that's down to rust. The fact is he's finding it.

Positive signs all round. Wardlaw is an animal.

Funny what an uninterrupted pre-season under Clarko does hey? Baby steps and defence is still a worrying sign but we all knew that.
