"Hutchings improved his chances of an early AFL call-up by West Coast with an encouraging performance in the Falcons' 17.11 (113) to 8.9 (57) victory.
The 21-year-old had 25 possessions, five marks, three tackles, four inside 50s and kicked a goal in an impressive all-round effort that would have pleased Eagles officials."

"Shaping up as year of the Rabbit" quote from today's The Australian - what have they heard?

The last 2 rounds of WAFL despite being tagged he's averaged 30 disposals. Would be great to see him keep it up and push for AFL selection. With the current injuries it would be great to see him get an opportunity to prove that he can play at the highest level.

Mark Hutchings this is your week. You know your own body and capabilities well enough so I'm not expecting any 2nd game blues. Hope you get a good run in the guts, dig it out, good quick disposal, score your first goal for the Eagles and play well enough to get a run of 3 or 4 games. Don't hesitate, don't get caught with the pill. Good Luck and have a monster game! This is your time!

How was his first AFL game?

I didn't get to watch it or read much about it.

His stats looks pretty good, especially the 7 tackles. Does it seem like we have a player with Hutchings or is he just a WAFL bull?

From what I saw on the weekend, he is really very creative with his hands.

Sadly at 181cm and without a lot of toe, he'll be up against it, IMO, but he seems like the type to get everything out of themselves.

First game was solid without setting the game alight. Finds the hard ball well. Obviously the tackles were a highlight. Disposal was generally good but sprayed a couple. Should have scored near the end but a rush of blood and he had a behind. IMO showed he could be a player and we should get games into him - so the MC dropped him.
IMO his second game (admittedly only GWS) continued to find the ball (less tackles cos we had a lot more of the ball), good disposal and decision making, more handballs this week - fast hands to a player in better position than him, and I really noticed that he blocked and scragged opponents to allow Shuey, Pridda, Scooter more time to get free. IMO his blocking was up there with Rowan Jones. Great team player, no fancy stuff here. He won't be trying to win the scraggiest beard comp; he won't be getting tatts all over; he won't be braiding his hair and tying it up in a top knot. But week in week out he will get stuck in, give 100% and try to beat his man, and get the ball out to others who will score. I love the way he goes about it. IMO he will be a better pick up than Cripps, Morton, Wellingham, etc.
22 disposals in 73 minutes - wonder how many he would have had in a full game - LOL.

WCE website. 5 things we learnt:
4. Positives were scarce in the 41-point loss, but the form of Mark Hutchings continues to be encouraging. It seems ridiculous to suggest he is a mature age recruit, having just turned 22, but he has benefitted from a longer development phase in the second tier and should continue to improve with further AFL exposure. He had 19 possessions and worked hard to generate some efficiency through the middle.

So after a good game against Richmond, Hutchings was dropped for the St Kilda game. The Eagles fell over the line to beat Saints but missed Hutchings' tackling ability. Hutch was BOG for West Perth:
Hutchings, who had around 20 possessions in the disappointing loss to Richmond last Monday night, pushed aside the deflation of being excluded for the game against St Kilda and produced a best-on-ground effort against Claremont.

The hard running midfielder was opposed to Eagles teammate and Claremont tough nut Pat McGinnity and they were engaged in an enthralling battle.

Hutchings had 32 possessions and kicked three goals,

He was sorely missed

After being robbed of his chance to play all 22 rounds of the home and away season in 2013 this talented and much maligned West Coast Eagles midfielder is set to make a massive impact on the 2014 season. Blessed with magnificent footy smarts, an impeccable kick, almost suicidal courage and gut running to rival the best the competition has to offer, it is expected that Hutchings will over take Matt Priddis as the Field Marshall of the Eagles midfield for the rest of the foreseeable future.
