Australian Jewish Association President David Adler has relayed a message from a Jewish man who was wrongly identified as the Bondi Junction stabbing offender.

Prior to police confirmation of the offender’s identity, thousands of people on social media were falsely claiming Benjamin Cohen was the knifeman who killed six people on Saturday.

Sounds an appropriate thing to do doesn't it?

Wtf, why do we need to know this 'guardian'?

It's a matter of thoroughness through the investigation. If he had lunch with someone for example, the police will want to know who it was.

Last night when I clicked on the Bondi attack twitter hashtag, this was the first thing, top of the page, that came up, by Grok. If I noticed it, hundreds of thousands to millions over the world may have seen it too. So Musk's Grok hasn't helped here, at all.

Female Cop Neutralizes Sydney Mall Islamist Terrorist
A terrorist attack occurred in Sydney, Australia, where a terrorist stabbed multiple people in a Jewish area located next to an Israeli restaurant. The incident has sparked global attention, with hashtags #Israel, #Australia, and #Iran trending on social media platforms. Authorities are investigating the attack, and the community is in shock and mourning.

Grok is an early feature and can make mistakes. Verify its outputs.

So, Police investigation.

The latest from Grok.

Sydney Stabbing Tragedy: 6 Dead, 12 Injured
In a tragic incident at Westfield's Bondi shopping center in Sydney, Australia, 40-year-old Joel Cauchi, a Queensland man who recently moved to NSW, carried out a mass stabbing, resulting in the deaths of six individuals and injuries to several others. The attack, which took place on a Saturday, has been identified as a mental health matter rather than an act of terrorism. The community is in mourning, and discussions have arisen about the support available for individuals suffering from mental health issues.

There's a police investigation where some information is kept from the public and other information the public can access. It's always been this way.

I'm not sure I understand your objection, the public likes transparency. It helps keep things honest.

As part of that transparency, we know Channel 7 made another mistake and Cohen will no doubt, be compensated.

News outlets rushing to be first, not the most accurate, causes a lot of harm.

But did 7News actual publish that above graphic (that was on twitter that I have a screenshot of from earlier this morning pasted below), or is it is just something someone (nothing to do with 7News made up to stir up trouble)?
\

7NEWS incorrectly reported the name of the Bondi Junction perpetrator, incorrectly claiming that it was another, uninvolved individual whose name had been circulating on social media. It reported the trolling as news.

THAT's the issue here.

And EVERYTHING to do with 7NEWS.

Their defence that it was 'human error' is friggin' laughable. Yes Mr Stokes that is precisely the issue, yet again. And it says everything about your network's ethical and procedural standards.

I don't think his mental health should be the primary identification

If he wasn't white it sure as shit wouldn't be

The vast majority of people with mental illnesses are not going to do this and it's unlikely it's primarily because he had a mental illness that this happened

In the absence of evidence of any ideology driven factors it can't be discounted as an explanation.

I wonder if this is linked?

Theres a couple of kms between Bondi Beach and the shopping centre. But regardless of the specifics, there are so many misogynistic acts of violence committed against women by men in Australia on an almost daily basis that it would not be out of place to say that they are not all linked in a deeper sense.

It's just people doing the same thing with mental illness that they do with religion or nationality Though

Looking for a reason that is an easy out

And all it does is further other and ostracize people with mental illness

Not saying it doesn't. But there have certainly been historical cases of people known to have mental illness and not appropriately treated and them being violent in the context of this lack of treatment, and it is known that this individual had a mental illness. Again, it can't be ruled out.

Again the problem there isn't having a mental illness it's how society and our systems treat/don't treat people with mental illness.

It goes towards people not getting help. Someone in my family hid it for years he was being treated for depression because he viewed it as a mental illness. I was shocked he felt he had to hide it, perfect mental health 100% of the time over a lifetime would be uncommon imo.
