I disagree tho with the notion of "reinventing the wheel". Look at the leaps and bounds 2K has made between NBA 10 to 11 and from 11 to 12. Each time done within a year's development. There's no excuse for EA whatsoever, clearly they do it on purpose (no need to cos we have exclusive license and people will continue to buy anyway so why over-do anything). And APF 2K8 is STILL technically far superior, so much they have in the game that EA constantly pretends they don't have time to do.
Its interesting that this is what EA seems to think when you compare it to NBA 2K11, which is widely regarded as one of the best recently released sports games. NBA 2K also doesnt have any competition (EA hasnt had a basketball game for a few years iirc), yet NBA 2K has progressed while Madden hasnt
