Personally know the father of a well-known premiership Swan who surprisingly has felt and told me for the last 6-8 years that “horse has to go, he’ll not win another thing”, who would be very happy with this news.

You make it sound like he was sacked. He wasn't.

He resigned with a year to go.

It is a tough gig as an AFL coach even when you are coaching a successful side to grandfinals.

Suggest he simply decided he didn't have the energy or passion to go another year and for the teams benefit has handed the reins to Cox.

i dont believe he was formally sacked.

but i do think he was given the option to go out on his own terms, rather than be sacked.

Is that you Kingy?

Yes, Kingy here. I think Sydney on John have made the right decision here. He has been a great coach but he just couldn't get the business done at the business end of the season.
It's sad, but clubs move on, that's the reality of AFL football.
Part of me says did John not listen enough? Was Coxey shut out? We may never know.

Has he done a Graeme Wright? 30 years at the highest level, needs a year off and then back in a new role? Seems to have been done in a civilised way, no blood on the floor.

Blokes earned a rest surely, and very hard to get a fresh start as Sydney coach with the AFL geniuses breathing down your neck.

Good luck to Cox, and hope Horse spends six months on a Thai beach getting some bad tatts and a scattering of braids around the fringe of his enormous scone.
