I had high hopes for Lord coming into the 2024 season. Thought he announced himself after kicking 4 goals in the loss against Brisbane in the 2023 qualifying final. But he had a disappointing 2024. Hope he turn things around in 2025.
Injury didn't help his cause this season.
Still have hopes for him.
But yes, this has to be his defining year coming up.
Otherwise he could find himself traded.

Missed the boat on DGB

The real question I have on Watkins is, does anybody ever see him playing AFL? I've not watched him so if anyone else has then I'll take their word.

Or is it really a stunt to try keep Butters? Not sure how I feel about that unless he's guaranteed to stay. Sounds dumb to me
Watkins is a small mid.
I believe a bigger bodied and taller option in the midfield is a more pressing need for us going forward.
You're right - maybe he's here to keep Butters with us?

Also I don't think that Luko would have suited a Hardwick games style anyway so add that to a huge wage. Then paying a huge contract for Mac Andrew and then again for Rioli he was surplus to requirements and we should have capitalised on that like Geelong did. I can't say we got pantsed, but I still don't know what Atkins contract length is and I don't want to know. Its going to take a lot of convincing to ever make me see that was a good thing.
We received pick 29 for bringing home Atkins who is simple a cherry on top bonus as that pick gave us Jack Whitlock

For me it is a rare win, win a current VFL Captain who has just claimed back-to-back best and fairest with North.
From Bacchus Marsh he is eager to relocate to SA and happens to be best mates with Butters.

And yes, he may not get picked up in the SSP but has committed to playing for Port next year regardless where we all know the Magpies badly need some depth.

Parker in his post-draft interview emphasised Burgoyne and Montgomery are still father-son eligible and he hoped they would continue to be part of Port's program to develop in the areas where we thought they need to. I expect they will train with Port during the off-season. The door is at least ajar.
With no first rounder next year and a co promised draft the spots are there if they are willing to fight for them.

Now that we have Whitlock, I feel a fair bit better about the combination of Georgiades, Lukosius and Whitlock going forward. It’s a good mix that covers different bases especially with the prospect of Berry and Barrett also bringing different talents to their roles forward.

I hate that we traded out of the first round but I think we’ll get back in there with one of Farrell (RFA) or Bergman moving on at the end of 2025, unfortunately.
And don't forget about Xavier Walsh, the former East Perth 195cm spear head has a bit of mongrel in him and has shown he can play at both ends.

Only if Whitlock can develop to play 2nd ruck.

They say he can but I don't see it yet. Doesn't seem to like the bash and crash enough.

It's an area for development but he has done quit a bit of ruck work at least at underage footy.

Another area for growth with Whitlock is his ruck craft. An invaluable trait for key forwards is to provide a secondary ruck rotation, and he was a reliable chop-out option before upping his minutes on-ball towards the end of the season. Whitlock was not a massive hitout winner and can further develop, but showed great signs of clever play around stoppages with his ability to tap to himself or teammates, and help work clearances.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Whitlock gets games next year. We haven’t been afraid in the past to give young beanpole forwards a crack in their first years. Westhoff and Marshall come to mind.

I love Walsh as a CHB.

Walsh's preference is to play defence and it's a Port Adelaide tradition to turn ok forwards into stellar defenders.

I don't rate Lukosius. Marshall likewise and he's got the added negative of the concussion problems. I like the way Lord plays and he's shown glimpses but he's also had many games where he's been close to invisible.

I'm not worried about the defenders either. None of those guys are going to win an All Australian guernsey but we don't need them to.

Except Allir who has already won an AA guernsey in 2021.

Oh and how many times was Luko dropped again last year? will be up to 5 or 6 soon.

First time replying on bigfooty so go easy on me. I reckon it will be something among the lines of this.

5. Mitch Georgiades

12. Jack Lukosius

17. Logan Evans

19. Joe Berry

22. Ollie Lord

30. Xavier Walsh

31. Joe Richards

32. Jack Whitlock

37. Christian Moraes

40. Tom Cochrane

42. Rory Atkins

43. Jack Watkins (TBC)

45. Jacob Moss

Joe Berry loves the number 9 so Mitch moves to number 5️⃣ so Joe Berry has a nine on his guernsey and everyone is happy.

Ollie Lord moves into the 22 vacant by big crippled Dixon and hopefully he can toss some common sense into old Kenny and change the game plan going forward. I was thinking Rory Atkins potentially could wear 22 but nah I’m not feeling it.

Jack Lukosius and Trent McKenzie both have a great left foot so it’s only fitting that the defensive cannon hangs over the number 12 to the forward cannon.

Logan Evans has to change numbers surely. I was tossing up between five or seventeen but I went seventeen since former defender Tom Clurey wore it well for many years.

Joe Richards moves into number 31 and hopefully he can kick a few more goals and prove to me that this number isn’t cursed. Francis Evans, Sam Skinner, Trent Burgoyne, Aidyn Johnson all wore the number 31 and none of them proved to be any good so Joe please prove me wrong.

Jack Whitlock and Christian Moraes both get irrelevant numbers for now but in 2026 or 2027 they can move up lockers.

Don’t forget Jacob Moss everyone. He’s going to get the most irrelevant number but I don’t care.

If Jack Watkins gets picked in the pre season then he’ll wear the number 43 since there’s no numbers left so 🤷‍♂️.

Farrell?

Think he’s out of contract at the end of this year and is already being talked up as an in-demand free-agent. Obviously he’s a country Vic boy but I’m worried that Houston and Amon have set a precedent for us losing these seemingly happy, long-time servants in their mid-late careers.

As much as we had a surplus of HBFs, to lose one or both of Bergman and Farrell on the back of Houston would leave us very short of quality in that area of the ground.

Don't think Faz will leave. As far as I know he doesn't have a reason like Houston atm

Rankine was dropped to the Sun's reserves too before he went to the Crows, so that is not a reliable indicator of a players true talent. Lukosius will thrive at Port.

I don't like forwards turned into ruck options personally. Completely different skill set. Chop out now and then against other part timers maybe but it’s tough enough being a decent forward just do that.

I absolutely see him getting a shot at some point.

I don’t think he’s too far off physically.

3 months in the weight room those shoulders and arms will tone up well.

Yeah that's all I meant.

I just want a better chop out than Finlayson.
