We headed out to Spotswood to take on the Old Boys in our Round 17 clash, and we started strongly but couldn’t hit the side of a barn. After kicking the first five behinds of the match, MKMatty finally found the big sticks to score our opening goal. Despite dominating the play, we managed just 1.6 before the Old Boys registered their first score. By quarter-time, we’d had nine scoring shots to their four but only held a five-point lead, leaving us to wonder if our inaccuracy might come back to bite us.

The second quarter started with a flurry of goals traded between the sides before we regained control. However, much like the first quarter, we squandered opportunities, adding four behinds in a row. The Old Boys capitalised, kicking two quick goals to take the lead. Matera92 pushed forward to show Art Vandelay how it was done, booting his first goal to restore our advantage, only for the Old Boys to reply again. Matera wasn’t done yet, adding his second major to give us a slender two-point lead at halftime. Seventeen scoring shots to ten, yet only a two-point lead—it was clear how much we’d butchered our chances in front of goal.

The third quarter began in familiar fashion, with more behinds than goals, but we finally got on a run. MWPP, Señor M, and Shadow Man all slotted goals to extend our lead. Matera added his third just before the siren to give us a 22-point buffer heading into the final term.

The Old Boys started the last quarter strongly, kicking a quick goal to reduce the margin, but MKMatty quickly replied to restore the 22-point gap. From there, the Old Boys took control, chipping away at our lead. With under five minutes remaining, we clung to a 10-point advantage and looked set to hold on. Unfortunately, all those missed chances earlier in the match came back to haunt us, as the Old Boys kicked two late goals to snatch a heartbreaking two-point win, crushing any lingering hopes we had of making finals. Despite 27 scoring shots to 19, we fell short, 11.16 (82) to 13.6 (84).

Art Vandelay will rue his four behinds, not only because they proved costly, but also because they might have cost him the chance to become the first Bear to reach 300 goals. Matera also battled inaccuracy, kicking 3.3 but still managed to lead the way with three goals. MKMatty and Shadow Man added two goals each, while MWPP, Ronnie Raven, Señor M, and SSSSSS contributed one apiece.

Cap led the possession count with 26 disposals and 13 hitouts. Ronnie Raven was next best with 25 touches, followed by Test Tickle with 24, and Art Vandelay with 21.

Multiple milestones woo.

We haven't done well with milestones but maybe two negatives will equate to a positive.

It's a cute thought!

The Bears returned home to the Stadium in the Sky for the final match of Season 38, facing the Wonders. With finals out of reach, the stakes were low, but it was a special occasion as Shadow Man and JoseMourinho celebrated their 50th games for the Bears.

The team lineup saw some changes, with RonnieRaven pushed forward, a move that paid off immediately as he scored the first behind and goal of the game. Millky95 followed up with another, and the Bears were two goals up within five minutes. @RookiePick’s move to the forward line also bore fruit as he kicked a goal, while RonnieRaven and Millky95 each added their second for the quarter. By the first break, the Bears led by 10 points.

SSSSSS ensured the good start continued into the second quarter, kicking the opening goal. The Wonders replied with a couple of quick goals to close the gap, but Ronnie was unstoppable, adding his third goal. The Wonders struck back again, narrowing the margin to just 2 points, but late goals to Cap and Matera92 gave the Bears a 14 point buffer at halftime.

The third quarter began much like the second, with SSSSSS booting the first goal. Despite some missed chances that stretched the lead to 21 points, the Wonders stormed back into the contest, kicking four unanswered goals to take an 8 point lead into the final term. They extended their advantage with the opening goal of the fourth quarter, and at 14 points down, the Bears’ faithful feared the game might slip away.

But what came next was a stunning turnaround. Cap sparked the fightback with a crucial goal, Chipmunk added another to narrow the margin, and when Art Vandelay_ kicked his second, the Bears had reclaimed the lead. kane249 then stepped up to extend the margin to 11 points, a remarkable 25 point swing in just nine minutes.

It wouldn’t be a Bears game without some late drama. The Wonders pegged back the margin with a late goal, cutting it to 5 points, bringing back memories of last week’s loss. However, this time the Bears held firm, managing the clock and adding two late behinds to seal a hard fought 7 point victory.

Cap was outstanding, racking up 15 hitouts, 34 possessions, and 2 goals. kane249 wound back the clock, finishing with 30 possessions, 11 marks, and a goal. Matera92 added 26 disposals and a goal, while Millky95 (24 disposals, 2 goals), RookiePick (24 disposals, 8 marks, 1 goal), SSSSSS (24 disposals, 5 tackles, 2 goals), I Dont Care (22 disposals), Senor M (22 disposals), Chipmunk (20 disposals, 1 goal), and JoseMourinho (20 disposals) all contributed strongly.

RonnieRaven led the way with 3 goals, while Art Vandelay_ , Cap, Millky95 , and SSSSSS each booted 2. Singles went to Chipmunk, kane249, Matera92, and RookiePick.

The Bears finished the season in tenth position, just two points shy of the top eight. While there will be no finals campaign this time, the team’s spirited performance in the final game was a fitting way to close out Season 38.

Final Stats for S38 New
Stats.png

Qooty Stats
Cap easily got the most hitouts for the club, with 9 players in total registering a hit out this season.
Chipmunk was the only player to average over 20 disposals per match with Cap just falling short with 19.
Everyone got a mark except for Tommycash
kane249 put in an amazing effort to only make 6 tackles all season playing in defence.
Unless your name is Millky95, you couldn't buy a free kick this season and probably gave away a lot more free kicks than you received.
Only 2 of us didn't kick a goal this season Electronic_Renaissance and myself. ER didn't score at all and I contributed a point, which I am sure was very important in whatever game it happened.
5 players hit the 1000 DT mark for this season, with Chipmunk beating Cap by 1.

Final Qooty Stats S38.png

Race to 300 Goals
Its currently a 3 way tie for the first to kick 300 Goals for the Bears. We will have to wait until S39 to see who gets there first.

Best and Fairest Seasons 5, 6, 7 New
Before we dive into Season 38's Best and Fairest awards, we've got some housekeeping to take care of. As you all know, the club was founded way back in Season 5, but no Mateflon Medals were awarded in our first three seasons. We've finally fixed that oversight and run the numbers to crown the winners for those seasons.

The winners of the first three Mateflon Medals are:
  • Season 5: Davew
  • Season 6: Thehitman
  • Season 7: Nickthepie

Sorry, Dingster, I couldn’t rig you another Mateflon.

See you all tomorrow night for the Season 38 Mateflon Medal, it’s going to be a big one!

Of course I’ll be there tony . I’m not sure what to wear , but bringing back my inaugural Mateflon outfit (from when I was just a opposition guest who was exploring my options but not signed, as well as a someone’s +1…) is always an option

Nick TheHitman DaveW

Are these our three recruits from the off-season? Bringing back Bears legends?

How did Robertio miss this scoop
