St Kilda may well win the flag but it has nothing to do with Grant Thomas. It shows the draft works and he has good players underneath him that make him look good. He is still the worst coach in the job but along way. Well done to the saints tonight just too good.

That makes plenty of sense.

Fair dinkum, how on earth does a club with the injury list that the Saints have had all season (including the pre-season) find themselves with a home prelim??

I still cannot fathom how people with half a brain do not take this guy seriously as a football coach.

I read recently on Saintsational that he is the most underrated coach in the history of the game, and I have to agree. Wholeheartedly.

What he has managed so far this year is nothing short of amazing.

He's one out of the box yet doesn't get the credit he deserves. Very odd.
I've never been an enormous wrap for Grant Thomas, but fair's fair. He's done an exceptional job getting that injury-depleted list to a home preliminary final.

Any other coach would be awarded the credit that's due, he should be too.

What a dumb (and bitter) thing to say.

Winners are grinners

:D

He is a coach with one of the greatest lists of all time - up there potentially with the 3 peat Lions.

I expect a minimum of 2 Premierships from this playing group - 3 if Cornflakes is any good.

Lets see him eat some real pressure!

And again, I rest my case.

Sydney
West Coast
Adelaide
St Kilda
Kangaroos
Geelong
Melbourne
Port Adelaide

W. Bulldogs
Fremantle
Brisbane
Richmond
Essendon
Hawthorn
Collingwood
Carlton

And I rest my case.

saints have a good list but i can't see how they are expected to have a flag by now.....
a majority of their gun players are 23 and under...
look at port and brisbane, they had success now their lists are looking old..
i think the saints have primarily under-achieved due to the pre-mature pressure that was put on them for success.
i don't really think that you can put Thomas on either side of the coin yet.
the next two years will be a better indication..
to say that they should have 1 or 2 flags by now is crazy

Teams should be able to coach themselves once on the field. Obviously, making the decisions Thomas did on Preliminary Final night were not the best, but hey, how many coaches would love to play in 2 consecutive Preliminary finals?

I like the way people are so quick to criticise and label him as the worst coach in the comp with no fact to back up their comments. Sure he has made some poor decisions on ocassion, but he has made some fantastic ones as well. Are we to assume that all of the other coaches have never made poor decisions or is it that they just don't admit it.
And people who argue that anyone could coach the saints list to a flag are, quite frankly, full of it.
GT deserves credit for what he has done, and yes he deserves pressure on what he will do in the future; he is definitely the most criticised coach in the league and will be until the saints win a flag...or three

if you kept the messiah you would have 3 premierships by now :)

This is a funny thread.

they'd have 2, and they'd even have 1 already if they had a reasonable medical room/fitness program.

GT playing kosi in the ruck is one of the great shames of wasted talent too. Would be a gun deep forward imo. They dont seem to have recruited a developed tap ruckman either which just means kosi is going to continue to take a battering in the ruck for a few yrs until gehrig retires and then he moves forward. Even then they'll probably leave him in the ruck and put watts up forward. And when you look at their key position talent what was fergus thinking really.

How can anyone say with a certainity jack, I am sure the possibility would have increased but this hasnt allways proved to be the case with sport.

ofcourse, but you feel a game like the prelim against port in '04 at footy park that MB would of got them over the line. GT outcoached NC this yr too so i suppose you cant be too critical. Their fitness program has been poor though, i think the guy doing it was sacked after this season finished.

Coaching Move of the Year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DSCF2856.sized.jpg

That move had no bearing on the game, the fact that the Saints could not kick straight and apply scoreboard pressure early on was more of an issue. It would have been a different story had the Saints been 4 goals up at 3 qtr time rather than a few points being the difference.

I agree. Kosi's performance against the Dogs up forward at the MCG this year was one of the best I saw all year.

Who's the good looking bloke in the pic?? hahahaha :D :p

What's all this crap about our list?

We have had the best list management of all AFL teams. The reason we have a good list is because we were prepared to trade away our star players for youth and now it's paying off and no one can hack it.

We traded away:
Everitt, Hall, Lappin, Smith, Carr

And traded for:
Hamill, Gehrig, Dal Santo, Powell, Penny, Ackland, Fiora

Picked up Voss in pre season draft, milne off essendon's rookie list. Gwilt, Thompson and S Fisher from suburban clubs.

The thing that I respect about the St Kilda coaches is their confidence in their own ability to turn around the attitude of a player who nobody else in the league wanted to touch. Eg. Ackland and Fiora. I am not saying they are playing great, but they are (Ackland especially) playing far better than was previously thought possible. Nobody else wanted to give them a chance. As a group, the players have probably underachieved slightly, but winning premierships takes a big dollop of luck as well as good management.
