WHY CANT THE AFL KEEP THIS MAN? He is worth more than 'talent' alone.

"The importance of the relationship between Australia Post and the AFL is we want people to be proud of who they are, and be proud of where they've come from. And this is a game for everyone." Karmichael Hunt, Australia Post and AFL Multicultural Ambassador

Special 'K', the Multicultural Ambassador.

I can't actually find anything that states he's staying or leaving. Other than speculation, that is.

I dont see a reason why we wouldnt want to retain him. Great ambassador for the club and the code and if fit I can see him being best 22. Problem is I doubt the AFL will continue to pay him extra for marketing, so the Suns will have to find the salary cap space. If the ARU offers him a significant contract I dont see the Suns trying to matching it.

well my mail is. that the Suns want to retain his services,
I doubt this very much, K is not int he best 22 and is falling further and further behind as the group matures, K can be a sensation at Union or League ( with his slimmed down body and new running ability). I think if the word is they want to retain him it is a PR excercise because the club doesn't want to be seen as the one letting him go ( bad look) where as if he leaves it's all good.

I wouldn't be surprised if we want to keep him, actually.

But he probably doesn't. And you can't blame him for that at all.

Do you think if he was best 22 or even close to it he would be considering a stay?

Surely with how far he has come the taste of success in another code would be a huge temptation.

This year has been disastrous for K with injuries :(

I will be extremely looking forward to buying his book on his career so far...

I would be fascinated to know K's opinions of recent weeks, team dynamics, coaching, etc, etc.

He has been at the suns during the most important stage of our development.

Please don't sign a 'shut up' clause. You book will be gold!

NRL help Gold Coast Titans pursue code jumper Karmichael Hunt

THE Titans have upped the ante in the battle for Karmichael Hunt with the NRL involved in a secret meeting to gauge the AFL convert’s interest in a return to rugby league.
The Courier-Mail can reveal NRL head-of-football Todd Greenberg held talks with Hunt’s management as the Titans explore ways to fund a big-money comeback.
But unless the NRL can formally agree to provide some salary-cap dispensation, the Titans face an ominous task trumping rugby’s Queensland Reds for the former Broncos star.

One factor, unquestionably, is money.
The NRL are likely to baulk at an ARU-style top-up, but could consider salary-cap concessions to ease financial pressure on the Titans.
Hunt earns upwards of $1 million a season at the Suns, a package NRL clubs are reluctant to finance given the 27-year-old’s five-year hiatus from the rugby league.
Incoming Broncos coach Wayne Bennett would support a play for Hunt but it is understood Brisbane hierarchy have cooled after nearing signing him in January.

But the Titans remain genuinely interested in Hunt, sounding out the NRL on the prospect of providing assistance to prise him from AFL rivals Gold Coast Suns.
At a chief executives conference in February, club bosses discussed the notion of NRL boss Dave Smith having the power to fund a big-name signing under a beefed-up Marquee Player Allowance.

The Titans’ interest escalated last month when Greenberg spoke with Hunt’s manager David Riolo, who said on Wednesday night his client remains a free agent for next season.
“Rugby league is still a realistic option for Karmichael,” Riolo said.
“He’s been in the game before, but whether it becomes real is a different thing.
“We’re hopefully not too far away from a decision. The Titans are a definite option, he lives on the Coast and enjoys it there, but there’s a number of things he’s weighing up.”

He cant play for the titans....fair dinkum!

Id probably be encouraged to watch a few Titans games if K went there. And that's the problem for the AFL and the Suns. The reason they bought him from NRL is a double edged sword. If he goes back to the NRL in this City (GC), then its predictable that he will create interest in the NRL Gold Coast franchise....the Titans. At the expense of the Suns. How much expense im not sure, but it will come at a cost.

How the NRL reacts to this will show us how much interest they think K will pull from the Suns. Its a code war on the GC. Make no mistake. The Suns are winning. The NRL need to do something and need to be seen to be doing something about defending RL heartland. Interesting times....

K would never diss The Suns or footy after his time here. He now better appreciates how tough Aussie Rules is to play at the highest level. I'm sure he will be a better footballer for his time at the Suns. The AFL have got what they needed from him. He has been a very good ambassador for footy on the coast. If the NRL want to claim it is a victory getting him back then it is a very hollow victory. He's not coming back because he misses League. He'd be going back because he couldn't quite make it in the AFL.

That's a bit unfair. I believe he could make regular 1st grade at some AFL clubs. We have a star studded midfield. Other teams K gets a run regularly. He could have made it, just here at the Suns it was twice as hard.

Something I'd like to note: There was a video on the AFL website (the players getting grilled series), and one of the questions was "Do you prefer League or Union?".

K answered Union.

I personally can't see him returning to NRL.

At this stage of his career, $$ are going to be very important. As for a longer term future, Union would present another brand new challenge as he would look forward to being a pampered Wallaby, world travel, Bledisloe cup, Super 14 (?) and Union players careers last longer than RL or AFL players at the top level as a rule.

Union would be the best fit. But if it comes down to purely money...who knows? The NRL may decide to throw some cash at him as well?

Bluey said he'd like to see K stay, but that K would get 3 offers on the table before he chose. A NRL offer, a Union offer, and an AFL offer. That's what he said. What sort of offer K gets from AFL, and where it is supposed to come from is intriguing..

GOLD Coast Titans look like having to wage their uphill battle against the Queensland Reds for Karmichael Hunt’s services without meaningful help from the NRL.
An NRL spokesman said on Thursday that the League “would not go into specifics’’ when asked if Gold Coast Suns player Hunt was considered a player deemed worthy of a discretionary marquee player allowance by chief executive Dave Smith.
The Courier-Mail reported on Thursday that NRL head of football Todd Greenberg had had talks with the Titans about ways of finding salary cap assistance in bringing Hunt back to the NRL.

The NRL spokesman said the NRL would consider using the marquee player allowance only in exceptional circumstances and on individual merits.
Having declined to confirm the NRL had seized upon Hunt as worthy of a marquee allowance to be paid by the League, it’s reasonable to come to the conclusion there has been no such allowance made available to the cash-strapped Titans.
“We see this as something that may only be used once every 10 years to attract the very best to our game,” the spokesman said.
So the obvious response to that is, if not Hunt, then who qualifies as being worth this allowance?

Israel Folau? An All Black attacking weapon such as Ben Smith or Cory Jane? Are none of these good enough?
If the NRL were to look favourably on a club as having a case for marquee allowance assistance, would there be better candidates than the Titans and Hunt?
Smith said in an interview with The Courier-Mail two weeks ago that the NRL had already provided resources to support the Titans through their financial problems.
How better to help a club which is not able to pay 100 per cent of the salary cap — and the Titans are one of several clubs in that situation this year — than to advance some of the NRL war chest in bringing a star player to a struggling team?
I asked Smith if any club had presented a case for marquee player allowance assistance since it came into effect in February and he said none had.
Smith said he was sure the club chief executive officers all understood the process of presenting the case to the NRL for a marquee allowance.
“The approach could come either way. It would be for exceptional players in other codes,’’ Smith told The Courier-Mail.
“We have the ability as a game to do it now. It’s going to happen very rarely and you run a commercial slide rule over it. If you bring an individual who dramatically improves the image of the game and dramatically influences the mothers and the families to be more interested in our game, I’d consider it, but it is exceptional.’’
Hunt is an exceptional case, no matter how many revisionist critics he seems to be gathering during an AFL season in which he has made one senior appearance.

Hunt has played 44 AFL games for the Suns, having tailored his strength and conditioning regime to the demands of a different sport.
He played 10 State of Origin games for Queensland before his defection from the Broncos, the last in 2009, so had he stayed in league he was every chance of being one of the rare band of Origin players with 20-plus appearances.
Also a French top-tier rugby union player during a fill-in stint while he awaited his AFL debut, Hunt would be a valuable asset in the Titans’ battle to re-engage the Gold Coast sports market.

I have added a poll to make it interesting amongst us. :)
you know something you bugger...haha. I hope what you are suggesting comes true!!

I voted Suns, just because I believe K is wanted, feels wanted, and wants to stay.
