While enteraining yet another round of Ross simping sounds like a lot of fun, the real question is that I think very few of us think even a 5-8 finish is good enough with where this list is at now.

Would take a brave brave board to fire a finals playing coach though.
Would 5-8 and a finals win be more of a success or finishing top 4 and going out in straight sets

It’s always hard to judge potential against reality. It’s pretty bold to suggest we “should” be finishing top 4. I think doing better than scraping into finals is fair enough to expect but there’s a big gulf between top 4 and 8th. I mean, Brisbane finished 5th in 2024.
Likewise, the fifth finish in 2022 felt to me no worse than a fourth — both for the fact it set us up for a finals win, but also because 15.5 wins would often get you top 4.

Same response to your post and The Lobbster in that I consider top 4 finish based on finals finishes.

I do acknowledge there is nuance in the years performance outside ladder position

Interesting discussion.

For me, I can see some attributes of a very good coach in JL - players are absolutely bought in, really strong unity of purpose.

What he still has to prove is he can get the team playing a type of footy which stands up consistently and wins big games, and especially finals.

Personally I think that will happen this year, and hasn’t consistently yet because the list has been too young.

I still love Ross for what he did for us, but I have to admit that his style of attack never really seemed top notch, and I don’t think he would be doing more with the list than JL has to date.

There may also be more risk of key players being disgruntled with his style, even though that has changed over the years.

Definitely in JLs corner this year, but the pressure is on more than ever.

I am asking for 15 wins. If we get that, then I will be happy. (Plus at least one finals win)

Most years that is top 6, some time it is top 4.

16 wins pretty much locks in top 4.

Scraping into the bottom 7 or 8th, especially if we lose the first week it would be a touch call. He would be under a lot of pressure, and we should look to see what other coaches are available.
