Coach Justin Longmuir Pt 2

Sometimes he does. Sometimes it's the opposite. How he managed to win just 4 games in 2016 is still Freos greatest underachieving year in its history. Finished on top 2015, played in a competitive Prelim, them fell off a cliff.

Saints fans would be bitterly disappointed with 2024.

Other than WC who has a worse list than the Saints? Incredible that RTB got them into the 8 last year.

It’s the selection committee that’s worrying me now; I’m certain they are gonna piss me off in 2025.
They cost us at least 6-7 games this year.I’m still trying to recover from the Tabs/Voss ruck combo against Geelong and no ruckman in Hawthorn game.
Yep,
I not sure I blame them for that many losses as it is rarely your bottom 3 players who make a difference but the ruck mistakes were costly. It's easy in hindsight with the first mistake but contining to do it again and again is the problem.

Essendon & Geelong were stupid mistakes after we had seen the outcome from the Hawks game. They finally fixed it up for the GWS & Port games but we had left ourselves too much to do.

I wouldn't be firing or extending until the season is over, including finals.

There’s close to zero chance of us waiting until the end of the season to make a decision. Especially if things are going well.

Let’s be honest he has the same season as this year he’ll be re-signed about 2/3 of the way through the season (when we were top four or close this year).

Sticking with the incumbent coach has paid more dividends than going for the quick fix of late. I recon it’ll all come good this season for the playing group, selection committee and coach.

They got a lot right last year but that 5% off at critical times was the difference. Happy to give him the flick if we miss finals otherwise we just need to keep improving.

It's a case by case basis. There's no point sticking with a coach for the sake of it if they've shown they're not up to snuff. Like a Chris Connolly, or Mark Harvey. Or Justin Longmuir.

It would be peak Freo if we left him unsigned through a deep run into the finals, then somehow lost him to another team.

LOL. I think we're safe from that scenario unfolding

A very good friend of mine is a Saints fan and he was gutted. They finished 6th in 2020, then 6th again in 2023 with practically the same list (minus a 24 year old Max King, NW-M and Liam Henry in 2020). It's a top 8 capable list.

Finishing 12th was a disaster but having picks 7 and 8 in this draft is a huuuuge upside.

JL has close to the best list that we’ve ever had. There’s 3 players that he needs to get the best or better out of.
#1 is Amiss. Jye must get back to his 2023 accuracy. 36.28 is just not accurate enough for a player who mostly has set shots. I know he kicked some clutch goals (Syd. & ESS.) but he absolutely cost us momentum in a lot of games due to his misses.
#2 is Jackson. JL needs to find where Jackson can get 20 touches and 5 marks a game. Jackson having Treacy like improvement will be huge for where we finish on the table. He’s got to have greater influence on the outcome of games.
#3 is the Smokey and that’s NOD. He’s probably got the highest ceiling, or room for improvement than anyone else on the list. He’s fast, has a cannon left boot and can kick goals. To me he replaces Fyfe in the middle, but how JL uses him will be very interesting.
JL has everything else a list could want. AA players running around in both the midfield and defence, a maturing forward line that’s added one of the most dynamic players in the league.
I think that generally speaking, our on field tactics are pretty good. We’ve been right in a lot of games,we’ve just failed in moments and sometimes periods of games and that’s where the above players can make the difference.

The players seem to have bought in, we still have a young age profile and copped injuries in the wrong positions at the wrong time.

Getting Bolton & another year swings it to finals or bust territory now but you have to back in a driven group. Sacking the coach last season would have been like putting a heart and soul player on the trade table. It could easier backfire, while the path to greatness looks achievable with this group.

Who would you have replaced him with anyway? McWalter?

I agree with you on pretty much everything

Two things hurt JLO and that was a feww odd selections that imo cost usba few games plus the loss of Darcey Pearce Cox and Tracey with Jackson playing under duress

Thats our spine and some players were injured for long periods or at crucial times. If all those guys are up and firing plus Bolton is at his best then look out the rest of the comp.

100%. The club will most likely extend around the bye even if we are somewhat struggling. It's not what I would do but it's the AFL way.

I would add Sean Darcy to Amiss, Jackson and NOD as players JLo needs to get the best out of in 2025. Depending on how well Darcy is able to be fit and available then there is huge upside in his contribution to the FFC.
While JLo is not responsible for Darcy's injuries he needs to ensure he is fit to play before putting him out on the field. Don't play any players who are as underdone as big Sean was in 2024.

Who at Saint Kilda would be in our best 22?

From WC 2024 I'd say McGovern, Barrass, Kelly, Yeo, Reid, Allan, Waterman.

That's 7, I can't name 7 St Kilda players that would get a run at Freo. Their list is horrible. RTB is still the GOAT.

I would say our 2025 list is easily the best list we've ever had.

After the best 23 it drops away next year but in that 2013-2015 run there was Sutcliffe, Sheridan, Suban, Zach Clarke in and around our best side.

Pavlich was easily the best forward we've ever had but the front 6 in 2025 as a collective are much better than the 2013 forward line.

Not his fault we kicked 9 goals 14 and 5 OOTF or whatever it was.

One was a draw, the other a Matthew Scarlett toe poke away. Brilliant coach IMO and made our club relevant.
It’s his fault half the team rocked up not prepared. That’s the whole point of being the boss, you get judged on your players performance.

I agree he’s been our best coach so far but I don’t give him a pass for the GF. Making Lachie Neale the sub was stupid.

Agreed.
The equalisation of talent and the salary cap mean that the 8th best player on the worst team in the comp is better than the 22nd best player on the premiers.

That’s just a fact and the way the comp operates.

Anyway we were not even close to being the best team in the AFL in 2024 so it’s silly and ridiculous to say there wouldn’t be 7 saints players (or any other club for that matter) that would not get a game for us.

With new changes to game rules, will Freo be forced to play faster? Will those changes also take out the advantage collingwood already have (fast game ) as all teams will be playing fast footy?
