He could improve.... will he is yet to be seen.

Just to state the bleeding obvious in another silly season thread!

If he is fit, used more sparingly in the ruck and can put on some more muscle, I think he will show a bit more. He was thrown straight into the deep end in his first year by Malthouse, who all but destroyed Fraser as a player. Osteititis pubis and a chronic back injury held him back for several seasons, then his knee again last season. He is a smart player. If he can return to collecting 20 - 25 possessions a game, he will be valuable. He has shown he can play when it counts - in finals. He was our only good player in our second grand final loss to Brisbane. He's never going to be the no.1 draft pick we thought we were getting and he will probably continue to look a bit soft at times. If he is annointed captain, I don't think I'll be too upset. He may not be my first choice, but I kind of hope that the responsibility of being the public face of the team might move his game up a notch or two.

Would love to think so but reality is that he has been in the system now for 9 years. thats right 2009 will be his 10th season!!! He wont get any better than he already is!!!

you know i made this exact thread last year. and my answer was yes

however this year, there were signs of just how good a fit josh fraser can be. fraser at his best is still one of the most damaging ruckman in the afl, not necessarily in the ruck though... lol

so i say we have seen his best but just not often. looking forward to a firing fraser in 09

His impact on a game can definitely improve.

Then I am not quite sure if you know how good Josh has been when fully fit if you are thinking or meaning he will be the same next year as he was this year, maybe you should youtube and take a look at him at his best.

If he is able to reproduce his best form then he is going to be a great asset once again next season.

I do tend though to disagree that players cannot improve as there are so many things in our game and we are yet to see the perfect player, they may slow down and so forth but good players make up for it when aging by improving other parts of their game

In terms of years at the club maybe look at Leon Davis, I think by memory he came along the same year as Josh... so if one cannot improve in your eyes after so many seasons will this also apply to Neon?

For Fraser to have a good year we need Wood or Bryan to have a good year to help him out. If we can use him in the ruck for most of the year at 15 min burst then i think he can have a big impact. The other 2 need to take up the slack so we can rest Fraser during the game so when he is on the ground he runs his ar*e off and get plenty of the ball. He is never going to dominate the center square but around the ground he can be as good as anyone.

I forget which game it was this year but in one of Josh's better games I was really impressed with his field and ground work around the centre corridor (not ruck work) area and loved the way he looked first at the option of handball to a running player.

When he takes the ball and runs himself he is also one of the better big men in the game that can move fast and deliver the ball by foot and hit targets.

I don't think Fraser will ever be a dominant tap ruckman. He seems to constantly have an injury hamper, and he is too slight of body to really have a massive impact as he is easily outbodied by the bigger ruckmen. I actually felt like his best game came in the Dreamteam match, but unfortunately he got injured in that match and it probably set him back another few weeks.

However, it is his work around the grounds which makes him valuable. He is able to kick a bag of goals, find space and gather possessions and generally reads the play very well and makes good decisions. His versatility is probably his strongest point.

I would agree that he needs to have more support from the secondary ruckman, though. This has been a problem ever since Fraser has been playing, he's basically played a lone role for about 9 years. I'm hoping Wood starts developing in the way that we'd like, freeing up Fraser to play his more natural game and relieving some of the pressure.

GJ, a man of my own heart.

Watch for Fraser to have his best year in the last 5 this coming season.

josh played a very good game against north melbourne in round 5 i think i was impressed but dropped off a bit late in the season

If he can remain injury free, we will see his best.

There isnt a better time for Josh to stand up either, with the abundance of youth and inexperience at the club.

Not better, but more consistent. He's been so destroyed by injury that I think most of us have forgotten what his best was like.

1st North Game?

Lets see;

never wins the hitouts, weak as water, falls over way to often, jumps an hour early at ruck contests, outmarked by smaller opponents way to much, and always injured!

No chance he will improve, we have seen the best of Josh Fraser.

Those 4 quotes are spot on and sum it up for me. We are unlikely to see anything new or better but hopefully we see more good games more often.

Part of the reason he hasn't strung a lot of good games together of late is he always seems to get injured and he clearly seems to be one of those guys who struggle when not close to full fitness (or his injuries are much worse then we think and his a soilder just for being out there)

The other part of being more consistant is to stay more involved and have more of an impact.

I agree. It's a matter of staying injury free to me.

I mean, I don't think he will play better, just more consistently good if he has an injury free run.

Have we seen the best of him?
Can be looked at in both ways.
Has he hit his peak? I think he has, 03 was by far his best year
Has he hit the heights we thought when drafted?
No, not by a long shot, in fact one of the worse number 1 picks IMO

or can he improve?
He has to but won't.
What has he got going for him? a young ruckman that is still learning the game & a small ruckman who does some very dumb things and IMO should be played forward. He's got no reason to want to improve, they won't drop him, they want trade him and for some reason the coaching staff seem to rate the way he plays, even if it looks like he doesn't try.

I think he gets judged very harshly in this regard. The guy is clearly a collingwood man and has a passion for the club. His just a big doopey laconic smooth moving type of player. It's not that he is not trying his just that sorta player.
