But both Mitchell and Lewis contract expired after next season, how is this building a warchest ? You could have got rid of both at the end of next season and been in the same position

Allows us to start talking to free agents now as opposed to at the end of next season when they might've resigned or are looking elsewhere.

Can front end contracts for guys like McEvoy, O'Meara, Brand, all of whom are unsigned at the moment, for the 2017 season, making our 2018 cap space larger

Need to pay JOM and Titchell for 2017 too.

He also plays in the most demanding position in that group as well (along with Mitchell), being full-time midfield. Hodge and Burgoyne play utility roles, and Gibson is a defender.

Roughead, given the amount of playing time he has lost over the last year and a bit, could go on a couple of years longer than originally mooted. Or he may never play again.

That's the beauty about him coming to Melbourne. He won't need to get as battered. At Hawthorn the inside mids were in essence he and Mitchell. At Melbourne there's Viney, Tyson, Jones, Vince, Oliver and Brayshaw.

Lewis will be able to play a bit more on the outside of the contest and use his skill and decision making. If anything, it will freshen him up.

Totally agree with you, I think he'll play the HF flanker role he played a few years ago for us before Sewell retired, with runs through the middle. Is very good there, smart ball user getting the pill into the 50, and finds space well.

Midfield next year reads; Lewis, Jones, Vince, Viney, Petracca, Oliver, Bradshaw, Tyson and Gawn. Can't play them all obviously. Petracca may play half forward, Oliver and Brayshaw pushing for a spot. Great result.

Stretch on a wing, plus there's Melksham as a mid 20's player coming in and guys like Hunt running through from half-back.

It's not going to be easy making the 22.

Spot on. I mentioned earlier, I also wouldn't be surprised if he played a bit off half back too, for the same reasons

Trengove no longer in midfield calculations?

Agree with this. An elite kick and will be looking for Hogan lace out in the forward 50 for the next 3 years.

Roosy's probably wishing he stuck it out for a bit longer. :)

I'm one of the few holding out hope, but not a lot.

He hasn't had a proper preseason in at least 3 years, so the club is affording him that opportunity. He's a smart player with good disposal and a terrific mark, but unless he can regain some zip in his first few metres he'll be cooked.

We all hope he can make it back.

Thanks MFC fans for the replies. Jordan Lewis is a great get and he could be the difference that sees you guys through to the finals for the first time in 11 years. Elite midfielder for a fifth rounder, what a steal (yes, I am aware of the irony of that statement).

Sort of envious of your list. Is Jesse Hogan homesick yet?

Stretch doesn't get in in my team, but that's just my opinion. He may hold out an Oliver or Bradshaw, but we've now got serious depth that we just can't field everyone. Lumumba and Dawes are done, Lumumba not pushing out either McDonald or frost.

Maybe you have someone else in mind ths trade period ? Rockliff maybe ?

It's been floated around some Hawthorn supporters. Not sure if I'd like us picking him up seeing as he has a bit of a muddy reputation despite his on field ability.

I honestly think we'll only get JOM done and anything else is a bonus.

A senior figure in our coaching group said at a function that "Stretch will play 240 games with the club". Expect him to be a staple on the wing next year. We'll need his run and spread and another preseason will serve him well.

I also expect Oliver and Brayshaw to be best 22.

Stetch and Oliver would be in the first 15 picked and a fit Brayshaw not far behind. Melksham, Vince, a 3rd tall at either end will be the guys on the cusp.

Hard to see us not being a very good ball winning side. Just a matter of getting the ball movement and pressure right. Lewis at half back or on the wing might actually help more than on the ball.

Maybe a couple years ago he got bashed up a lot but that's rubbish. Have a look at Clarko's strategy this year and our contested stats. Many times Hawks deliberately focused on setting up structure to first counter against the ball coming out to try to turn it over and then take advantage of opening things up to go forward. Unfortunately did not work for us this season and I am sure Clarcko will change things up.

In terms of Lewis being there for outside run are you serious? If anything with so many of these types at Melbourne would not surprise me if he gets dropped at stages! He will be used more to guide your youngsters.

Oh dear.

Where did I say "outside run" ? I said "outside the contest", in other words more predator than first dibs.

He was your highest contested ball winner in 2016, but he won't be at Melbourne.

He may not have played as inside as Jack Viney did this year, but he was still required to win the bulk of your contested ball and he was also your highest clearance winner.

And yes, I know why we recruited him.
