You know KB said on his show the other week that because we had no money in our footy dept at the time, we picked him without Miller having seen him play live. The club were just told that he was a gun and that if we didn't pick him WC would so we got in first:eek:

Sounds about right considering the skeleton club we were at that stage.

What are you talking about too early?
He has had plenty of time to shows something, but he has shown nothing and has been rightly shown the door:rolleyes:

:thumbsu:Exactly ... what do we want to give him three more years to reiterate what we already know????

In this case, the stats don't lie ... 13 odd games, four years during a period when we have largely been poor ... a bad return on investment.

A player half worthy of a game would have got one with us in those last five weeks ... he couldn't!!!

THE END!

Just further damnation of our inability to manage player development. Another kid with a lot of promise, ability and fire in the belly falls through the cracks. Never at any stage did we commit to this kid for more than 2 or 3games in a row and even then it was on again off again on again off again. Despite whats been said here I saw him play some consistent quality footy at Coburg only to get promoted for yet another 5 mins on half back, then another 4 at half forward then the pine and dropped the following week. Regardless of whether this may come back and bite us or not, we must get better at developing our talent or risk God knows how many more repeats of the keyboard cowboys saying "he's crap....delist!" only to be replaced at the draft with the next lamb to the slaughter. How would this kid have gone with similar opportunity at senior level as Pettifer, Schulz or Hughes? We will never know.

I am disappointed that we delisted JON and agree to the "no sentiment in footy" wank BUT provided we as a club have clear recognition that JON got delisted because RFC failed JON not the other way round. Going forward that has to change for the Vickerys and Posts et al or we best get used to 14-16th position.

Very well said.

We must get better at identifying talent, before even contemplating developing it. Remember, we are talking about talent, not the percieved version that suggests that because we picked him at number 8 that must mean he has got talent. If you aint been on this planet in the last 5 years, and i will repeat this one more time and never gain, the only and i mean only draft picks that Miller and TW got right, were number 1 and number 2. The rest are pure stabs in the dark that threw up some mild successess...I mean how many top 10 picks have we had? From that how many do you suggest should have been making up the senior list atm and how many are now playing in lower leagues?

The most damning pointer to the ineptness of our talent spotting is this...how many delisted youngsters were picked up by another AFL club and are now playing? 1 dude and that was at number 1998 on speculation.

Apart from the ****ing obvious, Lids and Cotchin and JR somewhat, GM was a classic for the coat pullers and he hung us on what the whispers were. They had him worked out to a tee, the end. i.e. our footy dept was being run by one super dumb **** who thought they really wanted him to pick the best...so they gave him the mail and one of them was JON...;)

The RFC only failed by actually considering JON a top 10 pick. We didn't even see him play a game live FFS! He's kicking technique was flawed, he had no awareness and his decision making was poor. JON was an athlete not a footballer. He could run and had good hands. That's about it. Even watching him at training made you shake your head. He was hopeless. You can lay an argument that our poor development of players is to blame for other Tigers not coming on but not in JON's case.

Ridiculous argument.

TT is of the opinion that a "dollop of dog's do" AS A FOOTBALLER can still turn into something if handled in some way that seems appropriate by TT.

Utter BS. That's a sympathy argument for mediocrity talent. And blames us for not turning crap into diamonds.

Re-adjust your thinking. It's old and makes no sense.
The kid was crap in the Seniors and crap when I saw him with Coburg....SO WHO FAILED HIM??

Pfft...

"RFC failed JON not the other way round"
= BULLSHIT!

Jarrod Silvester is 24 years old, and he was on Richmond's rookie list this year. Mike Pyke is 25 years old, and he was on Sydney's rookie list this year too. Going by that, I'm not sure there is an age limit.
Clubs are allowed one "senior rookie" on their list for a maximum of 2 years I think. We were hoping to make Cousins one at the start of the year if I'm not mistaken. But Silvestor will either be delisted or upgraded this year, out of neccesity, which will free up a senior rookie spot. But, at only 21 - 22 next year, I'd say he would still be eligible for one more year.

Hey Guys,

Was he rated before the draft? Or was the pick completley out of the blue?

Was rated but probably expected to go in the latter half of the first round rather than as early as pick 8. If you search BF you find threads where Collingwood supporters want him ahead of Thomas for example.

:)A few standout posts there ...

Comparisons to Fiora:confused:
"Won't set the world on fire":thumbsu:
Small frame:thumbsu:
Will be better at Richmond than he will be at Coburg:confused:
Silky skills:confused:

Was a poor pick back then and poorer years later!!! As that first comment suggest (re Fiora), we didn't then and don't now need under-developed kids like that!!!

A number of people questioned why he went ahead of Mitch Clark and Hurn

Maybe Miller should have read our boards.

WHAT was bleedingly obvious in that first thread was that a lot of the knockers, those who doubted JON, were posters from WA - people who had seen him play.
It's unthinkable and unforgivable to think Miller selected the kid on a whim and hadn't even seen him play!!!!!!
This must never happen again .... it's clearly unprofessional and embarrassing!!
does that worry anyone else, that we didn't see the kid play???

I kinda hope the Eagles give him a shot either through rookie or PSD. Wont lose any sleep over not getting him but he obviously was pretty highly regarded junior and with such a late pick it wont hurt the Eagles.

Not really. The majority of them rated him but some thought he might struggle with a move to Victoria away from his family. And then we didn't assign him a development coach and left him to rot at Coburg. I think the blame is more on our coaches than our recruiters (though if it's true we hadn't even scouted him that is unforgivable). He's still young enough to make it and I hope one of the WA clubs picks him up.
