This kid is tough he has good skills tackles hard and evades tackles uses the ball quite well. he is like a mini selwood. He is playing good footy in the vfl

Gavin Brown has this to say about him after a game last week: Jarryd Blair (10k, 8h, 6m, 13t) Played predominantly in the middle. Won a lot of the ball in tight situations.

I think he should debut for someone like cook or wellingham. This kid has a future in the guts for out team like a scott burns :thumbsu:

I like Blair and agree that he's been playing well in the VFL, but playing as an inside mid at his size is a huge ask. I'd be interested to see how he goes against the bigger bodies in the seniors -- just think he'd have trouble sustaining that style of game. I'm hopeful but not confident about his prospects.

I'm prepared to say it; I was disappointed when we drafted Blair.

I absolutely wish him all the best, I hope he absolutely tears it up, but I thought at that selection I would have preferred for us to go for a project tall like Christian Bock or Michael Gugliotta than an undersized mid. I understand that his performances have been outstanding in the TAC Cup, but he still has to make it at AFL level, and we'd already picked up mids in Sidebottom/Beams/Rounds/Francis ahead of him in the draft.

His efforts in the VFL so far have been good, I hope he now continues to make every post a winner.

He's worth a shot on the rookie list. Sure, guys like him making it in the AFL are one in a thousand, but if a team is going to get that one in a thousand shot, why not us?

I honestly don't know why every footballer needs to be six foot tall. Sure he may not be able to outmark players in a pack however he can certainly get front and centre to that pack.

As an inside mid he would be the one at the bottom anyway, being short just means he doesn't have to bend down very far ;)

As long as he is tough at the man, hard at the ball and uses it well then I don't care how tall he is.

Very true mate, i'm prepared to back him in. It always frustrates me how teams don't take a punt on players, as a consequence of their height. I went to the same school as Jimmy Polkinghorne (Bris Lions), and i can recall one or two blokes who i thought were heads and shoulders above him....not in terms of cm though, and they were overlooked. Jim's playing well for Brissy, so it kinda makes you think what if....i say all the best to him, and bugger the status quo! If he's good enough, he'll make it, simple as that....and i think he might be.

I'm sick of getting project talls, we never seem to pick up the young gun mid that was overlooked because of something or other. They're the same as project talls in many regards.

Although to be fair our rookie list only realy has Reed, Keeffe and Thoolen as project talls at the moment.

I've seen him a few times in the VFL so far this season and he is always good but never outstanding.

He's an in and under type for sure. I'm not sure he has loads of class but his skills are nice.

He is freakin tiny though although the way he plays it doesn't seem to effect him much but he can really only play midfield. He will therefore I think serve a fairly long apprenticeship as he will need to be ready to step straight into an AFL midfield if he gets a game.

I can see the potential there for sure but there has to be doubts on him as there arn't many Brent Harvey's running around and Blair doesn't seem to have his pace and class.

I'd persist with him though and see how he goes over the next couple of years. He has a chance for sure.

Elevate him from the rookie list for the Freo game and he can run under Sandilands' crotch straight down the guts and kick a beauty.

Scarecrow tiggy forever!

I suppose you could even call him a project player

Hey, I just noticed our very own Ali's Army is 3rd on overall SC ladder! Well done my man.

EDIT: sorry, this was meant to be on the SC thread at the nest - don't know what happened there.

Absolutely!

And it should be noted that he has come out of under 18's as a small player and is more than holding his own against grown men in the VFL.

He may project very well indeed! :thumbsu:

If we'd been prepared to cut our losses on Thoolen, we probably could have taken Bock and still picked up Blair later in the rookie draft.

The point I'm making though is that the only tall we'd taken in the drafts until that point was Leigh Brown. Obviously we didn't rate them, but personally I think Bock was worth a punt.

A definite in and under type, not intimidated by the height of others as he has played with and against bigger bodies throughout his entire career...... this bloke didn't just wake up and say shiiiit..... what am I doing here.
As as far as player comparison goes I would liken him more to a Sam Mitchell than a Brent Harvey ..... something the pies have missed for a long time .... the next Extractor..... in and under, tough as nails....bring on the Extractor

The kid won the morrish medal, so he can play.
You arenot given that medal, you have to earn it and it is based on consistently performing every week.
Rodan won the medal and no one wanted him because he was small.
Richmond picked him up and he played some decent footy until he did his knee and a dopey coach decided he was not really needed.
Look at his form last year at Port Adelaide.
Going by the article below, he has a chance of making it.

Yeah, I only used the Harvey comparison as they are about the same height (very short!) but you are right, his style is far more the extractor role like Mitchell.

whatever happened to the other guy he tied with to win the medal? he's mentioned in the article "Farran Priest."
Any info or interesting facts?
thanks.

In this article it says he's super quick but earlier in this thread someone said he wasn't as fast as Harvey:confused: He's still way smaller than Sam Mitchell who is 179cm 84kg, that's bulldozer Medhurts proportions, Blair is listed as 70 kg, would get pushed off the ball in AFL at the moment IMO.

Would love him to make it though, need more tough mids....well toughness in general.

He was below draft age, and is playing in the TAC Cup again this year.

He is also a fellow midget, listed at just 171cm and 74kgs. He's having a decent season, though so far not living up to last year.

once again my blair killed it today in the vfl, id love to see him put on the senior list during the year. he is one of my favourites

The names Liberatore and Brent Harvey come to mind with Blair. They were both written off because they were "too small" and it really does look as if Blair will make it as an AFL player.

Those calling for him to be on the list maybe a bit premature, but I have no doubt come November this year, both Blair and Lachlan Keefe will be elevated to the senior list, and we will see both make their senior debuts in the pre season comp next year.:thumbsu:

Early in the year there was a thread asking which rookie listed player would be elevated after Rd.11. I went for Blair, based on watching him star in a pre-season training session. I haven't seen any VFL matches this year, but it seems he is going OK. Good to see such a high tackle count.
