And they also have Jye Caldwell out of contract and are going hard to retain him, therein lies your answer.....They have gun midfielders running out of every orifice.

Lever was best 22...Hately clearly is not.

If they are going to lose both of them...happy to up our offer and take both

Doubt we will use the PSD, as pick 29 should be reasonable for both parties. Prefer to be honourable.

Can't see GWS pushing for crazy compo like a 1st rounder that would force us to use the PSD.
There's a lot to be said for being fair traders. Trying to ream clubs just because you hold the PSD card is bad form, trade in good faith. It's the same with bidding on NGA/Academy players, bid where they are consensus rated is what all clubs expect and do.

Pick 29 is about right IMO.

Serious question, this is (unless I'm mistaken) the first time we've ever had the #1 pick in the PSD, so what is it's value if we're not using it on uncontracted players in place of a pick in the second round that we could use on someone who could play 150+ games for us?

I get the 'dog act' argument, don't need it re-explained, but if you literally get the first pick of all the players who aren't contracted to an AFL club, is there a better option out there we would rather hold onto it for? Are we keeping it in our back pocket for a rainy day?

Also PSD or no PSD, I don't think GWS are going to be happy with pick 29 for someone who went as early as he did 2 years ago. Tipping a lot more people on this board will be open to the PSD option in 3-4 weeks.

iirc yeah but wasn't Bonar a salary dump too? GWS had this stupid idea of paying rookies overs in the hopes of retaining them longer term.
Unless Bonar signed a contract extension before he was traded (don’t remember him doing so), trading him as a salary dump would make no sense. Was likely simply looking for much more opportunity and had low value due to injury history/lack of games played

I really like the look of his stoppage work in his pre-draft highlights. Seems to prioritize getting front position by working his bigger frame in front of his opponent. Allows him to set up other players for the burst out of stoppage (i'm looking at you Harry).

Our midfield is screaming for a player like this IMO.

Well some posters are saying a pick in the 30s, I think they'll want closer to what they paid. Interesting to see if we pull the psd card.

We wont need to. They know we have it up our sleeve. We just have to stick to our guns and offer what we are comfortable with.

TBH I don't think GWS are going to fight that hard on this one. They've overdrafted the position to an unsustainable degree and these are the list decisions that result in that strategy. And they've publicly made their resigning priorities known in Caldwell and Perryman.

Yeah he had 2 years left on decent money considering he wasn't getting games.

Theo D saying GWS want a late 1st/early 2nd for him which would put them gunning for pick 20 or the Crouch compo if that blows out. Given we have the PSD threat and that he's uncontacted they probably have to accept unders for him though
I think we’ll hand over 20 in the interest of ‘fairness’ and the board will melt.

GWS have very little leverage here. I don't think we drop him back to the 3rd round out of good faith, but I also don't think we have any intention of throwing an early 2nd into the deal, picks in that range will end up as valuable assets on draft night.

Just gotta hold strong at 29 and wait for them to crack. For what its worth I don't think they will fight it too hard. They would have to see the writing on the wall

Here's your answer. :)

I think I’ve said it before... But watching that..

If he was in this years draft and playing for centrals like he did in his 2018 Draft year and have those as his highlights reels then... We’d all be frothing over the lad in here.. and be calling for pick 8 to be used on him and probably hoping he’d still be on the board!.

If we can get him for the WB’s second (which will end up around pick 35 in the wash up) then we’ve snagged ourselves a great deal.

Lad will be best 22 for us next season.

Let's not fantasise about players being better than they are, the reality is that Hately still has a long way to go before he'll be first 22 in any side.

I've watchied him at GWS and he's struggled for two years to make any sort of real impact.

Yes he's only 19, but there's absolutely no guarantee at all that he's going to amount to being anything more than being a fringe player.

I agree. I think this actually happens early in the trade week, unless we decide to hold firm to something lower than 29.

I think 29 is totally unders for his value, but overs considering GWS's leverage. So when its all said and done we come out of top value-wise, but they get a 2nd out of it, which is a bonanza compared to the alternative.

Which to me evens out the trade. And this is a case of the 'evens' that i'm quite happy to strive for!

If we have pick 20 currently, we may get 21 for Atkins. If that was the case I wouldn't mind giving them pick 20 or 21 for Hately + their 2021 2nd. Outside of that, pick 29 seems about right.

And exactly how much midfield has he played in those 2 wasted years at GWS?

He's an inside clearance midfielder first and foremost.
