Similar to Chris Yarran
Didn't he start as a forward then they threw him off half back?
That’s a very lazy comparison.

How is it similar to Yarran? Because they changed positions? Half the players in the league have changed positions since they were a junior.

Surely there is a more appropriate comparison, ie. an actual midfielder who moved forward.

Very different players. Martin plays taller, Stengle has way more tricks.

Another lazy comparison.
Ah yes, how dare people contribute in polite discussion and spitball their ideas about an incoming player

Maybe if you're going to be so forthright on shutting them down, you'd come up with a comparison of your own?

Bingo. Which is also why Martin wasn't worth more.
*I still would have given Humphries 5. Let the guy have the security to buy a house.
Humphries and his manager would have been crazy to take a five-year deal. And I'd be shocked if they wanted or asked for one. That would lock him in to his current value when I'm sure you agree the sky is the limit with that kid. He now has two years to show his value so he can demand a serious pay-check.

Thats really silly. Any 20 year old would love a 5 year deal. You can negotiate on an ongoing basis.
I worked with a player.

He was offered another club. And took it.
"Why would you go there?"
'double my current contract. And security. It's assured income on a contract. I'm going straight to the bank and buying a house in Carlton. I can't do that otherwise'

Was that a 20yr old who was a couple of years into his career and maybe sitting on the fringes, who was happy to secure his future in such fashion, or

A newly drafted player who was yet to play a senior game, meaning a 5-yr deal would be an irresponsible offer from the club, and can't really see any club offering a newbie yet to debut a 5 yr offer nor a player manager willing to accept it, or

Was what about a player who's had a taste of senior football and showed some good early signs but the only party who benefits from an early 5-yr extension is the club as they can lock the player away likely under their value

For a player, why would accept a 5-yr extension too early in your career when you know that you're going to get better and will get more if you wait that extra 12 - 18 months before signing such an extension - which is what we saw from Jack Henry for example

It was a player who kicked 3 in the 3rd quarter of a GF and a club came at him.

If we get more than 25 games out of him or if plays a blinder in a high stakes game …its a win.

Hopefully like rohan did he stays on the park and has one or two good finals.

Humphries wouldn't have wanted more than 2. He will be working out if he wants to stay in Geelong (city not club) and manager knows he will be worth more in 2 years than he is now.

I don't think it's silly - let alone REALLY silly. Giving a young guy two years, as others have said, is pretty classic. And I can absolutely see how this situation suits both parties pretty well. At the end of the day, they both agreed on it, so it's possible they were happy enough with it too.

Billie Smedts? or Darcy Fogarty? LOL

Ok. I will bite.

A better comparison for Martin’s profile would be more like a poor man’s Cam Rayner.

Drafted as a mid, plays a bit on ball but more as a mid sized forward who can take a mark for his size.

But a poor man’s version of Cam Rayner.

Think Cam Rayner if he was injury prone and much closer to the end of his career than in his prime. Unfortunately for Martin he never really had a prime part of his career because of the injuries.

You will also notice that I didn’t take the lazy route of comparing an indigenous player with another indigenous player. Just sayin’

I was never into either of them.
Humphries for me made an impact in his senior games. And did not drop off in the finals. Probably accelerated actually.

I'd back that in.

Look, we know contracts can be broken. And during this trade period on this board I saw someone post. 'theres a lesson from this trade period. Dont let players you want to keep go out of contract' or words to that effect.

If he wants to move. We'll help him. But we've got to have hand. Thats just my thinking.
If I was his dad, I'd say to do a 5 year deal. You'll be mid 20's at the end. You'll have a house.
And if you've proven your worth then your next 5 years will be a great contract.

Most of you guys have never moved suburbs, never mind states.

This has been Jack Martin's issue, PERIOD..... just hasn't been able to stay on the track long enough to show the footy world how good a footballer he really is. Like to see the Cats treat him a little like Danger and just get him cherry ripe for the finals and don't be to concerned about how many games he plays during the year, as he could be a real player for us in finals given he's got real talent. And although he's not Danger class (no one is), he's next level if 100% fit (?????).... but rest assured he's definitely not a bottom six level class of player and 'big finals suits his game'.

You could type that exact paragraph about Nakia Cockatoo. Or Nathan Vardy. Or Paul lynch (for the older generation). Or countless other players whose bodies just weren’t designed for the rigours of AFL footy.

Disagree, Nakia was never going to be a top player, had no footy nous, Vardy was stiff but did play in a premiership but he was never going to be a top class player and Paul Lynch was a very good player but that is all. When young, Martin was in a handful of top players in the country and he still has that class!

Humphries loves Geelong and the people there, and he is as loyal as the day is long. Can’t see him leaving unless Geelong want to move him on

Martin was never in the top handful of players in the country. He was/is a very talented player that cannot get his body right.

He has total of 11 Brownlow votes in over 150 games. Now Brownlow votes are not exactly the most scientific way to measure the quality of a player, but surely a player who was in the “top handful of players in the game” would have more that 1 Brownlow vote per 15 games.

In his last 5 seasons he has averaged 7 kicks per game, just over 11 disposals per game, under 1 goal per game. 5 seasons is an extended sample size. Those results scream list clogger to me.

exactly- if he can give us what Gary Rohan did- I liken him to that pick- then we have a winner. Rohan got us into the 22 GF after all.

I mentioned 'young player' prior to AFL which he was at time and right from the get go he showed extreme talents and that reflected in his sizable lengthy contract at the Blues which in hindsight because he could not get on park ended up a negative move by them. Don't care much for stats or brownlow votes and never will, just glad we've taken the punt in recruiting him because if his body can hold up for finals. I see it as a very wise move and excellent back up and thinking their are some at club that may think likewise. But that's not to say what you are saying does not have merit, as it surely does but sometimes you back your gut instincts which is what I think the club has done and I for one are all for it.
