Toast Jack Darling - 250 AFL Games

Who spends their birthday with everyone from work? Most people would only have a couple people rock up on grand final day if they invited all their work colleagues. Doesnt mean they aren't well liked.

It's a total misconception that every player at a club is best mates
Surely 100% of people would realise that last sentence though?

I can only imagine how much some of the Eagles lads may genuinely hate each other.

I get the sense Jacks not really “one of the boys type” throughout his career he’s always pictured with the guys his age or a few year’s older or younger. That said compared to a lot of the boys he settled down at a youngish age and had kids in early compared to a lot of teammates his age.

In ‘18 when he was on fire it wasn’t just his contested marking but he was actively spoiling balls that he couldn’t mark if he was late to a pack. And I’ve always thought he’s played his best when doing that as well as chasing and tackling. The offense seemed to fall into place.

Even tonight all the chasing and tackling and he looked back to his best.

I think I've finally worked out what it is with Jack Darling.

He's an absolutely outstanding .... secondary tall forward.

If he's playing that role, both he and the primary tall (for most of his career, Kennedy), then he'll shine, and also make that primary tall a better player. But get it wrong, and play him as the primary, and nothing quite works.

I don't think it's a coincidence that he's starting to show some form again now that Waterman is playing a massive key forward role. Darling being the secondary makes Waterman better, and Waterman being the primary takes that tiny bit of pressure off Darling that is all he needs to shine.

Maybe if he hadn't spent all that time as Kennedy's shadow he may have become a dominant tall forward himself, but I suspect the combination of the two of them was better than either would have been alone.

Written in July 2022:

"What’s more they have both been beneficial to the other. In games where Darling has missed and Kennedy has played, Kennedy has kicked an average of 0.9 goals per game compared to 2.8 goals per game when he’s played.

Similarly Darling’s goals per game is 1.4 without Kennedy, and 1.9 with him."

JK benefitted from Darling more than the other way around judging from the discrepancies but I don't know how many games that is using as a sample size.

Not really, some of his best footy has come in tge past when he was the main man. Now he’s on the other side of 30 and slowing down and and it’s not as easy to play as an undersized key forward

JD draws level with Coxy on 290 games this weekend. No longer getting a top tier return on the scoreboard each week, but I think the effort and battling against two defenders on the dumped kick down the line is as strong as ever.

Phenomenal availability since debut.

Today makes it 290 games of a possible 311 since he joined the club

Missed 10 games in 2015 but played at least 20 games every other season with the exception of the Covid impacted 2020 when he played every game

Has overtaken Isaac Smith as the 2010 draftee with the most games

For an undersized KPF is durability is something else

Has kicked 13.3 from his last 8 games after struggling early in the season

Hoping he can kick a bag today but North has been his toughest opponent - 19.17 from 16 games. Time for the tables to turn

As far as key forwards go in the AFL he is:
  • #1 for tackles.
  • #3 for tackles inside 50.
  • #4 for one percenters.
  • #4 for ground ball gets.
  • #6 for f50 ground ball gets.
  • #7 for pressure acts.
  • #8 for spoils.
  • #10 for contested possessions.

It's all defensive stats though, he needs to improve offensively. He's nowhere to be seen for contested marks, marks on the lead, score involvements, goal assists or of course goals.

It's great that he is doing something well, but offensively there's nothing to be excited about.

I don't think judging forwards on the game just gone is quite fair given how shit we were in the midfield but Waterman won't be dropped and Allen shouldn't be dropped. I don't mind 3 talls as long as there's no resting ruck, which is another problem to sort out.

We have had three or four games this year where I find it hard to judge the key forwards at all given how shit the midfield was, at the moment though I don't agree with the team balance. Not sure if they will drop Darling or not. I'd be telling him to get angry and play like a key forward again, even if Waterman is the number one target you can still play like you believe you're the guy.

He shouldn't be the target for the long down the line kicks, it's like they kick to him just so he can spoil it or hold someone down for someone else to mark, but nobody ever does come over the top and mark.

What's the point of playing for territory and stoppage when we get smashed at stoppage anyway?

I think the biggest issue is the midfield, then it's the amount of players who play tall around the ball or forward of it (Darling, Waterman, Allen, Maric, Williams, Flynn).

And why is Darling 2nd on the team for F50 ground ball gets? Cripps is first with 29, then Darling on 19. Where are the other small forwards? (admittedly most haven't played full seasons so this might not be such an outlier as I first though).

So yeah, wouldn't be surprised to see him dropped, but I thought he had another year on the contract so probably makes his way to 300 either this year or next given there's always injury concerns etc.
