Is Buckley A Good Coach?

The senior coach is an important club figure and a legitimate topic of discussion. It's fair to do so and everyone has a right to express their view.

The mod team observed that the thread was dominated by a few protagonists and their points were repeated i.e. 8 years of regression vs marked improvement in 17,18 etc Pretty much everyone with a strong opinion has already expressed it here.

What further degraded discussion was the simplistic "sack FIGJAM" or "he's a legend" type posts.

This thread will remain open. If your view has slightly shifted or you have new thoughts please share. In an effort to encourage quality discussion repetitive statements and circular arguments will from now on be deleted as will silly posts suggesting that we sack a coach on match-day.

sorry mate - I corrected the language because the post was ambiguous.
I was talking about GW.

My bad didn't bother reading whole thread, imo I think Bucks could well go back into media for a break then do what many coaches have done come back with a renewed vigor and maybe philosophical change.
Malthouse after dogs, Matthews after pies etc.
Always thought mark Williams would of won a few flags had he took the reigns instead of Cameron, apparently GWs renigged on the deal for him to take over from Sheedy.

From the MMM website:
"Browne said that board member Paul Licuria is taking a lot of control of football operations and is trying and avoid an extraordinary general meeting.

He also revealed that Licuria doesn't see eye-to-eye with Football GM Graham Wright about Nathan Buckley's coaching future.

Wright is believed to want to extend Buckley, while Licuria thinks it's time to move him on.

Whichever way the impending board spill may fall could be the determining factor in Buckley's future.

Browne signed off by saying that if Collingwood slip to 2-11 in the next fortnight with Adelaide and Melbourne waiting, the decision might be taken out of their hands."

You'd think for a team at the start of a rebuild win loss would be a very small measure if at all in the decision.

Ball movement, fixing flaws like mids connection with Grundy/ruckd or retention of ball inside 50, or taking the game on instead of negative actions as a default setting.
Imo this is what should be the factors along with player confidence in the coach.

Playing a park the bus and keepings off might keep scores low but it also inbeds flaws and too defensive mindset in young players.

He has his strengths on list management and handling our salary cap ...that’s what I want him to do

So you think, spending his entire career at Haw working with the greatest Coach of a generation gives him no insight in what’s needed in a Coach.

If he’s not qualified with that background then who is?

I love the appointment because he has his strengths in the areas we were badly exposed—-how to control a salary cap and list.
He is one of the best footy bosses in the biz.

However, when you arrive at a club...it takes real steel and balls to have the responsibility of sacking a coach—-one of whom who has such a storied career at the club—and a responsibility that has been “palmed” off by our board the entire time he has been there.

Our board has been weak....they don’t need Graham Wright who has worked with Nathan since February—-so barely 3 months to know that we need change.

Coaching panels are assembled to chose Coaches whom they have never worked with.
It’s exactly because GW has seen Bucks operate first hand, that he is far more qualified than any member of such a panel to offer a far more informed assessment.

Its disappointing so many here have now turned against GW, because of the rumours he may recommend a reappointment.

He is more than qualified and capable of making a decision in the long term interest of the club.

I haven’t turned on GW.
I just don’t think he has the ruthlessness to do what must be done.

In normal circumstances I’d agree with you. However there’s been nothing normal about Nathan’s time as coach of Collingwood.
From his initial appointment to the “review” of 2017, where it was everyone’s fault but his own, to back again now where it looks like it’s “everyone else’s fault again”.

No other coach at any club would be afforded such a ride if the clubs were acting reasonably.

a second review in 4 years, say that out loud.

This list is not a 2/9 team, we have some serious talent in it so why do we sit 3rd last?

Then ask yourself, rich don’t have the best list, why have they won so many flags? Adel, Fremantle (missing their entire backline) their list are worst than ours, and yet where do they sit? Bombers in the 8 with kids?

but hey, it’s not the coaches at all

The EASY decision for GW is not to recommend a reappointment, because of the strength of the groundswell for change amongst supporters.
He will therefore need to be far more convinced, than with any other potential candidate, that Bucks is the right man, if he recommends reappointment.
Make no mistake, GW’s professional reputation is at stake here- and he’s not lying down for anyone, in the way you seem convinced.

Players make those calls every game. It's hardly likely the coaches change it within quarters or quarter to quarter. Some players really good at pulling the trigger, others not so much so. It's more a confidence and cohesion thing to me and that is definitely a coaching issue. It's their job to instill that in the player group, but it'll generally be one of the 1st things that suffer when you start playing so many <50 game players.

But don't let that stop anyone calling our current ball movement issues a coaching directive.
The kids excuse again. We played like this last year. Even the back half of 2019. The preliminary final is an example.

You'd have to feel a bit sorry for GW - came into a club with a few salary cap issues, and within a month or so, is being asked to judge the coach.

He might be getting the responsibility for this decision publicly, but deciding Bucks future wouldn't have been what he signed up to, and I've got little doubt he'll take the responsibility for who the board decides they want.

LOL, excuse, of course, that's all it is. Having 11 of 23 players <50 games, 5 <10, couldn't possibly have an impact.

Tom Browne running with Wright wanting to re-sign Nathan
Licuria wanting to go with change

I knew Wright wouldn’t have the balls to do what was required
According to?
dont take a backwards step Lica!!
Board trumps football dept in this instance.

Umm, this is all speculation. I find it highly unlikely that GW would recommend this early that he would want Bucks to extend, more likely he wouldn't

Click bait Journalism from Browne IMV, if it is indeed true then GW has not his due diligence and pulled the trigger too early. I seriously doubt this.

FMD now Slobo on 360 is backing bucks game plan. WTF is going on with the world when slobbo who hates bucks is backing him. At least G is against it but won’t stick his neck out about the coaching position.

They’re trolling us so hard.
The fan boys are lapping it up because it’s coming from “experts”.
It’s sad

On top of the second review in 4 years we're going through a third rebuild in 8 years and went through numerous heads of Football and assistant coaches.

All in the name of salvaging utter train wreck that Buckley's appointment turned out to be.

Media are all conspiring who support Bucks, it’s coming from the CFC haters and they just want us to keep on this road to nowhere, so their backing him to be extended 🤪

Please stop referring to facts here. It's quite upsetting.
